Hello All

The missus has spotted a nicely maintained camper van and is piling on the pressure for us to get one.

Does anyone know anything about the prices of these things, or where I could buy a bit of a run down one and restore it?

Are there any back street garages who have plenty knocking around, or have they become a but of a rare article.

Any suggestions on where I could get to look at some - anywhere near Sukhothai would be great, but basically anywhere in northern or even the whole of Thailand.

Can anyone recommend any magazines or websites for Thailand that would list the price of these things.

Anyone know how much I could pick up one for up for that requires work, or alternatively how much would I be paying for a nicely done up one?

Had a quick shufty at thaivwclub.com, but in thai, so will need to get the missus to translate.

Cheers

The VW Microbus is one of the world's favourites for a 'camper' conversion for many good reasons (don't touch the later Transporter model which is smaller and under-powered).

Vehicles already converted are rare to find, especially the ones with the 'fold up' roofs, as many are being made into mobile bars and food stalls in Thailand now. Best find a good basic 'standard' van or 'bus to start on. I saw one very recently in Chiang Mai on www.autonostalgia.info (in English) at what seemed a decent price. Happy hunting!

I have owned a 67 Camper van in Europe for a few years, never had any problems, the only problem was the canvas on the roof, constant lifting up the roof + the hot sunshine in South of France/Spain/Portugal..

Re the Transporter have driven them, many 1,000's of km, the only real problem was the gearbox but then at least 3x per week I was towing a twin axle fully loaded trailer... [would trade them at 150,000km, same engine but the 3 different ones I had, all were on the 3rd rebuilt gearbox.

I bought the Audi because of the condition, really wanted a Saab 900 Viggan or the Volvo 850 GLT, the only ones I could find in perfect condition were green, I hate green.. and it is not used much as the main vehicle is a 2008 D-Max..... [the steering is odd the 2006 one was better, but overall the Gold Seris is better that the last 2]

Really it come down to what is the vehicle for? Price your looking to pay ? how long you are thinking of keeping it?

Remember here most of the vans/buses were used as Tour mini busses..

The VW Caravelle were in much better condition, and even the older ones 1994 look up-to-date, from 240,000 baht up, not sure if you will find a diesel,

Mitsubishi Space Wagon/Star around the same price but much lower km.

For the same price you can get a 2002/3 in perfect condition Kai Pregio.

You may want to put on your shopping/to look at list. Mercedes Benz ‘M’ class, there 2.9 diesel a 1998/9 is around 300,000 baht in top condition.

Re Pickups, I can give you the price of every part on all the pickups here… Really it comes down to how long you’re going to keep it ? The cheapest to run and hold a VERY high resale value is Isuzu.. Only Isuzu engines are chain driven, so a little noisier than the others [no problem of belts breaking]

If you want second hand and are going to keep it for years then the same engine pickup at a much cheaper price is the Chevy Colorado.

Ford/Mazda and Toyota are the most expensive for parts and service items. Ford/Mazda do not hold there value here, so a good buy second hand if you’re going to keep it a long time, warning be sure to change the timing belt every 80,000km..

after a lot of consideration ive almost convinced my self i need 2 vehicles, a pick up for day to day and a camper for my long weekends

i had a look at the M series, real nice!

how old is your A6?

my main criteria are;

sleep in it in comfort, strong engine, not too complicated to repair/get repaired.

im hoping to spend around 200, but could go more for something nice lookin with extras.

isuzu do do a diesel camper but as far as ive seen there not a popular vehicle here.

have you looked into importing a vehicle from say, europe? i know germany has fairly priced relaible vehics, but ive heard getting the paperwork done here could be excruciating.

Ohhh, the considerations......
