As Awesome as the rest of the guys out there. He didn't have to go so I give him credit for going & "doing his bit" just like the rest of the lads in his regiment.

Whilst he's no better than the other squaddies out there, its great to see a Royal on the front line, makes a change for them to get their hands dirty.

No more awesome than the thousands of others who have served here over the past few years. I think he has shown a good attitude about the whole thing though (about just being "one of the lads" and wanting to come back, not expecting or receiving any special treatment, etc).

Too bad someone had to leak the story, most likely to try and score a little extra publicity for their site. :o

Put a lot of people in danger needlessly.

FYI It was an Ozzie Ladies mag "New Idea" that spoiled the party and senselessly put people's lives at risk on January 7th, but hardly anyone noticed (say alot for that rag) then Matt Drudge an internet journalist found it later and used it to promote his site.

He's only a bloody Rupert - so long as he kept out of the way and let the boys get on with their job, no probs.

What's a Rupert :o

Personally i don't think he's any braver than any of the other troops out there. However, the Ghurka's and other lads surrounding him deserve credit as once his identity and approx location was found out i'm sure the Taleban would have wanted to make him a number one target.

What's a Rupert :o

A young junior officer who has to be led by the hand by the far more experienced sergeants (who do all the real work) :D

Cheers Humph. Not heard that expression before :D

Any time, any time.

To answer your question, Seonai, "No, I don't"

His uncle, Prince Andrew served in conflict (The Falklands War) as a helicopter pilot, so he's hardly the first British Royal in recent history to do so.

It is also questionable whether his presence would have put his unit at (undue) risk.

Also, why the h3ll couldn't he get a proper squaddie haircut?

It's an orchestrated stunt with absolutely no risk to his person.

Pathetic if you ask me

What? Bit harsh on the guy there pampal.

The guy is in the Army and he wanted to go. I think he even threatened to resign if he couldn't go.

He didn't have to go.

He walked the streets, IEDs have respect for nobody.

His excuses for not going were already made.

So for that I give him respect, do I give him more respect than the other guys on the ground, no, but respect nonetheless.

I haven't caught up much of this story, but I have heard that he was in a squad of Gurkha's, don't know if that s right, but if it is, being in the Company of the finest Regiment in the world today or in recent history, will teach him more than Sandhurst can throw at him.

Interesting points.

His brother was indeed third seat in a chopper during the Falklands. However, his was the only chopper with a third seat !! ( nothing said about his courage, just that he was turned down by the RAF on his abilities, the Navy was more welcoming..........).

Haircuts and shaves on active service in the Middle East are not the best of ideas, risk of infection.

"Ruperts" have their uses. Ask the Scots Guards who were pinned down by US trained Marines on Tumbledown. One rather fed up Rupert, got up under fire, said I've had enough of this...the rest is history. In addition, the rather well liked Argentine who ran the Stanley Post Office amazed the locals when seen in Brit Uniform happily chatting to his other Rupert mates from a rather famous UK Special Forces Regiment, after the war was over.

Our jolly Nepalese pals are indeed great individual soldiers. However, they are still plagued by the caste system which is their hidden burdon and sadly these days, have a tendency for crime. On their last tour in HK, the Regiment closed ranks over a Captain who was blown up by a granade thrown through his window when he insisted on carrying out investigations into a gold smuggling syndicate, the list of suspects were suddenly spirited away. That said, lucky boy to have no doubt the best of them watching his back during his tour.

Bullets, bombs. IED's and the like have no respect for Blue Blood and would not recognize a " publicity stunt " if they saw one. Respect for all serving in horrific conditions should be freely given, regardless of politics. The lads out their are doing their duty. They may not agree with the deployment, but they will give their lives for their pals and the flag they serve.

Hats off to the young man.

Good post Suiging :o

And for the record anyone who goes out there to fight is awsome but my question was about this one guy :D

I agree!

Whoa there, is there agreement in part at least to the Gurkha's being a caste ridden, stealing, bunch of murdering ne'er-do-wells, or is there not a British soldier who has spirited away booty, killed an officer, allegedly, or shown racism against their own fellow combatants. I think not.

A poor attempt at discrediting a fine fighting force, desperately under valued and paid, simply because the Gov't can.

Moss

Not at all mate.

A simple observation from someone who worked with them ( invited to and enjoyed visits to their at that time two major recruiting stations) and then sadly in another capacity had to dig a little deeper into their make-up

Never have and never will discount their fantastic record in the field, but pardon the pun everything in the garden is not that rosey.

On topic, every one in the field working with the prince no matter what colour or creed is a hero.

I think it did a lot for British morale that Harry went and showed that he really really wanted to do it just like the other guys. And it was a brilliant cover up job, wonder if any memeber of the press actually knew?

wonder if any memeber of the press actually knew?

Yes they did Seonai. There was actually a press conference before he went and they all agreed to the news blackout on it. Probably in return for some exclusive stories later on.

In the good old days there was such a thing as a "D notice". Print it....go to jail...Ahhh the good old days.

Actually there was a big write up on MSN in Australia before he went with many reader's comments about why/why not he should/shouldn't go and also a section on a morning show. That was months ago too.Last was that the security risk was too high and he was not going.

I haven't kept up with the latest info and I have no opinion. There shouldn't be any discrimination just because he is a royal, many soldiers have lost their lives in the name of duty.He is young and gung ho and so are many others.War and death is not selective. Why should he get special treatment anyway?

Sorry for being pedantic but I do believe you misspoke here, Andrew is Harry's uncle, not brother.

I wouldn't descibe the guy as awesome:

Although he displayed courage in going to the war zone, I believe it exposed his comrades to more danger than they would normally expect.

The Taliban have stated they knew he was in Afganistan and were hunting him.

I can't believe I missed that, or was I too pedantic to have not mentioned it, nope, I missed it :o

These are the reasons why I like him. He's a normal 'rebel' which all young men should be at some stage in their youth! He's better than his brother ad future king, the dweeble!

OK if we're being pedantic..........................Half-brother.

Sop Press:

The true reason for his withdrawl. :o

The Teletubbies suspected he was involved in this Patrol !!!
