German Tourist Scammed in 140,000 Baht Pattaya Herbal Oil Deal

A 52-year-old German tourist has filed a police complaint after allegedly being deceived into paying 140,000 baht for five bottles of so-called “miracle” herbal hair oil in Pattaya. The incident occurred late on November 12, 2025, when the tourist, identified as Mr. Nadir Altaf, was approached by a foreign vendor promoting a hair-restoring product. The suspect, described as a man appearing to be from the Middle East, reportedly persuaded him to follow him to a nearby shop.

Mr. Altaf told police that he was quoted a price of “4,000,” which he believed referred to Thai baht. However, after completing the transaction with his credit card, he realised he had been charged 4,000 euros, equivalent to approximately 140,000 baht. “I felt cheated the moment I saw the amount,” he told investigators, adding, “This is unfair, and I want justice.”

Duty officer Lieutenant Phu Pha Hongyakun at Pattaya City Police Station confirmed that a report was filed at 22:05. The officer said an investigation team had been assigned to locate the shop and identify the vendor involved. Authorities stated that the matter would be handled impartially and that efforts were underway to recover the funds or press charges if wrongdoing was found.

Scams targeting tourists in Pattaya have been a recurring problem, police sources acknowledged. Incidents involving overpriced or misrepresented herbal products occur almost daily, though many victims choose not to report them. Others who do file complaints sometimes recover their money after police intervention.

Police have conducted several raids in response to such schemes, leading to arrests and shop closures in some cases. However, the persistence of these fraudulent sales tactics highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in protecting tourists. Investigators are now reviewing CCTV footage and coordinating with financial institutions to trace the payment.

Key Takeaways

• A German tourist in Pattaya was charged 4,000 euros instead of 4,000 baht for herbal hair oil.

• Police are investigating the shop and vendor involved in the alleged scam.

• Similar fraudulent sales have been reported frequently in Pattaya in recent years.

Come on mate. You can not blame the foreigner in this case. Unless he had to sign for the credit card  slip. If the shop says 4000 baht and then charges on your card 4000 EU. Without your explicit knowledge such a transaction occurred then that is a robbery. Not just being scammed.

I hope the man can get his bank to recall the transaction and not pay it for his sake. With a police report he may be able to have that done.

But the police hsould have acted swiftly in arresting those foreigners in the shop once the police report was made. Yet the OP says nothing about police action taken against the shop or workers. A shame and a sham. Since this herbal overpricing scam has been happening for more than a year with many cases of it in the news, I wonder if the shop has close ties with the local PD to stop their interference and prevent them from taking action.

He doesn't look like he needs hair restorer, but as they say  "Up to him"

Just imagine how much money would be lost if people decided they were comfortable with the way they look.

Millions spent every day on skin whiteners, skin darkeners, hair conditioners, anti-persperants, deodorants, everything and anything to keep people from looking and smelling like humans.

Then there is this poor fool. He spent 140,000 baht to pretend to grow hair. Granted, he was scammed. But he was willing to pay to GROW hair.
I spent 47 Baht on Temu buying an electric shaver to cut mine off.

Problem solved.

Interesting as I thought credit card charges were always made in the home currency apart from a few banana republics. Could it have been made in Kuwaiti or Bahraini Dinars or some other higher value currency.

Yep, it creates a whole new dimension!

Well, that would go against millions of years of evolution. For millions of years, evolution rewarded individuals who cared about how they looked and even tried to improve on that and beyond. This resulted in a greater spread of their genes, better positions in society, and more resources.

By saying, “Just imagine how much money would be lost if people decided they were comfortable with the way they look,” you’d be going against millions and millions of years of evolution, nature itself and how society works.

You swim with sharks you gonna get bite.

None of that herbal shxte works worth a damn.

Just shave your head if you going bald. The ladies love it.

I take Finisteride to shrink my prostate. The only other use it has is to promote hair growth.

Based upon where we are today, that sounds like a good idea.

The guy deserved to lose his money....

Who in their right mind would use a credit card in some fly by night shop like this....

The seller taught the idiot a good 140,000 lesson....

Contact the credit card company and block the transaction.

No reason your credit card company will not block it.

AND also file a police report to alert them to scammers.

At I guess I would say the free sample they gave to him to try on his scalp went to his brain and he lost all form of judgement and that is when he purchased the 140 thousand baht of hair tonic

And this is not a herbal oil.

This is Tropicana 100% Coconut Oil. The label is in English. It doesn't claim it promotes hair growth.

The price in Big C supermarket of this oil is around 80.00 Baht.

The question is not why this guy was ripped off, the question is not why there are so many scammers in this world, the question is why somebody would be so incredibly stupid to fall for something like this. I don't care how desperate you are to regain your hair, to pay nearly 30,000 baht a bottle for hair treatment is just beyond ludicrous, one has to wonder if someone has the disposable income to do something like that, how have they survived this long, how have they been able to thrive in this world without even a modest set of survival skills, and a reasonable level of discrimination and judgment?

One really has to wonder if we're hearing the truth behind the situation or something goes much deeper.

Nadir Altaf....good German name. I wonder why he was approached by a "man appearing to be from the Middle East".....

The story does reach the nadir of scam stupidity.

That nasty act has uaboubtly ruined the name of Pattaya as an honest and fair place to shop, did it now?

I think this story would read a lot different had the guy's card been charged 4000 Euros for staying in a 4000 baht hotel room.

That could happen to any one of us.

Ouch!! Call the bank ASAP and recover the monies

Obviously there appears to be a market in Pattaya for a certain type of foreigner who fear hair loss will effect their masculinity  and are only too willing to buy a product from a complete stranger they met in the street. If they’re really are that stupid they have no excuse for being screwed over.

Don't forget eyelash extenders, hair relaxing stuff, etc.  quite popular among certain groups of people.  then of course the finger nail talons.  I don't get it except I think the several inch long finger nails are meant to show the person doesn't need to work or do manual labor?  Now nothing against a decent manicure or pedicure, but the painting I never understood.
