She converted to Judaism to marry Jared Kushner, a Modern Orthodox Jew. Under traditional Jewish law (halakha), Jewish identity is passed down through the mother. If Jared had married Ivanka without her conversion, their children would not have been considered Jewish under halakha.

That was not acceptable to Kushner or his family and it's widely believed he made her conversion to Orthodox Judaism a condition of the marriage. She had to learn to read and pronounce liturgical Hebrew, i.e., the language of the Torah. That's not easy, believe me. Converts aren't required to learn the modern Hebrew spoken in Israel.
