Myself, the nick is very easy, living in Kanchanaburi and me first three letters in me passport are Win.

Was thinking years ago when I signed up on ThaiVisaDotCom of using “U Kan Win”, but then that would have been ‘too much in the face’ so to speak for most posters, so I decided on Win Kan, no that does knot have the right ring tone for me, but Kan Win sounded great. I also use this many times in me posts as well, like ‘I can win’ or ‘no I can not win’ etc..

Call meself 'The Colonel' on udder forums just to get their goats up, as folks think that I resemble 'Colonel Sanders' without the goatee. :o

So now you know :D and

Yours truly,

Kan Win :D

With much of the TV web site being open to Google searches I do not believe it is in anyone's positive interest to reveal facts that might be used by persons unknown at some future time. In Thailand anyone that is more than just a tourist will have had various documents copied and passed on to near endless departments and offices each one could be used to build a profile to aid theft.

Like meeting a person in a bar at random, you do not need to know all their personal details to enjoy a few drinks and 'intelligent' debate. Talking over a period of time allow people to choose who might be a closer friend than others.

You don't introduce yourself by your real name?

....but in these enlightened networking days of so called Web 2.0 doesn't it make more sense to declare one's identity
I would have thought the reverse to be true now, with the awarenss of identity theft it's so easy to copy another's name on another forum and pretend to be another person for whatever objective.

Good point, well presented! However, there is the "Web 2.0" viewpoint of each person being a brand and using networks, social bookmarks, backlinks et al to promote that brand, a pseudonym could be self-defeating in that scenario.

I'm still not clear how using a real name is opening the door to identity theft, unless you post your PIN, mother's maiden name and the name of your first pet.

I use this forum to exchange information and also for banter. ...got nothing to hide, whatever I say on this board I would also say face to face.

raro is the abbrivation of my real name and same as for Junior Expat, lots of people in Pattaya know me under both names.

A psychological examination of nicks such as weekendwarrior is for sure more revealing :D

I'd just like to be clear, nobody calls me JxP in the real world! :D

Examination of nicknames on TV could lead to some disturbing conclusions/assumptions, let's see who's online right now:

dr_Pat_Pong :o

currypuff

Birdman

TV Channel 11

squashjunkie

ThePinkPossy

plasticpig

and my personal favourite - ThunderDuck

You would Suegha!

I would, I would, I weally would! :D:o

I used to introduce myself as daleyboy for awhile, but got tired of getting slapped in the face all the time. Then I tried introducing myself as britmaveric, but everyone kept asking me when I was going to be dancing at Jenny's again.

Now I usually introduce myself as "ATM", but the girls get a perplexed look on their faces when I tell them I'm from Petchabun (because they all know that there aren't any walking ATMs in Petchabun, at least not single ones). :o

Living dangerously here :o, I'll say I met the eponymous Jenny who worked at the Simon's Cabaret which was the one on walking Street. Her, I think, German boy friend, it's a long time ago {@ 10 years}, subsequently helped her set up the bar. I wonder where she is now?

Regards

My real name is Chris P. Bacon but I didn't want you all laughing at me, so I changed it to Doug Graves, only to discover that there is someone actually called that, then thought about Michael Hunt (Too Blue) then Helen Hunt but really didn't fancy changing sex.

Robin Banks & Ben Dover have both been done to death, my mother's maiden name of Gascoigne would only cause me to be called "Bob" by more senior Brits.

Toyed with Ivor Carr for a while but that's not really true as I onlyhave a Dream. So finally decided to go with what the locals call me here, which I have kind of grown into as Ken is not my real name.

P.S. My given name is far too difficult to pronounce for the average Thai - So Uncle Ken it is

I would have expected Bamber... :o

Reminds me of the old joke. Who and green pubic hair and an IQ of 180?

Bamber Grassgroin!

I know it's a groaner...

Island mistress perhaps :D

now we're talking........... :o

See sbk, it's not just me - it's raro too. He's obviously got taste as well! :D

From what I've seen/experienced of Internet-based harassment and stalking even of personas, and then sometimes of real-life persons, from Thai-based webboards, I'd strongly recommend that no one reveal any personally-identifying information about themselves on them- furthermore, I'd recommend abandoning any website where the owners/mods do not defend your right to privacy/ not to be stalked, etc. So far this is the only Thai-related one I've found that does so fairly consistently.

Concur completely.

I was given my nic by a now ex-girlfriend way before I ever joined any internet forum and it was only used privately between the two of us and, for me, seamed to be the best choice when I started to sign up to these things. Plus it's so rare that it is seldom already taken, in fact, I can't think of a single time when I have been asked to 'try again'

A few people in here know my Christian name, but apart from the banks I use, no one knows my family name, well, there is one chap on a different forum, but he has been my best friend for over twenty years, he's a barrister and has my power of attorney, trying to phish him for info would be like getting blood out of a stone.

One of my ex-pat mates here, young lad, only 35 and a total computer newbie, was proudly showing me his Facebook entry the other week, his life was an open book for all to see, including pictures of his twin baby boys...... he couldn't understand why I was screaming "Nooooo......"

this is actually an aspect that amazes me...in the good old days, a diary was something to write in total privacy, the books came with a padlock and were hidden under the bed.

Nowadays you publish your diaries, family pictures and so on all over the internet to the all and sundry. Incomprehensible to me! Having said that, I am also with lots of details on LinkedIn - still wondering what the benefit of doing so really is. I think I'll start another thread about this...

These are the same people who scream for tough privacy laws...
