That was a lot more "upmarket" than the one we had in our small kitchen, and I doubt it would have mattered if it had been more a "upmarket" one, because my dear old mum used to burn everything that was put under the toaster, with it occasionally catching fire, and when I was a boy I always thought the way to make toast was to put it under the toaster until it turned black and caught fire and then scrape off the black bits, and voila, there was the toast!

I became quite adept at scraping and frosting in my engineering job, always thought it was passed down from my mother, she seemed to scrape toast daily !!

I still have my old OXO tin from the days I was a young lad.

It is with me here in Cambodia and contains my collection of old and commemorative UK coins, including an 1834 Queen Victoria shilling I got in bus fare change around 64 years ago! It was the photo above of a shilling that reminded me.

My old man used to smoke them Senior Service or Players, no wonder he died young, them other one Capstan full strength, they should have been charged with murder, they must have been lethal.

When i was around 13 i started smoking, just the odd one now and again when i could “ borrow “ one from my brother’s jacket pocket !!

Then i discovered a carton of these at the back of one of the kitchen cupboards, presumably left over from when my dad smoked briefly in University.

So figuring they were unlikely to be missed, plus having low moral standards !, I helped myself until they were all gone !!

They were never mentioned so assumed i had got away with the dirty deed  …… but maybe not !!

I remember those we’ll, loved em !!.

You can probably get them from some specialty online sweet sellers but i doubt if they will be the same recipe.

Most likely will look different also.

Victory V is a British brand of liquorice-flavoured lozenges.[1] Originally manufactured in Nelson, Lancashire, they were devised by Thomas Fryer and Edward Smith MD in 1864[1] and were initially made by hand to ensure that each sweet contained the correct amount of therapeutic ingredients: ether, liquoriceand chlorodyne (a patent medicine containing laudanum, cannabis and chloroform).

A quick google tells me that they are still using the same appearance as “ forged for strength “ is their catchphrase, and as Roo stated are still being manufactured and readily available but without that tongue numbing feeling won’t be the same !

Applying for a Thai tourist visa at the Hull Consulate about 20yrs ago, I think a double entry was around 16 quid, then Thaksin tripled the price.
