Dormant accounts, deadlines and final state

Featured Replies

Just too lazy to search forum and banking sites.

Friend has a Kasikorn account with a significant balance.

He is out of Thailand and has no connection/activity with the account since a few years.

Who knows what the deadlines are and what happens after deadlines expired (if any).

After about a year of no activity, the account usually gets marked as dormant. Once that happens, the bank may start charging a monthly fee until you reactivate it by appearing in person at the branch. If it stays untouched for several years, the balance could eventually be transferred to the Bank of Thailand as unclaimed funds, but likely you can still claim it back later with proper documents.

I read about this 10 year deadline and possible transfer to the treasury. Not sure whether it has been introduced.

Even then it would be possible to reclaim the funds.

Leaving a bank account with a significant balance unmonitored for any prolonged period of time is just a bad idea, no matter where.

Not just because of the risk of being considered a dormant account eventually, but also because you would be considered negligent as far as reporting any unauthorized transactions to the bank in a timely manner is concerned.

One thing to keep in mind is the monthly fee can be as much as 300 Baht at some banks for a dormant account. If you had an account with say only 20,000 Baht in it, and you forgot about it for about 5 years, you could come back to a near zero balance.

Bank policies are to only charge dormancy fees for accounts with balances less than a certain amount (I think 2000 baht)

But anyway, if he has the account number just try transferring a small amount to the account and see if it works.

If it does, then the account is fine and now no longer dormant. the end.

Done and fine 👍

Friend was excited about some unfounded fear mongering saying two years and off to treasury.

For anyone who wants "unfounded fearmongering' about anything related to Thailand, aseannow is the best place to find it.

No specific mention of any 10-year deadline in Kasikorn's currently-published terms & conditions for savings accounts:

19. Terms and conditions for savings accounts:

19.1 The first deposit shall not be less than the amount determined by the Bank, and the balance of the account at all times shall be maintained at a minimum of Baht 2,000 (Baht Two Thousand Only) or at the amount announced and determined by the Bank, which shall be posted at the Bank’s branch; it shall be deemed that the Depositor has been informed. Such minimum balance shall be subject to change as the Bank deems appropriate, and with prior notice.

19.2 If the savings account has a minimum balance less than the minimum balance required and determined by the Bank, or any deposit or withdrawal thereunder has not been incurred for more than one year, the Depositor agrees to pay a maintenance fee at the rate determined by the Bank, by which the Bank is hereby authorized by the Depositor to immediately deduct such fee from the Depositor’s savings account. If there is no sufficient balance in the Depositor’s savings account, the Depositor hereby gives consent to the Bank to close such savings account with prior notice given to the Depositor.

I had an account about to go dormant at Kasikorn, but i received a letter telling me they would start charging a maintenance fee in one months time. No problem, went to bank and paid in 100 baht, all ok again.
