Most guys live in these places to get away from the craziness of the beach resorts, plus all the criminals, tourist muppets, and general nobs for a quieter time or more authentic Thai city experience that isn't as expensive... horses for courses on this one, I guess.

Many also go to live closer to where their wife is from, so you often find a smattering of foreigners in these bigger cities... but these cities are fine as most of these cities have everything you need or want other than the neon glitzy girlie bars, and they are more soapy massage style.

However, you do come across signs like this one...

Ur right.I lived in surin because my exwife and our 2 kids stayed there.Anyway we moved to my country 18 years ago.Never regret that,After we divorced about 8 years ago i only go visit my kids grandparents for a day.

I will not live in rural areas again.I prefer Bangkok and hua -hin.I also prefer to be single.

Normally because the woman they married wants to live in their home village.

I told mine no, I'm living in CM, accept that or move on.

Wife has no desire to live in an Amphur, where most family is, let alone little home town, Na Klang, NBLP.  Ain't a damn thing out there.

I only need 3 restaurants, 1 Indian, 1 Mexican, 1 German.

I could probably manage without the German ........

And a KFC is nice to have around.

All I need is a Makro & internet.  Having a decent Pizza Co is a plus, as it does a better Pepperoni pizza than I do, and probably cheaper (2 for1 ).

Have a few restaurants here, even less have AC.   No real western food offerings.  2 farang run western food venues, and where all the farangs seem to eat.  That's just sad ... :cheesy:

To escape all the hate coming nonstop from Harris-Spam.

From the theme song to the TV series Cheers! (not that I ever watched it):

Sometimes you wanna go
Where everybody knows your name

I like to go where NOBODY knows my name.

I've just told you i socialise with expats not tourists, do you know the difference? how often do you socialise with groups of expats and don't lie?

What I personally do regarding folk I meet is none of your business, what I don't like is people like you running down folk who do not live in your part of the country.

You, have no idea how folk live in their own choice of environment, you think because you are surrounded by farangy's and tourists it must be better, which to me is an extremely daft in the extreme.

There's a few on here like you, blinkered.............🐎................🙄

First, why do you think people want to escape, and that we would hate people and cities, just because we don´t think like you and appreciate the same things as you do?

After that, what is the problem if some chose to live in small villages or towns? Maybe you like to have a bustling life with something to do and people around you all the time. If other have a different opinion does not mean that they hate big cities or people. I think most of us have access to a motorbike or a car. That means we can get our peace, quiet and silence, or live with family and friends when we wish. Some days, we can also take a drive to a bigger city and also enjoy that life. Might be just a day trip or a week holiday.

I guess you must live a fairly isolated life with no girlfriend or wife, probably no children and now seeking attention from everybody. Most likely running in the bar scene, catching a friend for the night. Instead, we chose to have both sides of life, live it to the full extent and enjoy everything from a quiet country life in a village or a small city, with only 60-100 km to go, when we want to go out and have fun. On the other hand, most small cities have lots of Thai style bars and restaurant and a few foreigners that set up something in between.

But, you probably just started another topic, to feel good about yourself, showing your ignorance, and the envy you have of people who actually made a stable life in Thailand.

If you can get all you need in the smaller countryside cities for less $$ then why not.

How does Udon Thani compare with Ubon Ratchathani, two of the more far flung big cities in the sticks?

Is there any decent bicycle riding in Isaan?  Tennis courts?

Gyms suck. I need to be outside working off the calories.

What’s with all the inane questions? You must be bored out of your skull.
And why do you even care? Is it any skin off your nose why people want to live somewhere that you wouldn’t want to live? Just because you don’t understand why someone would want to live out in the sticks doesn’t mean it’s not worthwhile. The ‘real world’ as you call it has different meanings to different people.

Lead your own life, instead of judging others left and right.
