Best place to live for a runner?

Featured Replies

WDYT if you are also into this? I know about Fitness Street etc but let's start from runner's point of view 😀

I do not like to do outdoor activities in Thailand during the polluted season, and seing people running in the parks in bangkok do not appy to me. What kind of running do you do ?

Koh Lanta I think is the best choice to run, honestly. Both on tarmac and also beach

Too many variable for a simple answer.

Solo or with others?

Distance.

Frequency

I prefer to run with others, usually less than 10K, 3 or more times a week.

Bangkok

Hash House Harriers.

He is in Phuket, so the Patong HHH would be better.

Quite a few runners at Nai Harn Lake, Chalong Dam and Bang Wad Dam.

You could even pay a pack of ladyboys to chase. Really get the heart pumping.

OK but the OP asked about the best place to live?

Phuket has a few groups but I'm not sure if they all run on different days. There are a few monthly groups.

But Bangkok has Mon, Wed, Thurs, Sat. every week plus a couple of bi-weekly groups.

So for a 3-times a week type runner Bangkok might be better.

When I first read the title I thought it was a thread about best places to hide from the law.

In the Phuket forum.

I prefer to run in daylight, so some shade is important, in an area where there's traffic free routes with lots of things to see during my run.

When I worked in Bangkok I lived near the elevated walkway between Lumpini and Benjakitti Parks.

Now I prefer Bangsaen where I can run on the beach path shaded by coconut trees and people watch while running.

Phuket runs multiple times a week. Has different settings, family, women only, man only.

running in the jungle is a lot healthier than in BKK traffic.

Living in Phuket and running regularly, I find the area you choose really depends on what kind of runner you are.

For road/trail runners: Rawai and Nai Harn are hard to beat. The roads around Nai Harn Lake and up through Sai Yuan are quiet and shaded. Chalong Dam and Bang Wad Reservoir are popular for morning runs.

For people who also want to cross-train: Chalong and Kathu have a huge concentration of Muay Thai camps and gyms. Bang Tao has the most CrossFit boxes and modern international gyms.

I use roamfit.net to check what training facilities are in each area - covers 700+ gyms, Muay Thai camps, yoga studios, etc across the island. Useful if you want to map your neighbourhood options before choosing where to rent.

My personal pick for a runner who also trains: Rawai. Quiet roads, Nai Harn for beach runs, multiple Muay Thai camps, and good yoga nearby. Less touristy than Patong/Kamala.
