It annoys me when Thai businesses put up the Christmas tree Nov

Featured Replies

Why dont Thais understand Christmas. Putting up trees in November like that is normal or something.

I had a go at the manager of my language school about this. She just smiled and laughed.

Up on the 1st Dec. Down on the 27th is normal in my nanny state where I grew up.

What is wrong with these people.

Whats wrong with people indeed...    ... I mean, like, who doesn't know...  I mean the tree goes up on the first Sunday of December, not the 1st of December...   and I mean, who doesn't know

  • Good, that annoyance is exactly why they do it.

  • You have got to be kidding. This is pure troll or pure idiocy.

When will Macy’s Christmas Windows be unveiled?

The wait is nearly over! The city’s most cheerful block will be unveiled on Thursday, November 20th, and they will officially open for public viewing starting at 4 pm. They will be on display until January.

In almost all of Europe, and in other countries too, Christmas decorations, including the Christmas tree, are already up in November!

The only slightly annoying thing is the constant playing of Christmas carols... 😉

Why would Thais know anything about Christmas? Why don't falangs know the rules for Wais or Songkran? The Christmas tree has no meaning in Thailand and I am just fine with that.

Love it. Sadly there are some on here who this will go right over there heads. Obviously the 'progressive' leftists that get it will be outraged. Well done for posting this. It's a great meme.

"These people" are possibly more  normal than you !

Catering to the commercialism opportunity of Xmas, Christmas , or whatever name given is centered on retail ing.

That you consider a week appropriate for a probably fictional single date of significance demonstrates a typically superior Western assumption that there should be abject servility to your foreign interpretation of theological fantasy.

In my home country (not a nanny state), Christmas stuff is sold beginning in the second half of August.

I usually discard my Christmas tree around end of February.

Twelfth night - yes.

First Sunday of December - not what I was taught, but the first day of Advent which is usually between 27th November and 3rd December.

Not all that different to buddha statues being displayed in saunas, bars, shops of all kind here in the west, as a simple decoration -- quite often in less than head height or even where people might point their feet when they are sitting.

In the end, the christmas tree is not even a Christian symbol; the tradition of putting candles on a tree is maybe 400 years old, in the USA merely half of that (German immigrants). Walking around in medieval Europe, at best Christmas apples and evergreen twigs over the door where the go-to tradition, people from that time would not even recognize what we are doing here (there were no Christmas carols either, for example, nor were there many of the typical "Christmas staples" that are usually eaten nowadays).

How many in the west understand Christmas?

Want to do a street survey?

(not to think about pentecost, my bet less than 5% have an idea).

In Germany typical "Christmas candy stuff" pops up in October.

Chocolate Santa's since weeks.

Thais understand business.

That's all.

The  display of Christmas stuff alone does not annoy me.

But endless loops of Jingle Bells can drive me out of a shop.

My friend's wife leaves Christmas decorations up year round, inside and outside the house. Every night, all year long, lights on the house are glowing and it makes me happy that I am not their neighbor.

I see a few places have the 'Happy New year' sign up for years..:coffee1:
