To answer the first part of your question, yes, the borders are still open. A friend of mine did a border run to Chom Chom a couple of days ago to renew his 90-day multiple entry visa. There are many Thai's using the casinos on the Cambodian side of the border on a daily basis. The Cambodians cannot afford to lose the trade. Business as usual.

The road from Chom Chong to Siem Rep is quite good most of the year, but probably partially flooded following the heavy rain season in issan. 4-5 hours plus in a taxi. I have a freind in Prasat who tells me that the border is open at the mo. But flooding will be a problem for overland travel.

Ayna / Poipet is open, but the road is even worse than Chong Chom so will probably take 5 plus hours.

Best to fly from Bangkok to Siem Rep this time of year if possible. Doesn't cost much more and much less stressful than the overland haul.

As for the current dispute, a Farang would be unlikely to run into polictical tension unless they are travelling with Thai(s)

And no-body asked the question " Where are you travelling from?"

If you are coming from Ubon, then Sisaket/Chong Sa Ngam/Anglong Veng is the best bet, and the best road. From other parts of Eastern Isaan, then Surin/Chong Chom/Osmach is simple. Travelling from BKK or Pattaya then Aranyuapatet/Poipet is best.

It's not possible to drive into Cambodia with a Thai vehicle at Koh Kong, I tried a few months ago, Poipet is probably the same.

John....

depends how you intend to travel on on the other side, poi pet is the closest ( to siam reap ) but by far the fastest with the most polite staff is ban laem. i came out ( on a bike ) on thursday, peice of cake, almost no beggars,.15 minutes to get across, i HATE poi pet with a passion, however the road on he other side to battambang from ban laem is very bumpy, all borders are open and we did 900kms travelling around remote areas with no problems,.
