Brits behaving very badly again!

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

I have no doubt when ASEAN Now is published on Monday, there will be yet another story involving British tourists behaving badly.

As a Brit who has lived in Thailand for many years, I have to say it’s becoming a bit embarrassing how often our nationality crops up in these stories. It seems to be happening more and more lately, and I suspect it reflects the type of tourists Thailand is attracting these days.

Two recent incidents in Pattaya are a good example.

The first involved a violent attack in a beer bar in Soi 13, where an older British bar manager was slashed in the face by a younger British man, leaving him with a serious wound that reportedly required around 30 stitches. People nearby managed to restrain one of the suspects until police arrived, although another reportedly fled the scene and was being sought by police. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Then there was another case where a British tourist decided it was a good idea to physically confront a Thai policeman inside a 7-Eleven minimart. Anyone who has lived here for a while knows that is never going to end well.

It’s the sort of behaviour that gives the rest of us a bad name. Most long-term expats respect the country and keep themselves out of trouble, but it only takes a few drunken idiots to make headlines and reinforce the stereotype.

I’m just grateful I’m no longer living in Pattaya. I remember the place well from the 90s and early 2000s, and incidents like this were relatively rare back then. These days it feels like stories like this are appearing almost daily.

Not a good look for us, unfortunately.

Nah, Thais will mostly judge you personally based on how you behave, not on your nationality.

Something must be broken… this thread is already three hours old and - shockingly - it isn’t overflowing with the usual Brit-bashers and the proud members of the Anti-Foreigner Brigade.

Normally a thread like this is a dog whistle - guaranteed to summon the bashers to deliver sweeping generalisations with the confidence of seasoned anthropologists.

And where are the visa experts? the ones who'll state that Thailand allowing 60 days instead of 30 is clearly the root cause of civilisation collapsing, because it “attracts the bad tourists”.

Also strangely absent - the anti-marijuana crusaders, who will passionately inform us that cannabis is attracting the wrong element… and in a fascinating twist of logic, apparently don’t get stoned and relax, but instead get drunk and start fights.

Surely we’re also due the classic slogan: “Good guys in, bad guys out"...

And of course, no thread would be complete without the inevitable calls for blacklisting and deportation - preferably issued with the calm, balanced judgement of someone who just finished reading the headline.

Honestly..... I’m starting to worry about the standards around here... 🫣

Huge increase in the number of tourists since then. I wonder what the stats would be when compared. Back then there was also no social media to amplify and document every single event. Is it possible that per capita sort of thing that a comparable number of events were happening but were not known.

Would be interesting to actually find out.

Everyone with a phone in their hand 24/7 has changed the capacity to document every single event that happens.

The legalisation of pot and 60 day no questions asked visas were definitely turning points in the sophistication of tourist type.

You mix that with steroid chavs plus alcohol and other drugs and it's a recipe for antisocial behaviour.

Also, people's brains went soupish after the Convid psyops & arm spears.

Every day we read about fights occurring in Pattaya. Either Ladyboys attacking someone, or motorcycle taxi drivers ganging up on some poor foreigner.
Every day. It's not a weekly happening, it's every day!
And yet, people still want to live in Pattaya? And then complain about it as if they had no idea it was so bad?

Makes no sense to me. You can get laid in Chiang Mai, Nan, Hua Hin, Kanchanaburi, or Bangkok just as easily. No need to put up with Fight-Central.

I wondered about that myself. Maybe being part of "management" presents a loophole.

There have been, and there are, plenty. Especially those that offer accommodation, and there are always loopholes.

You make some good, valid points.

But I was there with feet on the ground, and it just wasn't like that. The tourists were better; they had plenty of money and were largely well-heeled.

I even recall the first influx of Russians visiting, and likewise, they didn't understand the currency but came with fistfuls of dollars and were always to be found in high-end hotels like the Royal Cliff.

There were definitely fewer tourists, and the infrastructure wasn't crazy like it is now, but people in general were far better behaved, and you certainly didn't see tourists walking around without shirts or even shorts in the evenings; people dressed up.

Totally agree it was the place to be in the 80s and 90s

Now low quality Brit tourists ruining the place Hence the bad reputation Pattaya is getting for incidents fighing drunkiness and drugs ect

Low quality man bag , fake roadmen in their black trackis all over here for one thing . Work it out people , the weed market in the UK is a huge lucrative market. The Brits have made many Americans multi millionaires in California over the last 10 years and now many Brits are here to try and do the same. And before I get attacked by the stoner crew , I’m not saying weed is bad, I’m partial myself to a puff even in my senior years , imo alcohol is far worse….so calm down . But the legalisation of weed here has brought organised crime with it. The Chinese, Russians they all know the money that can be made shipping it to the UK, because our UK government will not legalise it . Prices in the UK for high quality weed are ridiculously high and the young Brits of today are not the drinkers the youth of the past were.

Seems to coincide with the increase in violent crime in the UK. Funny that, I can't think why.

Have you not seen the pictures of the different airports in Western cities? They have a kiosk that says leave brain here for safe keeping.
