Thai SIM Card For MOTO G7 Power

Featured Replies

Arriving Thailand December 2.  I have a 2021 MOTO G7 Power Android phone, supposedly unlocked.  When I get to Thailand, do I just purchase some Thai SIM card, pick a service i/e/ DTAC, AIS or whatever is there, swap out my ATT USA SIM and put in the Thai Sim card and the phone will work just fine?  Will most of the USA contacts I have presumably will be available on the phone?  ATT foreign travel plan options are not great . The only one they have is something like a plan that charges you $12 a day for a 24 hour period.

As long as the contacts you want are stored in the phone memory, not on your actual USA SIM card.

OK.  thanks.  Now, the important question.  I have never switched out sim cards.  Once I switch in the new Thai Sim card, pick the Thai data plan and carrier, will my phone now work just fine now and  independent of the ATT SIM card and data plan I have now?  I.e. ATT will not know or care I am using a foreign sim, there will not be any roaming charges or anything to do with ATT?  Then if I put the ATT SIM back in, the phone will be back on the ATT "plan"?

If it's unlocked then yes.  Is it a dual SIM phone?  If so just need to add the Thai SIM and select it for calls and data in the phone settings.  The ATT SIM will still roam in Thailand but that won't cost anything unless you answer any incoming calls received on it, incoming SMS messages will still arrive and will (should) be free.

Assuming it is unlocked - just ask AT&T if it is - then it may work here.

That model has limited frequency support here but I think it may work on a few supported frequencies.

That is an older model so you may run into some application-support issues, needing a higher level of Android support.

Maybe have a Plan B to purchase a new budget phone once here.

Contacts are usually managed by Android/Google rather than a SIM/provider/Dialer app, and independent of the SIM/provider. You may have to jigger dialing prefixes (+1, 001).

Are you relocating to Thailand permanently? If so, there are other steps you could be taking.

Yeah, I may go the whole Thai phone route.  In years past I did that a few times when things were simple, aka voice and text only, 2G then 3G.  No internet , No smart phone,

It is unlocked, I bought it new.  I did not buy it from ATT.  It is NOT a dual SIM phone.  So I assume once I remove the ATT SIM and install the Thai SIM, nothing at all will happen with ATT?.

Correct.  As mentioned earlier, make sure your contacts are on the phone not the SIM.

First of all, you need to check which phone you actually have. MOTO G7 Power is from 2019. MOTO G Power is from 2021.

Best to go with AIS, as your phone does not support LTE Band 40, but LTE band 41.

Maybe 50GB isn't enough for you, I don't know.

If not, then just get a basic SIM and add an appropriate package.

At the airport and service centres, they will try to push you into buying things that you don't want. So you need to have a very clear idea of what you need before you hit the ground.

If it turns out to be a 2019 G7 Power, then you can consider DTAC Kongkrapan SIM. 90 days of service. 100 GB per month at up to 15 Mbps  plus 60 minutes of calls to any domestic network, for 650 baht in total.

https://www.dtac.co.th/en/prepaid/products/ready-sim.html

Yes, that is around US$20 for three months. You are being ripped off in the USA.

If the G Power, perhaps stick with AIS.

You can apply the AIS All Together 300 package that gives you a total of 100 GB per month, plus unlimited calls to any networks for around US$9 per month.

20 GB of 5G internet at 1 Gbps, then 60 GB of up to 15 Mbps. If you exceed 60 GB per month, your internet usage will continue at 1 Mbps. - Free calls to all networks, up to 15 minutes per call. Exceeding minutes are charged at 1.06 baht per minute (VAT included) or 0.99 baht per minute (VAT excluded). So hang up before the fifteen minutes are up and then call again.- Unlimited AIS SUPER WiFi HotSpot usage.

- 300 baht deducted every 30 days for 6 months.

Plus a free 20GB of data for spending 300 baht per month.

- To subscribe, top up at least 300 baht and then dial *777*9272# and then press the Call key (only for newly activated prepaid numbers, valid for no more than 7 days).

Then you can apply *777*7693# for the first month of 20GB complimentary data(after applying for the main package) and *777*23002# for each subsequent month(after each renewal).

So 100GB of data which then slows down to 1Mbps(still usable) if you exceed 100GB for that month.

Best to top up in increments of 100 baht, as each top up extends the validity of the SIM by a month. That way your SIM may still be working for your next trip.

Armed with this information, they won't be able to push you into buying an expensive Tourist SIM or some other unwanted package.

Print it out if you can, so if you do go to a service centre, they can apply the package, rather than some expensive package that suits their bottom line.

What exactly would be the point of that?

the point is not having to get a sim card in thailand, and not have to register my phone, give passport etc.  My ATT plan has a horrible overseas thing.  So of course I would normally get a Thai sim card and plan once there as i have in the past.  But it occurred to me to ask why I could get a international sim card and plan here in the USA before going to Thailand?  Or do the Thai networks require some registration or whatever

The only change is that when you buy a SIM card they register it against your name and passport.  That's all.  So really no greater effort for you than years ago when this didn't occur.

As you intend to try to open a bank account during your trip I would highly recommend you have a Thai number registered in your name when doing so.  Without it you certainly won't be able to use the bank app if you even can get an account at all.

I was hoping, by the tone of my question, that you would immediately desist and change the subject.

Now I have begun to be concerned about your being alone in Thailand. 😊 I actually felt tears welling up.

Let's keep it simple. Take the most expensive plan, Unlimited+ at US$59 + taxes per month. Data Roaming in Thailand would cost US$20(plus any taxes they might conjure up) per GB. They kindly include a one-time credit of US$15, which would give you 750MB of data. After that, time to pay.

Yet that US$20 alone, without the need to pay US$60 per month, would get you 50GB per month for three months with an AIS plan.. As your fellow Americans would gaslight you, a US$3000 value. A US$ 6000 value with TRUE/DTAC.

You guys don't realise how much you are being gaslit and ripped off. When I see the advertising on your TV channels, my eyes are like saucers.

Please, just get a local SIM and forget about the idea, unless you need to keep a US SIM card for banking purpose. Then just get the cheapest to maintain. The other thing is that they will have restrictive practices for International Roaming, in that the SIM is supposedly to be used primarily in the USA.

All in all...forgedaboudit. 😊 Enjoy your retirement. I hope you can taste real freedom.

Yes I understand and that is what I am intending to do this trip as I lay the groundwork for retirement.  But in case I do not, is why I ask if I can get an international SIM card and pre paid plan here in the USA before I travel

Walmart seems to sell that Ultra International SIM thing.  I presume it is valid all over in the countries it lists.

As far as me being alone in Thailand, I have not idea what you are talking about.  I have been there 15 times as well as in many other countries.  I am fully funded for retirement and do not need to work, although since I do enjoy engineering work I plan to do some work part time of every year for the foreseeable future.  It keeps the mind active,  Trade that work time off with more holiday time of course, maybe even all holiday time

Should work fine with True/DTAC and AIS on 4G/LTE.

An UltraMobile International SIM will be quite expensive, calling minutes and Mb.

But give it a try, see how it works for you.

UltraMobile (part of T-Mobile) roams here fine, I have a UM PAYG SIM, which roams here, on WiFi Calling.

A local Thai SIM would offer lower cost voice and data.

How long will you be in Thailand?

How much data will you use?

Where are you calling out to?

I'd get a Google Voice number - that handset supports WiFi Calling - so free calling/texts to/from U.S.
