Why that model? Any refurb Thinkpad T or X class is military spec and makes a great choice for a laptop. I'm typing on a T490, 16GB with an I7 processor and it works very well. I also have an X250 as a spare.

Thanks for the contributions.

My preference is a T480 because it is very easy to upgrade. I recognise that other people may favour different models. I will run Linux, not Windows.

I will get someone to try Lazada, and Shopee for me.

DocTom.

Wise choice.

Also, the ThinkPad is the best laptop out there.

I would buy one, if it were not for the fact that I have no need for portable computing.

Used is good.

I have heard that there are companies in China that supply decent used equipment, such as both iPhones and laptops, used, and reliable.

I would try to get one from China, rather than Thailand.

I just wonder how many local large companies in Thailand do periodic upgrades, or selling off of large numbers of laptops, as might more be the case in the USA or China.

LazMall for genuine products. Others are often good fakes.

Look on facebook market place for your area, there will no doubt be lots of used laptop shops that would likely have them.

Thanks again for contributions.

Lazada and Shopee proved fruitless.

I have no idea how to seek a used laptop in China.

The best source of used Thinkpads seems to be Ebay, and I was near to buying one from Ebay in the UK and have a friend bring it as hand luggage when he returned last week to Thailand. But unfortunately he was unable to carry an extra item, so that plan failed.

I am still pondering about an import from UK, but friends have warned me that Thai customs authorities are prone to impose very large import duties, making the price of item plus duty unrealistic. So I am in limbo on this project for now.

I welcome any further comments, DocTom.

I bought one on Ebay when I was back in the summer, an X1 it was a couple of years old but never been used, still had a few months warranty left.

Not a problem bringing it back, a few years ago I asked at customs on arrival and she just shook her head.

I also have an older Win 10 model that I use for travelling and as the new one still had the original packaging I put that in hold baggage. We went to Morocco before returning to Thailand and BA made me take it out and I had to carry both in the cabin. The return on Emirates was different, they allow laptops in the hold so no problem.

Sandyf, thanks for the account of your experience. I am not sure though that it relates directly to what I would need to do to procure from Ebay.

I would need to buy from Ebay on their UK site, and have the vendor dispatch to me here in Thailand. Most vendors seem to use Ebay facilities for delivery and charge various prices, some of which but not all include a Thai import charge; but all seem to state that additional charges may be imposed at customs in Thailand. This is what happened to a friend, who decided to abandon his clothing items when faced with a very large customs fee.

So my import, if I proceed, would have the laptop in a package placed in the aircraft hold. (This is what I wanted to avoid when I asked a friend to bring it as carry-on luggage, but he was unable to help.) Then I presume that it would be inspected by customs officials, and subject to further charges if they choose.

This seems a bit different to the experience that you related. Or have I misunderstood you?

I will be grateful for any further comments or information before I decide to proceed, or not, with purchase and import. Thanks again, DocTom.

I gave you a link to to a Lazada seller in the above post, one of many selling the laptop you say you want...if you insist on using UK ebay then you may well be hit by taxes and high shipping fees and have a harder time returning it if it arrives broken.

Lazada or Shopee will 'mostly' tell you if the product is shipped from China/overseas

another clue would be a long estimate time of arrival when you goto the checkout page.

And also Lazada lets you pay Cash On Delivery..and you can open he package to make sure you actually get what you ordered and refuse delivery/payment if its wrong.

I have only ever carried them myself, not just the one, over the years I have brought back 4 used laptops, 3 x Lenovo & an HP.

Having it sent to you would be a different ball game.

Depending on the airline, your friend could have put it in his hold luggage which would have been fairly straightforward.

Just a note to support your plan to purchase. I bought a refurbished T470 around 6 years ago and have been hammering out work with it (business reports, IPOs, etc.) maybe 7 hours a day on average since. Changed the power supply twice - cheap repair. I bought it on the recommendation of an IT website stating the Lenovo had the best keyboard of its class.

I purchased the unit on-line, with a fairly limited dealer warranty, which was a risk in case there was a catastrophic fault that did not emerge for a while (as happened with a despicable Apple iMac 24, whose multiplicity of faults put me off that brand permanently).

Go for it.

I wouldn't discount earlier models, they are still pretty usable.....I have a T460p (i7-6820HQ - 3.6 GHz , NVIDIA 940mx, 16GB, 512GB SSD) I loaded up Ubuntu 25.10 on, and it runs great. It's my old work PC I brought here from the USA back in 2016, I am using it to get familiar with Ubuntu before eventually installing it on my newer X1 Carbon Gen9, then I'll probably buy another Windows 11 Pro version X1 Carbon Gen14 or Gen15 when they arrive.

thanks for all your contributions. I have looked at Lazada. It is not an easy site to navigate on a laptop, but as far as I can tell there are no T480 models available just now; the link took me to a T480S which model is less upgradable than the T480.

I shall continue to monitor Lazada for a T480, and try to find further options for someone to hand deliver from the UK or USA.

Thanks again for the useful advice. DocTom.

thanks Ismeuno. Obviously you are more adept than I in navigating the Lazada site.

However when I opened your link I could not find a price for the item, and the quantity button refused any input other than zero, so I concluded that they have no items in stock. Or am I wrong?

Opens fine for me

Price without touch 6,900

Price with touch 7900

Both say 'almost sold out buy now'

As indicated earlier, you are wrong. Refresh the page(F5 key). 7900 for one with a touchscreen. 6900 for the normal screen model.
