or 08448612121 which will transfer you to a cheap rate line. 1P per minute, although it is more expensive from a mobile because the service provider will charge a premium.

If you do some research on the internet you can find several companies that give pre-dial numbers for very good rates. No extra fees, contracts etc. Most of them you can use from any land-line (but check that your telephone line provider isn't going to add charges).

One example is Telediscount at 2p per minute.

When I was in the UK I used one at a 1.5p per minute rate but, after a while the quality of the connection started to deteriorate so I switched to another.

I'm not an expert, but I think the quality of the connection deteriorates as more callers use the service.

Similar pre-dials are available here in Thailand. We use 009 for cheaper calls to UK - if anyone knows a better one, post here, please.

reason for edit: politeness (forgot to say please)

Just download voipcheap from internet (google to find) You pay a credit of say £10 and keep using till all gone.

Free to call landline and 1p min for mobile. Sms are 3p each.

I have been using for more than a year now, no problems but of course must have computer.

There is also a facility to call back to your phone and connect to thai phone so you can talk away from computer, 2p min.

Also all calls free if the other person also has voipcheap installed on pc.

Hope this helps, I find it is cheaper than skype amd simple to use, also mostly cheaper than dialling pre-contact numbers .

Voipcheap must have changed its pricing plan since the last time you looked at their website. Current rates to Thailand:

Landline: EUR 0.01 per minute

Mobile: EUR 0.01 per minute

SMS: EUR 0.03

I use noble dot com from the USA. It is your basic pre paid phone card. I found their rates very competitive, and they don't have any monthly fees or expiration dates.

Other than that, I use msn messenger or yahoo messenger when just routine chatting and use the audio or video chat feature. Depending on how your Thai counterpart gets to the internet, that can be the best, especially since each is by itself free.

This is interesting, what's the deal with the 009 prefix ? Do you need to set it up and does it work for all telephone companies ?

How much does it cost per minute for calls to UK landlines, anyone got any more information on this ?
