Intense Rainfall Causes Major Patong Flooding

Severe flooding struck Patong, a popular tourist destination, following sudden downpours. On November 18 at 4:30 PM, local police issued warnings about the submerged roads, advising motorists to steer clear of several key intersections. Officers led by Patong Police Superintendent Police Colonel Chalermchai Hirasawat were actively managing the situation.

The floods resulted from intense rains and rapid runoff from nearby hills, creating hazardous conditions across the region. Critical areas affected include the Patong Hospital Intersection, Nanai Soi 8, Pearl Roundabout, and the Fire Station Intersection, rendering them inaccessible for smaller vehicles. Despite some intersections being passable, minor flooding and traffic congestion were reported, complicating the movement.

Patong Municipality urged residents to avoid flood-prone areas, with additional warnings about potential runoff risks near hills. This comes after officials had earlier cautioned the public against expected flash floods and adverse weather conditions triggered by the southwesterly monsoon winds. The Municipality advised the public to check electrical installations in affected areas to prevent further hazards.

Experts highlighted the persistent monsoon conditions affecting Phuket, with Governor Saransak Srikruanetra previously warning of heavy rainfall and strong winds impacting the region. The weather has continued to disrupt travel and daily life, with local authorities actively monitoring conditions to mitigate risks.

Looking ahead, local agencies remain vigilant, preparing for potential future rain events and advising residents to stay informed through official channels. The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office is available for emergencies at 076-342600, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Sudden flooding caused severe traffic disruptions in Patong.
  • Hillside runoff intensified the flood impact in major roadways.
