New Bridge Getting Close To Completion

I enjoy going out there to see how it's progressing. Went there a few days ago with my young son. Am pretty sure we could have walked across, but turned back for other reasons.

It looks to me like the design was overdone. I realize that much of the effort and expense is for impressing. Even so, the bridge could have been done safely for half the materials and half the cost. It's like building a regular house with 4 ft wide support columns, where half that size would suffice.

Interesting that each giant span sits on a pair of relatively small vulcanized rubber pads. That's to help it withstand an earthquake. The rubber starts out about 10 inches thick, but gets compressed down to about 3 inches due to the immense weight of the concrete span setting on it.

If you look at the Google Map in the pinned section and klick on "Bridge at Koh Loi" in the left column you will find a fairly exact position.

It is the "Main Road" that goes through Chiang Rai from Superhighway in the south. After it pass between the two policestations going north, that is where the new road starts and then goes over the new bridge.

I was thinking of the bridge over the Mekong connecting Chiang Khong to Huay Xai in Laos?

Drove over the bridge yesterday, it's open (sort of) for bikes but not for cars yet, maybe another 1-2 months before completed fully. I'm no expert on bridges and not a big bridge fan either but it seemed quite nice nonetheless.

I thought Toybits was our resident expert on the Little Duck Hotel Bridge?

I may have add the occasional helpful report but hardly lay claim to his level of expertise.
