Non-O Marriage: 40k or 400k for 90-Day Visa?

Featured Replies

Non-O Marriage (entry in Thailand from Laos) – 40k or 400k THB for Initial 90-Day Visa? Processing Time?

Hello everyone,

I am planning to apply for an initial Non-O Marriage visa (90 days) in Vientiane, Laos.

To clarify from the start:
I am referring to the first 3-month Non-O visa issued abroad, not the subsequent 12-month extension applied for inside Thailand.

I have reviewed the official instructions, but I would appreciate clarification based on recent real-world experience.

1️⃣ Financial Requirement – 40,000 or 400,000 THB?

For the 1-year extension inside Thailand, the requirement is clearly:

  • 400,000 THB in a Thai bank account
    or

  • 40,000 THB monthly income

However, I have received informal indications specifically regarding applications made in Laos suggesting that for the initial 90-day Non-O visa, the financial requirement may not be 400,000 THB, but possibly only 40,000 THB, or at least a lower threshold than what is typically referenced for extensions.

So my questions are:

  • Has anyone recently applied in Vientiane for the initial 90-day Non-O Marriage visa?

  • Were you asked to show 400,000 THB, 40,000 THB, or another amount?

  • Does the financial requirement depend on nationality?

  • What financial evidence was actually requested (Thai bank book, foreign account statement, income proof, etc.)?

2️⃣ Current Processing Time in Vientiane

In the past, processing was sometimes reported as:

  • 3 working days
    Later reports suggested:

  • 7–10 days
    More recently:

  • around 3–5 working days

Can anyone confirm realistic current processing times for a Non-O Marriage visa via the eVisa system in Vientiane?

My Situation

  • Currently in Thailand on a Visa Exemption, already extended to the maximum (60 days Visa Exemption + 30-day extension + additional 60-day extension based on visiting Thai spouse).

  • Planning to fly to Vientiane before my current permission of stay expires, in less than three weeks.

  • Will prepare the application in advance and submit once physically in Laos (uploading proof of entry as required).

Any recent firsthand experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Franck

I also have seen the low amount you mentioned.

Suggest you should show 400k in a bank account.

Are you planning on obtaining the extension after the Non O.

Haven't seen recent reports, however 5 days should be possible if you make payment at consulate quickly.

Since you originally entered visa exempt I assume you are aware that you should be able to obtain Non O at immigration. You require 15 days remaining on stamp.

Which immigration office.

Do you have a Thai bank account?

Dear DrJack54
Thanks for your input.

I also have seen the low amount you mentioned.

The indication I received came from someone working for a visa service company, who mentioned that in Laos they are not always asking for the full 400k at the initial visa stage. That said, I understand this is unofficial information and I am trying to verify it through recent firsthand experience.

Suggest you should show 400k in a bank account.

Yes, I agree this would be the safest approach. At the moment, however, I do not yet have the full 400k available in the account, although I expect to meet that requirement in a few months when applying for the extension.

Are you planning on obtaining the extension after the Non O.

Yes, definitely. The intention is to obtain the 1-year extension in Bangkok after entering with the Non-O.

Which immigration office.

Bangkok.

Do you have a Thai bank account?

Yes, I have Thai bank accounts in two different banks.

For additional context:
My current Visa Exemption expires in the second week of March. I also need to return to my home country around 31 March 2026 for about twelve days.

In any case, I would need to exit Thailand before my current permission of stay ends. If obtaining the Non-O from Laos with a lower financial threshold (e.g. 40k instead of 400k at the initial visa stage) is realistically possible, it would currently be the most practical solution for me.

Any recent experience would be appreciated.

Since you need to return home ~31 March, I don't really follow.

If you obtain the Non O as per previous post then you would need to obtain a reentry permit to protect the 90 day stamp.

Why not go home early. Skip the idea of obtaining the Non O in Vientiane.

Obtain the Non O eVisa in passport country. Which is?

By then hopefully the 400k would be possible.

Bottom line is currently your finances are inadequate

That's through a Lao agent for a juicy fee.

How do you intend to re-enter Thailand?
You realise just from the information posted you'll have spent almost 15 days in Thailand withing the last 12 months.

The 400K must be in your Thai bank account for 2 months before you can apply.
You wouldn't qualify for the 40K per month income method unless you can obtain an Embassy Income letter.

Typo, should read 150 days.
