It's painless, not invasive and therefore a much safer procedure. You could ask for a CTA which is the same test as the CT CAC but involves injecting you with a dye so that the arteries light up like an Xmas tree and they can see if there are any blockages in the arteries. A CT CAC without the dye only measures the thickness of the calcium in the heart's arteries and calculates the risk of cardiac events - but it's a bit blind. (edit to add your kidneys need to be in good kip for a CTA because the dye can cause them harm). Angiogram (I believe) has a surgeon threading a catheter through arteries in your groin up to your heart along with full dose radiation to see where they're going and look for blockages. Angiograpy (like CTA) just uses dye and finds much the same thing without the catheter. etc.
