Same day border run by air

Featured Replies

Hi, following the recent modifications to the immigration policies is it still ok to do a same day border run by air to, say Vietnam. I am currently here on an O-A 90 day visa and would like to stay in Thailand for an additional 25 days. I have not had any visa exempt entries this year.

What do you mean Non O-A visa.

That is not a 90 day visa.

Do you mean a Non O with a 90 day stamp.

An exit and reenter with reentry permit will not give you extra days.

Clarify your OP.

Edit: I read your previous thread here.

So the option of obtain 60 day extension  to visit wife was explained.

Seems you have opted to exit Thailand and reenter visa exempt.

That's possible.

Same day.... Bad plan.

Or use "safe entry agent"

You want to exit after using the 90 days of your Non-Imm O 90 Visa ?

....  and then simply re-enter Visa Exempt  for 25 days ?

Why not get the paper-work together and apply for an extension of stay ? - its still less hassle than flying... but you do need 400,000 baht seasoned - so maybe thats why ?

If you've been here for 90 days already, and want to fly out and fly in again visa exempt - there is always a risk of refused entry and given the 'changing temperature' on only 2 visa exempts per-year - there is risk of rejection.

As DrJack mentioned - it appears you can get a 60 day extension on your Non-Imm O visa (without having to show a seasoned 400,000 baht).

So... Your sensible option is - go to your local Immigration office (before Non-Imm-O expiry) and ask for a 60-day extension based on marriage.

Thanks, there are various reasons why a 60 day extension is difficult, which is why I am considering the border run flight option as well. I haven't had any visa exempt entries in the last 2 years, so the 2 a year limit shouldn't affect me. I was just wondering if doing it in a single day was risky or not.

Specifically addressing whether a person can do a same-day border run by air.    I have no idea whatsoever if you can do what I did on your visa, with your circumstances, etc.

I did a one day round trip from BKK to VTE a short while back.   I did not intend to do it, but I ended up missing my scheduled flight the day before so I took the chance on a same day trip.    I had entered Thailand on a visa-exempt tourist stamp, received a 30 day extension, but I needed a few more weeks so I had to leave and re-enter and hopefully receive a second VE entry.   I had not done any sort of border run in the past.

When I checked in for the return trip out of VTE, the airline staff asked me questions.   How long are you staying in Thailand, why did you take a one day trip, etc.   I had already booked a trip a couple of weeks later to leave Thailand.   When I showed them the receipt for that trip, they were satisfied and checked me in.

At BKK, I had a whole rigamarole planned in case I was questioned.   The immigration officer didnt blink an eye though.   He just stamped me in and that was that.    YMMV

Do an overnight and enjoy a few hours of freedom if you have a return flight back to your home country show the IO that that should be good enough to at least get a 30 day visa

Can you not just extend by 30 days at local IO ,don’t have to involve wife

Not available on a non-O 90 day entry.

Also consider potential questions on the Vietnam side.

I have had in the past "Why are you coming to Malaysia for 5 hours then leaving" which is a valid question. I was honest and just said I was doing a visa run but was questioned at the counter for a good 5 minutes and old passports were also requested (which I had).

Yes people do it. Is there a chance you get an officer on either side who wants to stop and ask some questions? Also yes.

I did this all the time but would stay a week, Vietnam is a lot of fun and if you're there a week nobody questions your motives. Let's face it we all know you're doing summit dodgy by just bouncing.
