Is that your little bunny floating away on a sea of oil? He has a cute tail. For me it's 4 a.m. over here, so that's all I could muster at the moment.

To repress animal instinct & make humanoidal drones.

PC is in itself a buzzword and a cliché originally used to score political points.

The basic objective of trying to avoid being offensive is to try to reduce friction between people.

The usage of the word PC is in itself often an attempt to discredit people who want others to be more considerate to each other.

It is true that catching somebody out with being offensive can be used as a tool to suppress that person's views though, and this side of it is usually negative.

I think it started around the burning of the bra time.

I think you may have a point.

EVERYTHING started to go South after that :o

just an elaboration here:

I do not mean to detract from "Moral Correctness" which I believe is the duty of every human soul.

But then...

With the wide variety of cultures in our ever shrinking world, how can Moral Correctness even be defined? Surely it varies widely from nation to nation, and more specifically from culture to culture?

Hence, how can Political correctness is founded upon, or based upon, moral correctness, how can it be unilaterally correct in and of itself?

Political Correctness correlates to power. If you have the "juice" you can insist on " your" definition being accepted. Bit like history really.

I wished an American a Merry Christmas recently. They replied. "Im offended, how do you know that I celebrate Christmas and do not subscribe to some other form of religious denomination?"

My response? "Frankly I don't care what time of year you call it, I wished you those pleasant greetings and it happens to be Christmas time to me, as you well know!"

The whole matter was made worse by the fact that he was a Christian.

The objective of PC? I can understand that some people do not want to be offensive to anyone, but some people just take things too far.

As to who is responsible, I personally blame it all on the Mary Whitehouse brigade who have obviously had not enough

PS thought this was rather topical

'Twas The (Politically Correct)

Night Before Christmas:

'Twas the night before Christmas and Santa's a wreck...

How to live in a world that's politically correct?

His workers no longer would answer to "Elves".

"Vertically Challenged" they were calling themselves.

And labor conditions at the north pole

Were alleged by the union to stifle the soul.

Four reindeer had vanished, without much propriety,

Released to the wilds by the Humane Society.

And equal employment had made it quite clear

That Santa had better not use just reindeer.

So Dancer and Donner, Comet and Cupid,

Were replaced with 4 pigs, and you know that looked stupid!

The runners had been removed from his sleigh;

The ruts were termed dangerous by the E.P.A.

And people had started to call for the cops

When they heard sled noises on their roof-tops.

Second-hand smoke from his pipe had his workers quite frightened.

His fur trimmed red suit was called "Unenlightened."

And to show you the strangeness of life's ebbs and flows,

Rudolf was suing over unauthorized use of his nose

And had gone on Geraldo, in front of the nation,

Demanding millions in over-due compensation.

So, half of the reindeer were gone; and his wife,

Who suddenly said she'd enough of this life,

Joined a self-help group, packed, and left in a whiz,

Demanding from now on her title was Ms.

And as for the gifts, why, he'd ne'er had a notion

That making a choice could cause so much commotion.

Nothing of leather, nothing of fur,

Which meant nothing for him. And nothing for her.

Nothing that might be construed to pollute.

Nothing to aim. Nothing to shoot.

Nothing that clamored or made lots of noise.

Nothing for just girls. Or just for the boys.

Nothing that claimed to be gender specific.

Nothing that's warlike or non-pacific.

No candy or sweets...they were bad for the tooth.

Nothing that seemed to embellish a truth.

And fairy tales, while not yet forbidden,

Were like Ken and Barbie, better off hidden.

For they raised the hackles of those psychological

Who claimed the only good gift was one ecological.

No baseball, no football...someone could get hurt;

Besides, playing sports exposed kids to dirt.

Dolls were said to be sexist, and should be passe;

And Nintendo would rot your entire brain away.

So Santa just stood there, disheveled, perplexed;

He just could not figure out what to do next.

He tried to be merry, tried to be gay,

you've got to be careful with that word today.

His sack was quite empty, limp to the ground;

Nothing fully acceptable was to be found.

Something special was needed, a gift that he might

Give to all without angering the left or the right.

A gift that would satisfy, with no indecision,

Each group of people, every religion;

Every ethnicity, every hue,

Everyone, everywhere...even you.

So here is that gift, it's price beyond worth...

"May you and your loved ones enjoy peace on earth."

I don't know how many people remember when political correctness was supposed to be a compliment. The super-liberals would tell you, "that is not politically correct" if you said something that they did not agree with. I was living in San Francisco and my sister was a want-to-be lesbian at this time.

I am positive that I was one of the first people to make fun of the whole concept! :o

That is an EXCELLENT Poem! Thanks Quiksilva :o

Why should we all bite our tongues for the fear of offending others?

People I care about, want to do business with or just want to be near - politeness suffices.

then there are.....

People that have annoyed me, or I just don't like. Why should I be PC to them or in front of them?

He was really taking things way too far, yes.

Why should we all bite our tongues for the fear of offending others?

Well, that's a very general question. The interesting thing in my opinion is what should be deemed offensive and not - and who decides?

People I care about, want to do business with or just want to be near - politeness suffices.

What is the difference between 'polite' and 'not offensive'? It's not a rhetorical question, I'd like to know what you think - I am not sure that to me, the difference is that great?

People that have annoyed me, or I just don't like. Why should I be PC to them or in front of them?

Well, I am not sure what kind of scenarios you are thinking of here?

I can think of several where for example, the use of racial or sexist slurs aren't called for. Isn't it possible to get back at somebody without resorting to stereotyping, which includes other people that have not directly annoyed you?

When it comes to something like wishing Merry Christmas, then things look ridiculous, but let's get back to basics first I think:

Where are the borders for the acceptable? Who defines them?

Where are the borders for the acceptable? Who defines them?

Well despite previous (tic? :o ) posts on the subject, this question is worthy of some serious thought.

What is PC, polite, just not offensive, un-couth, down right rude or abusive for me may not be the same thing for another person.

I don't take offense that easily, but might take offense at something somebody else would let slip by.

Indeed - who defines what is PC?

Who defines what is abusive, derogatory or rascist?

I am one that does not like to be at the mercy of decisions of others. Why should I conform to, what I think are, in some cases, stupid & meaningless "restraintes placed on one's tongue"?

If I want to call somebody a fugly mother ducker, given that I hold no recriminations on the PC front for somebody calling me that, why should some faceless regulatory body made up of 87 year old virgin nuns be able to prosecute me for this action?

All in all - PC - anybody who values personal freedom's worst nightmare

Sorry, rambling & waffling again. :D

I am inclined to agree with meadish

PC has become more like a tool to shut-up an opponent.

as well as opposite - nowdays it seems like to accuse someone in PC has the same goal and effect.

it is like when my wife doesn't like something what I say - she would say I talk too much or similar accusation. :o

I'm very PC.

shut the <deleted> up, you scaley old git :o

Caveat:- no offence intended :D

I speak my mind and if someone doesn't like it then bugger them,

But i am always polite, but can go for the jugular if needed be. and also cover up for friends who are too frighted to speak for themselves.

VOILA

I got a sweet face and smile and when someone gets at me i attack - its called looking after number one

:o Patsy you sound suspiciously like a well known TV member called Boo

In the beginning... I thought PC was kind of okay but now I believe it's OTT. Like I said in another thread recently, people at my work - a centre for disabled persons - some PC brigade were debating whether or not we should call the window blinds 'blinds' as we have blind people working in the building. The suggestion was 'window covers'

Good to see you seonai! Looking bright and pink these days!

:D

That's pretty funny, but sadly, all too believeable. Wait ill the venetians figure out they can claim "emotional damges" money...

I think the borders of what is acceptably PC lie somewhere in the region where common sense prevails.

Let's take it a step beyond

Which nationality is MOST PC?

Which nationalty is LEAST PC?

Have at it!

I remember UG :D

I was attending UC Santa Cruz in the late 80's till the early 90's.

PC was in it's infancy then and I remember many heated arguments

regarding "being PC" vs. "not being PC".

I was definitely in the minority there :o

See my signature - I 100% agree wuth what Geldof said in this song (and most of what he said in other songs...).

The PC brigade can go get stuffed...luckily there are not many of them around in Pattaya, one of the upsides of living here!
