Thaksin becoming an ally with Hun Sen is huge political news. What will it mean for Thaksin and the future of Thaksin's hopes to return someday as PM of Thailand?

Closer to home and handy for rabble rousing, but as soon as Hun Sen tires of him and seeks to improve relations with Thailand, he'll be in a tricky position.

As long as it doesnt affect expats who gives a rats ass

His 'few hundred million dollars' won't last forever and he wants to get his assets back, so everything he's doing has that goal in mind and don't you forget it.

I said insanity as well instead of political mistake, because TIT. You never know if he might "assume power" again! (I'm not going to say "become PM" because I'm not sure that that is how he would come back...)

Yes I did realize that some people would want to vote for both political mistake AND insane (or the other choices AND insane), but still decided on a single choice poll rather than a multiple. Any poll here is for discussion purposes only anyway.

Judging by the poll at present it looks like he may be insane. :)

Actually I wanted to vote for both political mistake and insanity but I could only chose one. Well who cares, he is finished anyways

None of your choices fit my own thoughts concerning mr thaksin(lower case) , I have better things to do in my life than give his predicament too much thought , he is the master and maker of his own doubtful future here in Cambodia or any where else for that matter . Let him try as he may , but I hope he is aware that Hun Sen has stronger eye lids than the people he has been used to dealing with , and rumour has it , he is rather alergic to wool as are most Kymer .

a rather strange move.

it doesn't make any sense to me now, but it certainly makes sense to him.

so I guess him to have some sort of grand strategy where this fits in.

About his motives, we know he is loaded and could just retire comfortably somewhere.

So his motive is power, and he wants to come back and rule Thailand.

He hopes to come back when more august powers will be in place in Thailand, allowing him to resume his political career and become Thailand's first president (come on, that's clearly his intention).

Now - how could an official position in Cambodia serve him?

The position certainly gives him back a little of political substance.

But is the rising political tension between Cambodia and Thailand part of his plan?

Does he hope Thailand will fall into chaos while tension rises even more with Cambodia so that he can emerge as the nation's savior ??

Is he thaksin-fidel castro-shinawatra taking a trip to mexico-cambodia?

Or... does he want to use Cambodia as a shopwindow for Thais to look at what they could have? Did he already agree with Cambodian government on reforms that would make thai popular classes envious?

I said 'political mistake' but would have said 'insanely arrogant, perhaps homicide-edly so' if available.

I think he's run out of options and is making desperate moves. He's trying to come off as the true patriot, revolutionary-in-exile, and his country's only hope. I think the Thais generally are tired of him and his nonsense, and, as I've been saying all along, they'll come to see his Cambodia adventure as a kind of treason. Let's see if he has enough $ to buy the loyalty he needs.

As comedian Wanda Sykes put it, Obama is presently the pride of the African-Americans, but if he screws up it's going to be "who voted for that damned mulatto anyway?" I think Taksin will get something like this if he questions the Thai-ness of others, and people will say "who does this damned Chinese think he is?"

I kinda wish there was a "It further show's he's a traitorous spiteful bastard and I hope he takes his 2 bit, illiterate, peasant thugs with him." Option :)

His universal merit might catch-up with him some day.

Thaksin has done nothing personal to me and as long as it remains that way, I don't give two hoots what he's up to. Thai politic is not our business therefore why should we get involved?

I think these people getting all up in arms over the notion of Thaksin working hard, day in and day out at his desk, for Cambodia are getting their panties in a twist over nothing. So far, and I believe, in the end, his only goal is to cleverly keep Abhisit looking all whirly and girly locked in a cat and mouse game that Abhisit doesn't stand a chance of getting out of.

The "politics" of the situation is just a smokescreen.

Remember to keep your eye on the ball (i.e. BIG Money!)

It would seem the highly regarded political analyst Chris Baker agrees with the results of the most often chosen thaivisa poll result:

But analysts said that by siding with Cambodia he could lose public support.

"To identify yourself with Hun Sen is a terrible political mistake," said Bangkok-based political analyst Chris Baker, who has written a biography of Thaksin.

"I think Thaksin has considerably weakened his own position. He's in a desperate state to try to negotiate over his money and he's overplayed his hand very badly indeed."
