Do you actually get out and explore Thailand ?

Featured Replies

No, I was concentrating on living. Laundry, cooking, social events etc. Now when I get back, it will be random. Me and a roller bag. Ive been thinking Chiang Mai to start. Any GoGos there?

I was waiting with my TGF at a shop for some motorbike work to get done. There was a woman sitting near us with a baby in a stroller. My girl walked up to the baby, picked her up, and started bouncing her in her arms. They were all complete strangers but it was perfectly acceptable. Try doing that in the states and expect a visit from the police within minutes (if you don't get shot first).

I know your story makes for a feel good event, but this does not occur with the people who occupy a higher social status. You can smile and say what a lovely child, but no touching. Same applies to their dogs they push around in their carriages. No touching.

Exactly. And Thais know exactly what a persons social status is just by the way they talk. And look.

So, you checked out soi dogs, 7 Eleven´s and Mom & Pop shops? I guess you missed the scenery, nature, beaches, meeting genuine Thai people and so on for ever...... Sounds like awesome travelling. 😂

You stay here long enough and the rosy glasses lose it's color.

Learn the language but don't let them know you do. You'd be amazed how much they despise you after listening to what they say when they think you don't understand.

there probably are, but you are probably the only one who goes to chiang mai for gogos.

Have traveled, and explored, plenty in the last 10 years, from the Golden Triangle to NST , from Kanchanaburi to Roi Et, next trip will be further south.

Still up and about regularly but slowing down a little bit now.

Still plenty to see and plenty of remarkable moments to remember.

Wow! Yeah, my comment was based on over 28 years in the country. I guess that´s a very personal feeling, and it has nothing to do with your fancy well known rosy glasses comment. I only come down to what value you see and put on your life. I can read that you don´t sound very happy in Thailand.

All the time, mostly in the north and need another lifetime to explore half of it.

Over the past 25+ years, we've ridden motorcycles all over Northern, Eastern, and Central Thailand. We got lost a lot, and discovered wonderful places! We love it all, but prefer to live in Chiang Mai. For us, it has all the advantages of a big city and all the charm of a small town. We live in town, but can be in the mountains surrounded by nature with just a 10-minute ride.

In my younger days during the late 1970s and early 1980s, I visited almost every province in Thailand by traveling around on local buses - 1-2 days here and there, then moving on. 13-14 years ago, drove around to visit the far north, north east and south. These days, in my early 70s with health issues I prefer to stay close to base.

Over the years seen most of Thailand, quite a few good trips during covid. Also been around neighbouring countries, certainly a lot to see in the area.

Will be 80 next year so slowing down a bit now.

I've seen a lot of Thailand, love traveling around this place, and I find that it's really enjoyable when you're traveling with a Thai partner, as the Thais tend to be quite friendly and helpful with each other. So you essentially become an insider by default.

That echoes my experience entirely- of the many places I have been to with my Thai gf I find the extreme silence of rural Isaan very appealing

You started this with your snarky comment earlier. So, give it a rest. For myself I'm content with clear water at the beach and a cold beer.

Hmmm, ok, let´s sum this up. I started what that is related to you? Let´s see below.

Ok above you have my reply to HappyExpat57, that you apparently get hook on. If so, then it must also be directly connected to you.

And above is your answer.

Above here you see my answer, as I don´t like to be called out for having rosy glasses after over 28 years in the country. What you need to understand, is that it is a personal feeling. Some people get easily bored, which means that they, after a while, don´t feel happy anywhere. Are you in that group? Is that why the comment below, telling me to give it a rest.

Ok, I guess, give it a rest, didn´t work very well. My question here, if you are so content with beach and beer, which is a very narrow way of looking at things. How come you engage at all? I actually draw the conclusion out of your reaction, that you are as bored as HappyExpat57. In my opinion only have beach and beer to look forward to every day, is not much of a life. But, as I said, it´s personal, and that is just my personal view.

Totally agree! Also, after very long time exploring the country, I cannot for my life understand when people bring it down to only a few boring things to try and make it negative. in my opinion, Thailand is a country that has all. A great variety of things to do, see and interest yourself in. People that say it´s only soi dogs, 7 Elevens and Mom & Pop shops, can´t have been outside their own block. ;-)

Or the ones who are only looking forward to the beach and the next beer. It´s extremely narrow in a country that has so much to give.

Travel is expensive and exhausting.

I'm not convinced all the travel people do is worth the effort.

And people brag about seeing every corner of the country. I'm not convinced it's worth the time and effort. Much of it probably looks the same.

Also, while going around on a motorbike might be exciting, I'll take a pass as it seems too dangerous.

Some travel is good, but I won't be heading on a motorbike to see every corner of the country any time soon.

Thai spouse and I have been to lots of different places in Thailand in the 15 years we have been here. We've made 3 trips to CM and explored that area--we went once by train and the other times by car.

We've been to at least 6 or more of the islands--and always impressed by the nice resort hotels that can be found on them.

We made a wonderful driving trip to the south of Thailand during covid--at several stops we had very few other guests at the resorts we stayed at. The roads were excellent and we had island trips and snorkeling mostly to ourselves as there were so few tourists.

I am always impressed by the different scenery. There's a lot to see.

No, that was never what I posted. When did I post that it was necessary to see every corner of the country? Do you always exaggerate this much?

You know it´s quite far from only looking at soi dogs, 7 Elevens and Mom & Pop shops or waiting for Beach and beer every day, to seeing every corner of a country. So, might be a good idea to reconsider your post, and kind of make it more in line with reality.

Guess that's relative to where one comes from, and mode of transport. But unless from a really small country, TH is pretty small itself.

USA is ~19X larger than TH (USA almost half size RU)

TH is ~2+X the size of UK. Definitely all relative.

So, in your world, that equation makes it more to see in Russia, right? Good luck!

Im not going there for GoGos, Im seeing if there are any there so I can budget accordingly. Hopefully one with TVs like in Billboard, so you can watch football

Im sure there are hundreds of guys here who have gone to CM simply for the fun unavailable in their Moo Ban.

So, with that above, your childish insinuations remind one of the stuff tossed out by a gamer on Roblox in mommys basement

Of course not, Canada is huge, but most is a giant tundra. USA is huge, but the central plains are a bit boring. Appalachians & east, Rockies & west.

TH, if O&A often, and 5-10 yrs, you've seen everything, or possible to see everything. A lot is 'same same', but still nice. We've seen a lot, but certainly not close to all. Logistically, or more just 'same same'.

Then of course when you see some spectacular landscape or village, then the others are, well, maybe, nah, just go to that other place we really liked.

People definitely need to get out of the metros & touristy areas, As there's a lot to take in. It definitely takes some planning if you don't self drive. Oh well, just my thoughts.

HAPPY TRAVELS

Yeah, I agree, that most countries have much of the same, but that´s just a fact word wide. What I was initially reacting on was people who posted that it´s just Mom & Pop shops, 7Elevens and Soi dogs. I was also reacting on people that just waiting for the next day at the beach and the beers. It´s very narrow thinking.

There are a lot to see in Thailand, and great variation too. Sure, after a while you´ve seen it, and it´s not so much urge to go look for more. But, as you say, when that sets in, then there are always places you want to re-visit. On the other, after more than 28 years, travelling a lot, I still occasionally find new places as well. One of the greatest things is if you find a place not so far away in rural Thailand, that you never saw or thought of before. As you also say, that´s my thoughts.

You really are trying too hard to justify your comment earlier. You got to let things go....sometimes. Without telling you too much about myself, let me say my favorite getaways are always beach front hotels. Been to many islands, Koh Samet being the last one and it was great. I'm currently traveling Calif, USA. Heading to Santa Monica today to see the sights. Then on to the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas.

Upon my return my bank will be crying and will only concentrate on school fees and some home remodeling.

Having the beach so close at home reminds me that I'm pretty much living the dream. I do look forward to taking my beach chair, a cooler of beer and sitting close to the surf contemplating life which I do a few times a week.

Not trying to justify anything, as I have no need to. However, you just told the world that you do more than sitting at the beach drinking beer. Good on you!
