Has Jomtien gotten a bit scuzzy lately?

Featured Replies

I took a stroll down the beach promenade recently and was honestly quite taken aback. There seemed to be a lot more homeless people around than I remember, along with general flotsam and bits of rubbish scattered about. I even noticed people sleeping behind the police box, which didn’t give the best impression of the area.

I know seaside areas can have ups and downs, but it did feel quite different from how it used to be. Is this becoming the new norm, or did I just happen to catch it on a bad day? Curious if others have noticed the same thing recently.

And I don't mean that I'm scuzzy! 🤷

Where are homeless people supposed to go?

Out of your sight because you're King Henry the 8th and you're too important to come into contact with the downtrodden?

Did you spare a few baht?

Scuzzy. What does that even mean?

"Scuzzy" - Dirty and unpleasant.

Although I visited Jomtien last week (slept in a hotel rather than on the beach) and I thought it was pleasant and an improvement on my previous visit some years ago.

New pavements along the beach, new sand, rubbish had been cleared in the morning and a few new restaurants.

Phuket is definitely scuzzier.

I don't know, but they can't be allowed to destroy business areas or neighborhoods.

Ok, I take back my comment.

If there are too many homeless people concentrated in one area, it does negatively affect business. You are right.

spare some change if you see one.

we know how much of a miser you can be.

The lower number-Sois across from the beach are some of the worst slums I have seen Filth, rats, bums, drug addict, stink. Plus, with all the building going on the support services are lacking. They could use a mall there I think it would do ok.

Yes definitely

I think a shopping mall will be built there just a matter of time

For British people it means like Blackpool, Rhyl or Glasgow!

It's a shame, Jomtien was once a laid back, welcoming place with easy connections to Pattaya Central. Some great little gems for food and drinks no fighting, no idiot potheads on big scooters racing around, and basically felt very safe. All that changed after covid, as well as most other tourist destinations in Thailand. I would walk on the beach at 5.30am alas, haven't been able to for fear of some nutter wanting to fight. The roads are atrocious but slightly better now it's 2 way. Scuzzy..yes definitely

Dontan beach early is the walk spot, Pratumnak Soi 5 is where the <deleted> fight starts, not Jomtiem

Dontan is the gay pick up/shafting beach (or so I hear). An early morning walk sounds risky (for most)

Yes Jomtien used to have a nice quaint seaside atmosphere. But these "improvements" turning it into another #### parking lot that actually started with that area just North of the police. Also too many locals on motorbikes. And then the unnecessary drain pipe project

"Too many locals on motor bikes"!!Get off your big horse newbie, thai bashing not permitted!

Jomtien changed when the Russians took over. I will add that lots of these are unfortunate Thais who sleep out are actually those employed by the council to sweep and clean !!!

Shocked me.

people in Europe don't say that they go Pattaya, staying in Jomtien.

Nice tourist friendly beach....lol

Me too.

I visited Jomtien once in the market area and found it to be more laid-back than the beach road area in Pattaya.

I will give my perspective.

In West Palm Beach, Florida and surrounding areas, Homeless lived near the beach and at some public local parks.

I assume some reasons maybe location (places to eat, bathrooms, convenience stores close, and lastly People that give Money for survival)

I don't like to see it because I want to save the World but can't do it alone.

I always have hope that people can turn things around and figure life out.

I accept that life is Not easy sometimes and we all struggle. The last thing I would want is make someone who is struggling and make them feel bad or worse or Less Valued as a Person, still going to Show Respect and treat them the same.

To your house, of course, and the houses of people of the same ilk. Let them hang out alone with your woman, and small kids if you've got any. Homeless people are the same as you and everyone else. No mental illness or drug problems that render them untrustworthy or dangerous, no, none at all. Please let us know how it goes, and attach before and after photos of your home.
