Getting rid of Maduro -- GOOD. The consequences of doing it the way Trump has -- VERY RISKY. The "wisdom" or lack thereof (bizarre to use the word wisdom relating to Trump) of his decision will not be

NYTimes headline this morning:

Trump Says U.S. Will ‘Run the Country’ After Capture of Maduro

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell cited the rule in the summer of 2002 when warning President George W. Bush of the consequences of his planned military action in Iraq:

"You are going to be the proud owner of 25 million people," he told the president. "You will own all their hopes, aspirations, and problems. You'll own it all." Privately, Powell and Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage called this the Pottery Barn rule: You break it, you own it.

From Sen. Mike Lee:

Just got off the phone with @SecRubio

He informed me that Nicolás Maduro has been arrested by U.S. personnel to stand trial on criminal charges in the United States, and that the kinetic action we saw tonight was deployed to protect and defend those executing the arrest warrant

This action likely falls within the president’s inherent authority under Article II of the Constitution to protect U.S. personnel from an actual or imminent attack *

OMG. You must be one of the few that voted them in? But I agree, they have done more damage than several previous governments combined. I have never known the place in such disarray and a PM/gov so out of touch and hated. I would gladly have numpty Trump take over than see the place go off a cliff.

Maduro fell for the free candy trick

Maduro won an election by devious means .

Perhaps Trump brought him over for consultations?

What Trump has done is illegal.

Expect an arrest warrant from the ICC.

I think you'll find it was a law enforcement action supported with and by the military.

I must confess that I wasn't aware that US law applied in foreign countries...

Perhaps that is where using your military comes in?

Sure of course. I bet Iran, Columbia and several other countries are next. Drain the sickness and dieseased from the world..

"Trump: US has 'captured' President Maduro as he strikes Caracas".

Now that's what I call a distraction - the mother of all distractions perhaps?

Start a war which has the potential to burn out of control!

You are wrong, not illegal. Your fantasy of an arrest warrant from the ICC is cartoonish thinking , are you a lefty by any chance?

Invading another country is illegal under international law. I see no difference in Trump has done with what Putin did in Ukraine.

International Law also states quite clearly and succinctly that Venezuela's oil belongs to Venezuela. Trump stated getting the oil was an objective, that makes the action illegal.

I'm British so I don't understand the term lefty or righty, it's meaningless to me.

I'm sure at least one country will refer Trump to the ICC, but I'm also sure you're right in your thinking that nothing will be done whilst he is in power.

he didn't dare do this to Putin

Now I guess the precedent has been set.

Maybe Putin will "arrest" Trump.

Since Trump has established that anyone in DC can be bought maybe the highest bidder (Elon?) can have Trump "arrested".

I can only imagine how the Trump fanboys are responding to this.

I love this from Sasha Stone this morning:

"To the Left, it’s the Boy Who Cried Wolf on repeat. This military action is on par with renaming the Kennedy Center and building the ballroom. Everything Trump does is met with the same amount of hysteria. So, how to take them seriously?

For what it’s worth, the people of Venezuela are celebrating today. The Democrats are, of course, siding with the brutal dictator. Whatever happens next, I’m happy for the people of Venezuela."

Sums it up perfectly.

I remember when the people of Iraq were celebrating the downfall of Saddam Hussein in a war that Trump says he was against.

Not altogether accurate.

  • Yes, some Venezuelans are celebrating today, particularly opposition supporters who see Maduro’s capture as liberation.

  • But many others are fearful or angry, viewing the U.S. strike as illegal intervention.

  • The atmosphere in Caracas is deeply divided, with celebration and condemnation happening side by side.

Yeah, it's a shame the way the left flushed that victory down the toilet.

You must be proud.

Or the Guardian.

Exactly the same as the US did in Iraq and Afghanistan. Fake war for Oil.

You yanks should be embarrassed.

Netanyahu will use the distraction to kill a few hundred more in the coming days.

Let's hope so.

You have to be somewhere to the right of Attila the Hun to be calling the Bush Administration left wing.
