Australian Aged Pension

The old age pension is taxable, but if it's your only source of income, you won't pay any tax.

Are you stating the old age pension is not taxable if it is your only source of income, even if you are living overseas full time, with no domicile in Australia, and no intention of returning to Australia?

We're talking about residents for tax purposes.

Why is that relevant when most members on this thread are living in Thailand?

I wonder how happy Jim, and struggling pensioners in Australia would be, knowing pensioners living overseas in more affordable countries are benefiting for rises in the pension and cost of living relief?

It seems to me, finally being able to collect non resident tax from expats would be an easy sell back there at the moment.

Because I assume most of the people on this forum who are living in Thailand, have declared themselves as non-residents.

Like yourself.

Somehow, I don't think Jim would be giving pensioners living overseas a second thought, but carry on.

'Can't help himself'.

No argument here!

At least John Gleese says this is my first time, not a recorded 418, which excludes adjustments.

What planet are you on?

I want to be a resident of Australia for tax purposes, and I suggest, so do the majority of Aussie expat retirees.

Have you learnt nothing?

If you are deemed to be a non resident for tax purposes, there's no tax free threshold and the rate is 32.5% from $0 to $120,000.  Links already provided.

Most, including myself, want to remain a tax resident of Australia so we can get the tax free threshold and resident tax rates.

Jim, as well as the previous government, has been giving thought to ALL expats that have escaped paying non resident tax for decades, and why wouldn't he / they?  We have all been avoiding this tax for years.

Carry on.

Off topic.  Baiting.  Argumentative.

Not reported.

Posts reported and removed along with replies.  Argumentative, baiting and bickering is going to earn suspensions.   Keep it civil.

Pensioners I know in Australia are envious of my better standard of living, I can't recollect any saying I should pay more tax. You seem to be fairly unique in wishfully thinking we should.

IIRC it was Churchill who said capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings, socialism is the equal allocation of misery.

If we have the gumption to uproot ourselves in search of a better life, please explain why we should be penalized for it.

Do you pay non-resident tax of 31.5% on your self-funded pension?

You obviously know it was a slip of the tongue/pen and I meant resident tax.

Why on earth would I mean non-resident.

But you continue to derail the thread.

As suggested earlier, why don't you start your own thread so can you argue with yourself.

It still has to be included in your tax return if you lodge one.

My accountant puts in a tax return for me every year so I don't get fined.  There is nothing much on it and he doesn't charge me much.  I don't stay in Australia more than half the year but resident or not a resident I have never heard anything from the tax office while I have been living here.

What you describe has been working well for thousands of Aussie expats, for decades, and I am one of them also.  You derive an income in Australia, but live overseas.  The government has been missing out on taxing us at non-resident rates.  This is the reason the proposed changes were drafted.

A bickering post as well as a Re-hash of the same information posted by one poster over and over again which is becoming argumentative has been removed.  You have continued to post the same information over and over, please cease and desist.  It is becoming nothing more than an argument between the one poster and other posters now.

Just received my Proof Of Life letter from Centrelink. It was dated (written) 13/4/23 and posted on the 02/6/23 and received today, 12/7/23. It was supposed to be returned to Centrelink by today, otherwise pension could be stopped, so had to ring them and get an extension to the 31st October. Why the hell has it taken so long to get here?

When I get the form completed I'll send it back by some kind of express post. They said it can be faxed, but who has a fax machine anymore?

Some hotels will send fax for outside persons. Did this before, hotel initially refused and wouldn't discuss, then I offered 200Baht to reception manager, fax sent 1 minute later.

I had to do this letter for OZ DVA six months ago. Concernd about the return date I called DVA, got transferred quickly to correct section, DVA lady quickly said e.mail is fine.

Sent it by e.mail, 2 days later an e.mail from DVA  confirming they had received my scanned proof of life form and confirmied it was accepted.

So maybe (repeat maybe) C'link will accept by e.mail, perhaps call then on the toll fee number to check, and if OK get a specific e.mail address.

Can you "fax" from your computer, have a vague recollection that it is/was possible.

Why was it not duplicated in your online inbox? As Robodebt has shown, Centrelink needs reforms.

I asked the person I spoke to specifically about email and he said they don't use email.

No email advising me of anything, in fact the C'link operator said that they don't use emails.

No idea, but you do need a phone line.

Makes one wonder when Centrelink will move into this century with their systems. Snail mail is increasingly infrequent and unreliable.

I had to do a Proof of Life for my work pension, I converted it to a PDF file and emailed it. So easy.

You have reminded me that DVA says they have started testing a new very secure e.mail system.

If it passes the 'tests' maybe it will be used acrosss other departments.

Wait and see.

Go to Google and type in " send fax from computer."
