UPDATE

Two Killed After Crane Collapses on Rama II Elevated Road

image.jpeg

Two people were killed after a construction crane collapsed onto vehicles on Rama II Road in Samut Sakhon province on 15 January 2026, prompting road closures and warnings for motorists to avoid the area. The crane fell from an elevated road construction site onto the outbound southern lanes, crushing at least two cars below. Emergency services confirmed the fatalities at the scene, while access to the site was initially restricted due to safety concerns.

The incident occurred at approximately 09:15 near the approach to the Tha Chin River bridge, opposite the Talay Thai market and close to the Paris Hotel. The concrete beams and launching gantry crane collapsed onto the central reservation of Rama II Road, a major arterial route linking Bangkok to the south. Authorities said the situation remained hazardous in the immediate aftermath, delaying full access for rescue teams.

Initial checks confirmed two vehicles were trapped under the fallen crane, with two deaths reported. Police, rescue workers and relevant agencies were dispatched to control the area and assist those affected. Some traffic lanes were closed to ensure public safety and to allow emergency operations to proceed.

Video footage captured by a dashboard camera and later shared on Facebook by user Real Champ (Zerovasab) shows the moment the crane fell onto vehicles travelling below. The clip has been widely circulated online and underscores the suddenness of the collapse. Officials have not released the identities of the victims.

image.jpeg

The collapse happened in an active construction zone for the Rama II elevated roadway project. This stretch of road has seen ongoing large-scale construction works, which have previously disrupted traffic flow. Authorities reiterated calls for motorists to use alternative routes while the scene is secured.

This construction project carries a total budget of 1.86 billion baht and is being delivered by Italian-Thai Development Plc (ITD), which is responsible for the civil engineering works. The Department of Highways confirmed that the incident occurred within the designated construction zone of the elevated motorway.

Khoasod reported that traffic restrictions are likely to remain in place until the crane is fully removed and the area deemed safe. Authorities have advised drivers to avoid Rama II Road and use alternative routes where possible. Further announcements are expected once inspections and rescue operations are completed.

Key Takeaways

• A construction crane collapsed on Rama II Road on 15 January 2026, killing two people.

• At least two vehicles were crushed, and the area was closed due to ongoing safety risks.

• Authorities are investigating the cause and reviewing construction safety measures.

Yup, I'm sure they will find a suitable scapegoat.

Probably a low paid worker, preferably Khmer (for the Cambodia connection) and preferably dead so he can't defend himself!

Shocking dashcam video, the last one, only seconds away from being crushed.

I have never heard of so many cranes falling down like in Thailand. Can anyone fix it , or should we be worried every time there is a crane nearby ?

The white van was immediately taken in for hosing down.

That has got to be one of the most unsafe highways in Thailand and that's saying a lot.

Best if the Thais ust surrender their pride, admit that these that projects on this scale are way beyond their scope, and let the Chinese come in and finish these highways and build High-Speed Rail and high speed cargo, which would take a lot of pressure off the highways.

They could simply default on the loans later, just like nearly every other country on the Belt and Road initiative is doing, and it's no big deal.

You can usually judge the level of corruption in a country by the condition of its roads and civil engineering.

Reaching straight for “steel weakness” is a familiar deflection and often a convenient cover story.

These cranes are used worldwide without issue. When failures keep happening in one place, the problem isn’t nationality or race — it’s much more likely to be how the equipment is specified, operated, maintained, and supervised. That points to cost-cutting, corner-cutting, and money “leaking” out of projects long before safety is considered.

Racist explanations are easy. Systemic corruption and poor enforcement are the harder, but more accurate, answers.

That would destroy the way civil engineering contracts are handed out in Thailand....

Using crap, cheap Chinese steel & technology with ZERO maintenance and supervision with NO regard to safety. IMHO - Close the whole effin lot down, get all thoes who received corruption monies to donate it to victims = Then I woke up remembering where I have spent the last 25 years.

Spare me days. TTF I'm too old to see the end of this and hopefully it will not migrate to my neighbourhood.

Safety after Profit. Welcome to Thailand.

If the Thai drivers don't catch you, then the Thai construction workers will.

Start looking at Thailands very poor construction site safety plans or risk assessments... even crane operator experience certification?

I hate driving down Rama II to Cha Am and Hua Hin. Construction seems like it hasn't stopped since 2003. And I've always been extra worried when traffic isn't moving and we are under those huge structures. It's not a surprise this happened. RIP to the victims.

Chinese company. How utterly stupid the Thai government can be to allow Chinese companies to build infrustructure. It will all keep collapsing, crumbling, sinking, falling apart, killing innocent people -all for a great "Chinese deal."

So far we've had railways and highways. What's next? Swampy? Welcome to Thailand. Safety last.

Have there been any personnel changes to either the construction company or the government after previous investigations were completed? Or have excuses been accepted and the same people are in charge?
