Fish And Chips, Where Is The Good Stuff?

I had the 100B special in the Soi Lengkee branch last night as I happened to be there and the place I intended going to was closed.

The portion was a fair size for the price, and the fish was perfectly OK for tropical fish. The surroundings and service were good.

But the chips were a disappointment, though I'm not sure if it was because of the variety of potato or the way they were cooked, or both. I've had chips in other places around there that were better. So maybe mushy peas is the way to go.

I will try the Jomtien branch at some point.

I treated myself to Icelantic Cod Fish Fingers from Tops Central for homecooking. Cost about 400 baht for 6 ( very big pieces) but are absoluteley delicious and beat any Fish and Chips meal you get in town. Snow white and flakey inside, yummy! Like with so many things in this town, home cooking is the answer!

Imported frozen cod and frozen chips are probably going to beat the locally produced version every time. My local Tops daily has packets of frozen chips for 99B that look quite tempting.

But even so the Chinese ought to be able to grow decent spuds for chips: they have the climate.

.

"Can you tell us where in Jomtien is the new JF restaurant?"

It's a bit off the beaten path -- If you're coming from Pattaya, the road to the beach turns right at the Hanuman Statue - If you go all the way to where the road meets the beach road, you've gone a bit too far.

Before the beach, there's a large open-air bar on the right side of the road called Country-Roads -- there's a short walking Soi to the left of the bar. Walk back there a short distance where it meets another walking Soi - turn left and Jolly Friar is a short walk down toward the beach on the right.

.

Thanks for the directions, i'll give it a try, and hope it's a lot better than Simon's fish bar.

The Chinese do grow very good potatoes in the north. About fish and chips in Pattaya-Jomtien, I mentioned a place earlier but have to know reverse what I said (will not say the name). I will say, after eating and several places, the fish and chips at Goose's is #1.

Indeed, but I wonder why they dont seem to make it this far? Other fresh produce comes here from China.

Never tried that place, but I will.

Chinese chips do make it this far. Makro sell "Holland Potatoes" and the boxes are covered in green Chinese writing. Make a good mashed potato and jacket. I use Makro frozen chips because I need consistent results (I am not in Pattaya and have a much smaller customer base).

I would also re-iterate my earlier vote for Goose's. I have not found better quality in Pattaya.

Yes Goose's is #1, mainly for their fresh cut chips which unbelievably no other chippy's want to do. I wish Goose's had a larger/thicker fish portion, I'd gladly pay the difference.

But as far as I know for chips you need a different sort of potato, though they grow the same way. I certainly used to buy different varieties for different uses back in Europe. I wonder where the supply chain goes wrong with those?

I understand the convenience of frozen chips for small businesses, and in fact I would prefer good frozen chips to bad fresh ones.

I have not found better quality Fish & Chips anywhere in SEA. When I am in Pattaya I always hit there and Cherries restaurant.

Goose fish (the one from Vietnam) not that good. The chips was good though. Best fish and chips in asia: Shanghai club/bar in Phnom Phen. The fish portion is huge and the fish was perfect. I think it cost 7 dollars.

ok, i have finally tried Gooses now so i can say with some confidence that i have eaten from the main contenders in Pattaya

so heres what i think about Gooses

Cod fillet was very good, nice light batter, good sized portion & likely the best i have had in Pattaya

chips were ok but small portions (i counted x20 thin cut chips) and were slightly hard and i felt were underdone

mushy peas ; small portion not exceptional taste , a little on the dry side

battered sausage; small size not jumbo, pretty uninspiring

after all the hype on here, frankly i was dissapointed with Gooses,

in my opinion, for the best fish & chip & extras supper in Pattaya you might need to shop around to gather together a top meal:

cod -gooses

dory-jolly friar

chips-jolly friar for fat chip lovers and quantity/gooses if they offered a bigger portion and cooked them slightly longer

mushy peas-lakeside chippy

fish cake -village chippy

battered jumbo sausage-jolly friar

best value-jolly friar, dory & chips 100 baht

overall i am still a fan of Jolly Friar

I am not discounting your opinion of Goose's, but in Thailand, IMO one visit is not enough. I do not know of any restaurant in Thailand that is totally consistent about making Western food well.

Did you try the dory at Gooses? That is all I eat there because it is so good and the cheapest fish on the menu. I agree that it is not cheap and that the portions are not very big, but to me, the excellent quality more than makes up for it. It is the only place in South East Asia that I have had fish and chips that were as good as a decent place back home. wai.gif

I'm not sure what "Goose fish from Vietnam" has to do with Goose's Fish and Chips in Pattaya.

I suspect that he meant "the fish from Vietnam that Goose's sell". Possibly frozen farmed tilapia or similar.

i did not try the dory

i always have cod as first choice

that way i can compare like for like at different places

i mean if you can't get the most expensive menu item right then is it worth a second try?

if i go again maybe i will try dory and compare with other dory offerings i have had in other places

as to being like home, it depends where you call home

i am from the Uk, where it all started and theres nowhere around here that comes close

to qualify that, i have eaten F & C at this years 2012 chippy of the year, Seniors and at the 2nd and 3rd placed finalists

also at the Cottage, a 5* fish and chip shop in an independant guide to chippys and recomended by the TV seafood specialist chef Rick Stein

so whilst i am not a F & C expert, i can claim to have eaten at some of the best that the UK can offer, which might just give me an edge in the taste stakes

whereas you might be used to Arthur Treachers and think its good........

I don't. I have had great fish and chips in San Francisco and a number of places in Australia, but never in England.

i am thinking you answered that in a purposely ambiguous manner, so lets get to it

either you have never had great fish & chips in England or you have never been to England

which is it?

Actually, not on purpose at all. I have never been to England, but I'm sure that excellent fish and chips are available there. .

A further post discussing English chippies has been removed, if the previous post was not clear enough then I will spell it out. Stay on Topic please .

As this is the Pattaya forum this is the area we are talking about.

thanks to this thread we went to Jolly Friar last night. Excellent F&C meals of dory & fries and halibut & the chunky chips and great value.. Tasty garden peas too. Very busy, no delays and good polite service. Recommended.
