Apparently Trump's deal with Japan also had to do with forming an alliance against potential China aggression in the Senaku Islands and the South China Sea. 

 

 

 

US will have Japan's back if China makes a move on the Senkaku Islands. 

People here in Japan largely support the new PM and are happy that she has a good relationship with the American president.  Japan is in a very dangerous neighbourhood, surrounded by Russia, CHina, North Korea.  Any alliances and friendship with the free world are welcome.

It's not clear to me if Trump prodded the Japan PM to ramp up defense spending or she was going to do it anyway. 

 

I met a Japanese girl in my home country many years ago who was critical that Japan doesn't spend enough on defense. 

 

Wasn't it America who put the restrictions on them in the first place?

It is a bit of both, actually. The previous government had started raising, and the new PM added even more. Plus signing agreements with countries such as the Philippines and Australia. 

 

You should have married that girl you met, she sounds like she knows a thing or two...
