Police have arrested a 19-year-old woman after residents in Phra Samut Chedi, Samut Prakan, discovered a monitor lizard eating the body of a newborn baby beneath a house on 28 November 2025. The grisly discovery led officers from Phra Samut Chedi Police Station to identify the victim as a female infant, whose remains were found inside a red bag weighted with a large stone. The incident has shocked the local community and prompted an urgent investigation into how the baby died and how the body came to be concealed at the scene.

The case began when residents in the Nai Khlong Bang Pla Kot area noticed a monitor lizard lying beside a home, gnawing on the infant’s remains until the body’s stomach ruptured. Officers later located a red bag near the site containing the stone believed to have been used to weigh the body down. Police inquiries quickly focused on a young woman named “View”, aged 19 and originally from Pathum Thani, who was traced to her workplace at a private company on Rama IV Road.

During questioning, View tearfully claimed she had been unaware of her pregnancy, saying she felt no movement and continued to have what she believed were near-normal monthly periods. She stated that the incident occurred between 22.00 and 23.00 on either Tuesday or Wednesday, after she had returned home from work. While showering, she reportedly slipped on fallen soap, striking her head and hip and then noticed blood running down her thigh before the baby suddenly fell to the bathroom floor.

She told officers she panicked, cut the umbilical cord with scissors, cleaned the room and hid the body in the red bag. She said she added a stone from outside the house before placing the bag under the raised floor of the property, then returned indoors behaving as if nothing had happened. The situation only came to light when the monitor lizard retrieved the body, leading residents to alert police, who traced the evidence back to her workplace.

Naewna reported that police have taken an initial statement from View and released her pending further investigation. Officers are awaiting a full autopsy report from the Police General Hospital’s Institute of Forensic Medicine, to determine whether the mother caused the infant’s death. She will be called back to hear any charges once the findings are complete.

OMG....

Although widely available, abortions are still illegal in Thailand.  However, prosecutions are rare.

Yes, abortion is legal in Thailand under specific conditions, following amendments to the law in 2021 and 2022. Abortion is permissible without conditions for up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, with counseling required between 12 and 20 weeks. Termination is allowed at any stage of pregnancy if the life or health of the pregnant person is at risk, if the fetus has severe abnormalities, or if the pregnancy resulted from sexual assault or is in a person under 15 years old

Wow!  I've heard of obese women failing to notice they're pregnant, but this girl looks in good shape, it is inconceivable that she wouldn't have known she was pregnant!
