I've never understood that phrase .... as somber as a judge, maybe, it's probably one of the first ever typo's.

I suppose "as drunk as a Lord" would be more easily understood.... and probably more fitting.

no, really...a typical stentorian pronouncement usually goes like:

judge: 'you are a drunken reprobate...'

tutsi: 'say, judge...why don't you lighten up; let's have a drink and talk about it...'

fortunately, tutsi never had to do time for his antics; usually a fine and on my way...bein' a brilliant engineer an' all...

somber and sober are interchangeable adjectives, anyway...

I was working for some people who were renovating the local courthouse once and backed my truck into the side the senior judge's car. It was totally unobserved so I fled the scene of the crime. The resulting investigation would have put the Madeleine McCann case to shame.

I often wondered if the judge would have excused himself from the case if my crime had come to light or taken savage personal vengeance upon me.

OK, young man.

My 50th was celebrated in the Swedish Consulate in Benghazi, where I was living at the time. Very fortunate, as we could break out some of the real booze that came in the diplomatic pouch,Libya being dry at the time.

50 is a very special birthday in Scandinavia - reaching maturity and all that. I think it was something about being able to get out of the longships, give up the rape and pillage, settle down to a quiet life at home with the mother-in-law. Or so I was led to believe.
