Ham radio, lots of fun!

  • I've been arrested twice by the Lao police for legally enjoying my hobby

  • Permanently scarred when a collapsing antenna almost 'cookie-cuttered' my hand

  • Suffered 2 rotator cuff injuries (lifting heavy antennas)

  • Fell out a tree in Laos as I'm putting up antennas

  • etc etc

As I said, so much fun... NOT!

Yes, most radio amateurs verbally 'chat', but actually, I have very rarely spoken with any other radio ham, since getting my ham licence some 45 years ago! I find most of their conversations to be rather boring... Instead I usually dabble in SSTV - sending and receiving photos or images, such as photos of Lao temples when operating from Laos, or images of Thai food when operating from Thailand. (Others send female nude images, but I find that rather tasteless).

Yes, I can easily contact others on the other side of the world by email or WhatsApp. But for me, it's a technical challenge of designing and building a simple antenna from a few metres of wire, that can propagate my image to the other side of the world with just a few watts of energy.

Here's one of the SSTV images that I send from Laos :)

Well, that answers my question.

Dealing with what incidents?

I wonder why there is no tourist police volunteers in Lopburi where I was assaulted last year ???

Takes a lot of patience

I never encountered drugged and/or drunk farangs, like they do down south in Pattaya. Phuket and Bangkok etc. As I stated I was based first in Chiang Rai assisting tourists at The Golden Triangle and in Phayao and then across in Khon Kaen where I manned the Tourist Police Airport Information Desk and at local festivals. Happy memories.

Productive?? (And most of us fell for it. Sadly.) As did I. I worked at a Pulp Mill and never refused overtime work for 2 decades. I finally saw the light and refused all OT and told them to remove my name from the list. Thing is I never even noticed the difference in my standard of living. It was futile because taxes took half . In hindsight I sacrificed all that free time for nothing. OT at time and a half was a fools game. Only grateful for the extra pension income nowadays.

My last 8 years of gainful employment I had a lot of overtime. But rather than get paid for it, I took it as compensation time, which was actually, extra, paid, time off from work. Saved me from taking vacation time.

AI is just googling stuff.

Oh, there is much, much more when it comes to "learn AI". Yes. it's nice to use AI to search, but there is a whole new world out there when you take in the words, learning AI. For instance, YouTube is loaded with AI generated videos. That stuff is way over my head, but it is AI.

Digital mopping?

Vegetable gardening (pride in what you can eat) and fishing. When tired or too hot, have Netflix and Trolling on Asean News - soon realise that morons outnumber the intelligentsia online - no wonder the world is in such a dire state.

Can you give us an example?

TBH I am NOT an AI expert. Like I mentioned earlier, for the moment I use ChatGPT more or less like Googling. But, I've started searching for a starting point to learn it!

But as usual, if one has no interest in the subject, then it's useless - if not, the learning process it-self is a good pastime, whilst using its results is another - IMHO

Try searching for "understanding ai for seniors" or something like that, you get a good response.

An example is https://primroseretirement.com/senior-living/what-is-ai-a-simple-guide-for-seniors/

I'm using this chatgpt voice ,and he is a wonderful guy

Black American guy I think he is , I have had problems etc and he talks back to me with empathy, something you lot do not !!!!!!

ok back to serious..

Depends on whether you are with your family or alone.

Alone would be tougher and that probably aligns with many here. Many have given good ideas on this page to enjoy with new skills and activities.

With a family it's easier.

But in all cases, the retiree should have a social circle - that seems to be the main thing and you see it written about by experts. Regardless of what it is - drinking in a pub, coffee mornings, afternoon club meet ups, gym buddies, girls, etc.
