A foreign man has come under heavy criticism after being filmed driving dangerously in Phuket’s Patong area on October 18. The video, which went viral on Thai social media the following day, showed the man’s luxury car accelerating and weaving through traffic on a crowded road. Many netizens condemned the driver’s behaviour as reckless and a threat to public safety.

The footage, shared by a local motorist and later picked up by several news agencies, captured the foreign driver accompanied by a woman believed to be his girlfriend. They were travelling in a white Porsche 718 Boxster registered in Phuket. The video showed the driver revving the engine repeatedly, accelerating sharply and then braking as traffic congestion prevented further speeding. Witnesses reported that the man frequently cut in front of other vehicles and changed lanes without warning.

The incident, which occurred around 19:00 prompted widespread criticism online. Thai netizens described the man’s actions as dangerous and irresponsible, urging authorities to take swift action. Some users questioned whether the police would respond differently if a Thai driver in a normal car had been involved, voicing concerns about possible bias in law enforcement.

Others, however, argued that such incidents should not be widely circulated on social media, saying that doing so could harm Thailand’s tourism image. They urged witnesses to report dangerous driving directly to the authorities instead of sharing videos publicly.

According to Section 43(3) of Thailand’s Land Transport Act, the driver could face a fine ranging from 400 to 1,000 baht for reckless and dangerous driving if identified. Local police have not yet tracked down the man, but the video has intensified public debate about the need for stricter enforcement of road safety laws.

• A foreign driver in Phuket was filmed accelerating and changing lanes dangerously in Patong.

• Netizens criticised his actions and questioned police impartiality in handling the case.

It's the driver's way of saying, "look at me, look at me".

Showing off in a high range luxury car, making a nuisance with the noise, showing the entire world that you have such low esteem that you need to compensate with a costly car..and so on...all this on only reserved for the local hi-so's and not those foreigners hiring swanky cars...🙏

Only Thais are allowed to have such a behavior in their luxury cars like BMW, Mercedes Lexus etc....Drive around and you see how many same Thai drivers are even driving worse

🤣🤣🤣 He's driving around in a Porsche so I'm sure he will be terrified of the fine 🙈

Funny when some drunk in a knackered old pick up with no insurance smashes into him 😄

Great idea, hide the fact until folks get killed, and then hide that fact as well.

Well.. To be honest.. I did not see any fast or reckless driving. I see someone wanting to rev up the engine and show off a little bit. Seen 800 times worse every month.

Children should be prohibited from driving a vehicle!:clap2:

I had to drive from Kathu to Patong and back just now in order to pick up my new British passport (the first non-EU passport I have had).

As far as I can see from the video the farang apart from revving the engine in a childish way,  was driving the same way as many of the other Thai drivers I observe on a daily basis.

Today I saw many Thais were driving in a much more dangerous way, I see it every day.

One thing I have noticed is when going down either side of the mountain connecting Kathu and Patong 99% of Thai drivers do not seem to put their car into second gear or D2 if automatic thus using their brakes all the way downhill risking overheat and failure.

There have been many accidents and death due to brake failure on that mountain.

I have also seen live driving tests being performed at the test centre, it is a dedicated off road area, one car at a time around a two minute circuit, a ten year old kid from the West could pass the test.

My partner had driving lesson and passed the test, she would not be allowed to drive in the UK, no safe road skills at all, but handy on the odd occasions I am over the driving driving limit, being a Thai woman she does not drink.

But driving on the roads here does make for an interesting journey, it is like driving a dogem car at a funfair.

I see there is a lot of jealousy of the guy car's on this blog.

Someone said his car was a poor man's Porsche, Toyotas etc are a poor man's poor man's Porsche, I drive one. (A Toyota not a Porsche.) 😄

That would be very hard to police 71 million people in Thailand.

How do other countries do it?

I see kids every day on motorbikes, it is not that hard to see.

Fine a few of them, take away the bike and the word would soon get around.

How come school teachers do not 'police' fours kids on a bike four example leaving their schools?

Yes would you believe it or not. When I was staying in Surat Thani I happened upon a driving school with road layout to drive around for an hour or two before being let lose on the road. My son had just started lessons in the UK so I got him on a 2 day course. At least he got the chance to drive a 4x4 pick up truck instead of playing computer games all day.

As soon as I read the heading I thought this will bring out all the “Thai whataboutismers “

And it did.
