Audi A2 could do 100 mpg back in year 2000. Such a shame the hyper efficient engine route was forgotten to go down the EV route which I view as a scam seeing as the lifespan of EVs is very short.

FIAT Tapolino in Italy

But only goes 28 mph .... can't drive on the highway ?

Now if they'd allow smaller diesel pickups in the US.

Trump is right. Small super efficient ICE cars are much more sensible.

Unfortunately I doubt it will ever happen they are to busy overcharging us for things we don’t want or need.the auto makers won’t kill the golden goose.Id love to see the Toyota champ available here or the Suzuki carry.I don’t personally need a truck now my jeep gladiator is all I need but I might go for the carry if cheap enough they are economical on fuel and practical for most stuff.doubt it will happen sadly.

Sounds like the boss just gave an order and the departments of transportation and environment agreed to it.

Can you share your research? Here is an interesting page to ponder before you run your mouth again.

Oh, but just a few days ago you were bragging about your 5.7 hemi. Maybe that was just a wet dream

When the population can't afford decent sized cars any more, because of the tariffs applied, you have to change course

They will have to make one with reinforced back seat + front end for the flagpole

Hilarious. It's an advert for EVs Peter. It is also wildly misleading.

EVs have 5 massive problems. Range anxiety and woeful charging facilities, life span, depreciation, cost of replacing the batteries and fires are all but impossible to extinguish particulary in a multi level car park or underground garage. The advert you linked to adresses none of them.

I can see an EV being useful if you never need to drive far and can charge it at home, but realistically ICEs are better in nearly every respect. Have you even seen the depreciation on 4 or 5 year old EVs?🤣

In Japan they are called "Kei" (meaning "light") cars. Max engine size 660cc, restrictions on width and length as well. They are often used as "second cars" in families, usually the wife's car so she can go grocery shopping, pick the kids up from activities, etc. You do see them on highways too these days.

I had one as my first car here, a Mitsubishi Minica. It wasn't bad to tool around the city, easy to park, etc. But zero acceleration or soundproofing. That was 20 plus years ago though, the new ones are much better built. Plus you can pick them up for USD $10k new.

But Japan is rich enough for people to use this as a 2nd car.

Also, this is Trump and US here.

But regarding Thailand, scooters are the main transportation for many.

If they replaced scooters with these things in Thailand, there would be way fewer deaths on the roads.

10K is still a bit too much for many, though I guess.

Genuine question......why does he need to approve tiny (normal sized) cars to built in America?

Is there/was there a minimum size law?

Just read up on it.....this is about relaxing US safety standards that small cars can't meet.

One of the criteria is "must have steering wheels that fit tiny hands".

When he was a kid he saw 20 guys get out of one of these tiny cars, he's been impressed ever since.

Trump is right. Small super efficient ICE cars are much more sensible.

The 2001 A2 (not 2000) powered by a 1.2 litre, 3 cylinder diesel, with less power than my 800cc motorbike, achieved a CLAIMED 94 mpg. The engine tech was not the reason for the high mpg number. It was aerodynamics and weight saving.

"It had no power steering, air conditioning or other extras, with the only optional extra being body coloured door handles and wing mirrors. There were no optional extras because optional equipment adds weight and therefore reduces economy. It had a fixed rear seat cushion."

Not exactly a "forgotten hyper efficient" technology.

And here we are. All the hoaxes turned to crap, what do the irrational haters have left? Mocking his disabilities of course🤣 reminds me of the time they falsely accused Trump of mocking a retarded reporter. He was mocking him for being a cretin not for being disabled, yet the hivemind have no problem mocking Trump for disabilities. Typical.

Give me an Audi A2 over any EV on the market anyday. Loads of A2's still on the road, lets see how many 20 year EVs are still on the road shall we🤣

No brag just fact. In the US a 5.7 hemi is no big deal. Having the fuel efficient 4 cyl diesels manual trans would be cost effective.

Electric cars in UK last as long as petrol and diesel vehicles, study finds
International research team based findings on 300m records from MOT data to estimate failure rates of all cars

An international team of researchers has estimated that an electric car will have a lifespan of 18.4 years, compared with 18.7 years for petrol cars and 16.8 years for diesels, according to a peer-reviewed study published on Friday in the journal Nature Energy. The findings were based on 300m records from compulsory annual MOT tests of roadworthiness.

And keep in mind that the technology is much newer. ICE vehicles have been around for over 100 years.

Certainly, tiny ICE vehcles would be a huge improvement over what Americans buy now. The thing is, American car makers have tried selling small vehicles in the past and been repeatedly burned. Americans keep on buy larger and larger vehicles.

AI via Gemini:

  • The average new vehicle weight has climbed, with pickup trucks gaining substantial mass (e.g., 30% heavier from 1975-2021) and SUVs adding significantly more weight than lighter sedans, notes Capital One and Smart Growth America.
  • Dimensions: Width and length have increased, with some data showing average US car width growing by over 17% and length by 12% just between 2013-2023, making them bulkier, according to Saxtons and this article from Finn.
  • Market Shift: Sedans, once dominant, have been overtaken by SUVs and trucks, which are inherently larger and heavier, explains this article from Sustainability by Numbers and this article from the Zebra.

Very true. You can say the same thing about many consumer products, from home sizes to drinks at McDonalds.  Our American cousins believe that size matters!

You can clearly notice that from the size of their bottoms

It does like like there is a strong genetic connection. AI via Gemini:

Key Trends
  • Shift to Light Trucks: In the early 1990s, the market was dominated by passenger cars. By 2018, Canadians were buying two trucks (a category that includes most SUVs, crossovers, and pickups) for every car sold. As of 2022, light-duty trucks accounted for the vast majority of new vehicle sales, making them the most common type of vehicle on Canadian roads.
  • Increased Dimensions: This change in market composition has led to an overall increase in the average dimensions of vehicles. Between 1994 and 2019, the average vehicle's weight rose by more than 25%, its height and wheelbase increased by approximately 7%, and its surface area (footprint) grew by 11%.
  • Safety and Features: Within specific vehicle segments, manufacturers have also made individual models larger over time to incorporate advanced safety features (e.g., crumple zones, more airbags) and meet consumer demands for increased cabin space and comfort.
  • Impact: The result is a national fleet of vehicles that are heavier, taller, and bulkier, which has implications for fuel consumption, infrastructure, and road safety.

You do come out with some howlers Alan. How many of these 18.4 year EVs are on the roads? Oh, so its pure guesswork.

There are many many 50, 60, 70 or more year old cars still on the road. Can we imagine how many Nissan Leafs will be on the road in 50 years?🤣
