Phuket Tunnel Project Overhaul: Size Cut, Tolls Axed

Thailand's transport ministry has decisively changed the scope of the Phuket tunnel project. Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Phipat Ratchakitprakarn, announced a reduction in the tunnel's width from 17 to 10 meters and removed tolls, transferring control from the Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) to the Department of Highways. This modification aims to speed up progress and cut costs.

The overhaul received criticism, particularly from Phuket MP Chalermpong Saengdee, who expressed concerns about public safety and accused the government of political maneuvering. In an online post, Chalermpong described the project as a critical safety requirement for the region, referencing the hazardous Kathu-Patong road known for its steep slopes and accident history. This road experienced a major collapse last October, highlighting the urgent need for safer alternatives.

Previously, the tunnel project was approved with an 11-billion-baht budget, expected to include tolls of 15 baht for motorcycles and 40 baht for cars. The comprehensive plan involved an elevated section and a 1.85-kilometer tunnel through Khao Nakkerd hill. The removal of EXAT from the project could mean discarding years of planning, which Chalermpong fears might lead to the loss of essential motorcycle lanes.

The Department of Highways now oversees the project, which has completed a 5.75 billion baht land expropriation phase. With Patong Municipality already clearing the area, the new control aims to streamline the development process. However, there are concerns that these changes might be an opportunity for hidden interests or financial gains.

Looking forward, stakeholders are watching closely as the Department of Highways takes charge of advancing the project that holds substantial safety implications for Phuket residents. These structural changes have prompted questions about engineering priorities and the potential impacts on the local community.

Key Takeaways

  • The Phuket tunnel project has been downsized and removed from EXAT oversight.
  • MP Chalermpong warns these changes could jeopardize safety and planning.
  • The Department of Highways now leads the project aimed at immediate progress.
