The Motion Picture Association – Asia Pacific (MPA), along with the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), recently honored Thailand’s rise as a key global film production hub at the "Thailand’s Success Stories" event. This celebration marks the fruitful collaboration between Thailand's government and private sector in elevating the nation's entertainment industry on the world stage. From 2022 to 2024, MPA member studios invested over $395 million USD in Thailand, encompassing 17 major projects.

These investments include international and local productions such as Universal's "Jurassic World: Rebirth," FX/Hulu’s "Alien: Earth," and Netflix's "Mad Unicorn." These projects not only utilized Thai crews and locations but also underscored the country's potential as a global production center. Urmila Venugopalan, president of MPA Asia Pacific, emphasized that sustainable growth involves nurturing local talent, providing incentives, and fostering a creative ecosystem.

The event also unveiled the "Thai Thai" philosophy, a strategic initiative to blend Thai culture with global production standards. This approach aims to create distinct content while establishing incentives to attract more international crews. Deputy Permanent Secretary Chotika Akkrakitsophakul highlighted the government's proactive reforms to support this vision, describing the Ministry of Culture's role as an "Executive Producer" in the creative movement and reaffirming Thailand's commitment to the creative economy.

A panel discussion titled "Success Built in Thailand," moderated by Patrick Frater of Variety Asia, featured leading figures from the Thai production scene. It highlighted Thailand’s rich creative resources, such as skilled crews and unique locations, which position the country as a vital destination for international film projects. The discussion underscored the supportive government policies tailored for international collaborations.

Another key highlight was the successful "Operation DEV Shutdown," which targeted INWIPTV, Thailand's largest illegal IPTV service provider. This action against piracy was a collaborative effort involving the DSI, ACE, and local partners. Larissa Knapp of the MPA praised this effort as a model of effective collaboration that protects creators' rights and bolsters investor confidence globally.

Key Takeaways

  • MPA and ACE celebrate Thailand as a rising global film hub.
  • Significant investment and strategic initiatives highlight growth.
  • Success against piracy strengthens intellectual property protections.

A good friend told me to look at "Tuk Tuk Patrol", which he said "highlighted Thailand’s rich creative resources, such as skilled screws and unique locations".

International film crews come here because it's cheap and you don't need to follow established safety guidelines (watch how many crew walk around on set in flip flops instead of steel toed boots; how electrical rigging resembles a bomb ready to explode, how people don't bother to sandbag light stands, no nurses on set, could go on and on). And still the only two major players in production services are A Grand Elephant and Living Films. Lots of boutique shops are out there, but they mainly fuel a race to the bottom in terms of pay for crews. And don't know if it's still the case but for a long time it seemed every farang with a camera was setting up his own film "company."

Fantastic idea – especially the hub for the cheeky film category! The actors would be cheap and already around, so production costs would drop massively – almost a bargain of a project!

Was expecting to read about Thais making TikToks. No mention of OnlyFans either

Not another HUB?  More hubs than an Aussie road train!
