My-First-Time: How much should I charge to work in a bar?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

After many years of boring retirement, I have decided to rejoin the workforce.

This time, however, I will do something new, and try….New Tricks.

Yes, TRICKS, and I rule nothing out.

However, I will begin slow, and easy, as Tina said, and as she sang so well.

The reason I am here posting this Topic today is that I need your advice.

For starters, the owner of the bar has asked me to just talk to women who enter off the street.

He says all I need to do is sit at one of the tables, and wait.

When some woman sits down, then I must start talking.

There will be no alcohol involved, because it is not THAT sort of bar.

(Also, strictly talk, only, and no flubber, if you have seen that great film.)

My MAIN question is:  How much should I charge for 30 minutes of talk. And how much for 45 minutes of talk. And, if the talk is going well, then how much should I charge for an hour of talk?

There have recently been many posts posted on TV concerning inflation rates in the USA and in Thailand.  I think the inflation rate in Thailand is not too bad. But, still…given that inflation exists, how much should I charge for talk in 2026?

I have never done this before, but the world is changing, and the rate of change, or the intensity of change, is breathtaking.

How much would YOU charge?

And, how much should I charge, as a newbie?

This is not an idle question.

As soon as I get my work permit, then I will be seated at the bar.

I have already compiled a list of my favorite Topics to discuss, taken from years of TV.

This is NOT A JOKE, Folks…

Thank you, and…

Best regards,

Gamma

Note:  How much?  I mean, I do not wish to gouge women. But, I want to be fair.

Slow and,...

Easy.

You should pay the bar as it would be very likely that people will run away after 5 minutes and go somewhere else.

And that is as it should be.

It would be wrong, in a juice bar, to hold them captive.

Fortunately, I have a captive audience on TV.

One must always have a backup.

After reading many of the replies here, I think the problem is that nobody really reads your topics. All I do is read the subject header, and then, if I am going to reply at all, I would make a quick one based on the title. That is quite likely what a lot of other people do and why you end up with mainly humorous replies rather than any serious ones. The posts you make are too fraught with a high level of disjointed incoherency. Since I do not think you are capable of improving the readability of what you write, the best thing you can do is at least improve the subject headers so that the replies you get are more marginally on topic.

Would Bt1000 per hour be too high?

Would Bt700 per hour be too low?

I cannot be the only one here seeking this information.

I disagree. Gamma should never grow up, there has to be one constant on Aseannow!

I think you will find 10k a month + 30% of drinks and bar fines is closer to normal. How do you look in a bikini? It still will not get you a work permit.

It's a completely silly windup. If it were real, it would be unbelievably foolish.

I can easily imagine the Labor Department deciding that a foreign national is practicing psychiatry in Thailand without a medical license, without a work permit, and in a profession that is restricted to Thai citizens. That seems like a very quick way to get a retirement visa revoked and a one way trip out of the country.

And then there is the part about expecting to earn 750 to 1000 baht per hour. That really sounds desperate and does not inspire much confidence.

I asked for advice.

If and only if you have a work permit,

I suggest 25 satang per hour as a fee.

If this is truly something that you are planning on doing then you should have a business plan that details everything. Your costs, time, advertising etc. then you will be able to get an idea of what you need to break even and then go from there.

You can’t expect to run any sort of business without having all of the details.

If this actually works out then you could increase your rates, but realistically they will be low. Maybe start with a tip jar and get an idea if anyone is willing to tip you and, if so, how much. This is the worst place to post questions about your business plan.

Are others doing it? How much are they charging? How long have they been doing it? What type of place are they doing it?

Do your research first.

As are many retirees, unless they something that occupies their mind. I retired about 7 months ago, decided that teaching 5 days a week was too much. I fill some of my time building ham radio antennas that rarely work well, so go and build another one! (A never-ending hobby).

But GG, why don't you come with me to Myanmar next time I go (maybe next month)? Come and help to teach English at the monastery schools. I think your personality would go down well with the kids who - frankly - have little to smile about.

I am sure you recall my questioning you concerting the electrical grid there.

Unlike you, I do not enjoy that much of a challenge.

The goal is good.

The environment seems good.

But, power and communications are not goood.

I enjoy my power too much for me to reisk losing it.

The goal is very good.

In addition to the power issue, I am not a clown. I play the clown here, but I am not a clown in reality.

Still, the goal is good.

So then, you believe that Bt.3000 per hour is acceptable?

I think it a bit too steep, just for talk.

But I doubt that even Bt.1500 per hour would be tolerated for long.

I have never had any problems with internet connectivity in Myanmar, having taken precuations by 'paralleling up mobile internet and hotel wdata connections using Speedify software.

As for electricity, most hotels have generators, and when I stay in Myanmar, I also buy a 12 volt car battery and charge it up in my hotel room - then use a small 12v/220v inverter to power my laptop and lights etc if there is a power cut. Laptops use very little energy nowadays - so no problem to power it for hours and hours.

But as you say, these challenges are not for everyone :)

Yes, and it would be such a challenge to me, with my desktops.

I really require stable power supply for both AC and computers.

This does not mean that I am not still interested in living in the country.

I just feel that it might not be the best available option for me.

No real experience with this sort of occupation, but when I offer to exhibit myself to the ladies (I'm 76) I usually charge 5 Baht. If that doesn't work, I'll pay them 5 Baht.

I can already see the Google review "went to this bar and a creepy old guy kept talking to any woman who walked in the door, ladies avoid this place"

Or perhaps a reworking of Lola by the Kinks "I met him in a bar in old Chiang Mai where they drink fruit juice and it takes just like Cherry Cola, I asked him his name in a squeaky voice he said Gamma G ama ama Gamma"

We all should approach any venture exactly this way.

We would do well to keep in mind, this advice.

So you will work in a bar the that does not serve alcohol? I would assume you are here on a retirement visa. How do plan to work? What language will you be using and why would women patronize a bar that does not serve alcohol?

Does the language really matter? Gibberish is best served in a language you don't understand. Unless you are a masochist why would you pay for 30 minutes, or God forbid longer, of inanities of a failed clown.

Many years ago there was a high -so wedding in a neighbor village in surin.

Suddenly the bride family arrived to my home and invited me and my exwife to the wedding.

I had never seen them before. We went there at the afternoon and it was alot of guests there.

We get our own table and alot of food and beers and whiskey. They told me to come and stand next to the new married couple and took alot of pics.It was important for them that a foreigner was at the wedding and they asked if they could post my pics on social media.I said no problem at all.I sat with many different people on different tables.A really funny nigth with live music.

When i woke up the next morning my exwife asked me who the girls was i sat with and why they hugged me and kissed me on my forhead. To be honest i get so drunk i couldn't remember the last hours at the wedding.I couldn't even remember how we get back home.2 days after they came back and invited me to go to surin and play golf. That day it ended up with the caddies brought beer and drinks to us.Again i couldn't remember how i get back home but my exwife told me when i arrived home i had only one shoe. And the people i went with was also wasted she said.Of course the driver was sober.Funny memories.

No wonder why she is an ex wife has she moved onto greener pasture?

I'm sorry, but I just can't take this seriously.
