'Peak Oil', How Will It Affect Los?

Featured Replies

I am ashamed to admit that I downloaded from a torrent site a new [on DVD] movie released on June 15 and was quite shaken by mike Ruppert's down to earth, well researched and frightening presentation of a phenomena that can't be denied.....we have passed 'Peak Oil' and it may be too late to adjust.

for a trailer of the doccumentary movie 'Collapse' go to Collapse Movie and if the trailer convinces you, then buy the movie. I won't suggest that you download it from a torrent site, as his cause and website does need all the support it can get.

Further reading on the subject of peak oil [and confirmation of Mike's figures] can be read on wikipedia Peak oil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Interesting food for thought and wondering how it will affect LOS???

There is only a peak in dirt cheap crude oil but there has been an explosion of new natural gas finds in Canada, US and Europe. Th cheap nat gas will bring down the demand for oil.

Plus, the higher the Bht goes against other currencies, the cheaper imports of oil become.

Not another explosion.

I was looking at peak oil 2 years ago, when the price went up to $150 a barrel. Yes all a little scary, but there is still an estimated 40 years of oil, enough time I suspect to find alternatives, and whilst it is still cheap to get the oil, others options it seems are ignored.

It is getting more difficult and costly to sustain a growing economy with a primitive energy system.

It is clear humans are destroying the systems that sustain life.

That is "crazy" no matter what planet you live on.

One smart human said, "We live withing a narrow range of boundaries."

Take note of that. Many of those boundaries have already been crossed (e.g., pH of the oceans).

LOS and every other place will be negatively affected.

Change is sometimes a good thing.

I'm sorry but I think this peak oil is a crock of ! Take the latest disaster. When I was at school we were told that oil was formed from dead trees and other dead fossils etc. Hence the name " fossil fuels "

How come the transocean rig hit oil that was 5 miles deep. Also the Russians have been finding oil at very deep depths only they were drilling on land not a mile above the surface bobbing about on the water!

Are they no trying to tell me there were trees and life 5 miles below the surface of the sea bottom all of a sudden ?

I don't think oil is a fossil fuel and believe the planet makes it via some yet unknown process. Unless somebody can explain to me where the oil at 5 mile below the surface came from ?

The place to go for your Farang food fix!

The islands Premier Farang food Outlet!

Not Thai-related despite the title, but interesting, so moving it to Outside-the-Box.

"How come the transocean rig hit oil that was 5 miles deep"

duuh.....maybe millions of years ago, it was a different world.....with different mountains seas etc. Proof is that you can find sea fosils and coral reefs here in Thailand and other inland places....way inland. Read your natural history book again.

I saw that film & agree with most of it.

If we have not seen peak oil then why is the country that sat on the worlds largest oil now drilling offshore?

That aside it will affect LOS same as it affects everywhere.

When it comes to farming for instance in many ways. They like everyone need to return to the older ways of crop rotation & get off the chemical ( petroleum based ) fertilizers & pesticides. They do actually still do it a lot in the country & they in the country still do use less machinery for planting, fertilizing & harvesting than many more industrialized countries. So....

Someone mentioned a scare when oil reached 150 a barrel... How scary will it be at 300 or 500 a barrel? Think it is not coming? What will the price of trucked food be then? What will be the cost of growing food using nothing but oil based machinery?

But yes pretty sobering film when everything is taken into account.

Glad to hear that someone else has seen 'collapse' and having seen it, it's hard to deny the truths that Michael Ruppert lays out so simply. After viewing it, I wikipedia[ed] 'peak oil' and they confirmed lots of his numbers cited.

And also true that there are/will be so many that will keep their heads burried in the sand and deny what seems to be happening now.

In my OP [that a new and strict mod locked and then moved at my request]i wanted to generate some discussion on how we [in LOS] will be affected. How dependant are we here?? Natural gas may take up some of the slack, but how much?? and some lignite [brown coal] to generate electricity may help, along with some hydro elect.

Flying....are you urging others to view 'collapse'?? I am and have burned a few cds to get the word out.

There's still untapped oil reserves in many parts of the world so 'peak oil' may only apply to one particular country, not the worldwide available supply.

You know not really. As I said in another thread I had already known about all the things he mentioned.

Things like Peak Oil

Fractional Reserve Banking

The folly of Fiat currency & the FED as one big Ponzi scheme

Financial Crisis & the derivatives etc..

While I felt he touched on each a bit he was a little too spooked & emotional due to things that had happened to him in his life.

You know this kind of thing is something you prep for.

If you spend too much time yelling at others they will either think your crazy or depressing :D

Another thing is you need to live...Be aware & prep as best you can but live ;)

If you want an easy prep to turn on folks ............

Chris Martensons Crash course is free & very well laid out. I saw it a couple years ago & it impressed me. It impressed me enough to get completely out of debt & prep in many other ways.

It is 20 videos most of them very short & understandable.

The longest is under 20 minutes & most are less than 10 each

Chris Martenson - chapters - The Crash Course - chapters, Crash Course, Economy, Energy, environment, Peak Oil, videos, what should I do

It is a much better primer than collapse.

Anyway the fact that you are now awake is a double edged sword as you will see.

Chok Dee

Peak oil will not only be defined as the glass being 1/2 or less empty.

Peak oil will also be defined by how many barrels of oil can be extracted per barrel burned.

Diminishing returns may be a better description than Peak

Oil discoveries peaked in 1964 & have been going down ever since

While new oil field discoveries have been decreasing, the recoverable oil from all reservoirs has been increasing due to advances in secondary recovery methods. The oil shale are huge potential reservoirs which are in the early stages of development. There are still arguments about the source origin of oil, but yes it possible to find ocean dwelling fossils at 15,000 foot depth and on mountains at 15,000 foot elevation. Some experts on all sides have been learning something new every year since they entered their fields and so it understandable that many of us have never heard of or understand much of the recent finding. LOS must import virtually all petroleum products, even much of the natural gas. So anything petroleum related will affect Thailand especially in foreign exchange.

Thailand does have some lignite [brown coal] and is burning it for power up north. Makes me wonder where to get the facts on how much natural gas, lignite is available easily as well as some hydro elect power. Thailand can make the one step back easier than the west, that will have to make several steps back to survive.

At this time, I'm just bring my head out of the sand and am researching peak oil and the more I learn, the scarier it gets. For others that want to bring their heads out of the sand and learn more about peak oil, there is a website and forum dedicated to that http://peakoil.com/forums/

To protect both my family and myself, I'm wondering whether to invest in solar cells and lpg vehicle or the king of metals.....gold.

In early 2010 a US military think tank predicted a global shortage of oil by 2015.

At the end of WWII in Malaysia due to a diesel fuel shortage people used coconut oil. They found it would burn unrefined in a diesel engine. (pressed dried copra, straight into the tank) One tree produces 10 litres per year. 10 rai produces 2,500 litres per year. At 8 metre spacing, inter-cropping is not a problem.

Coconut oil has a high "freezing" point. It hardens at 24c. Mixing with small amounts of other bio-fuels cures this.

'And if the US military are wrong? I've seen virgin coconut oil for sale on the internet at up to $65 per litre. :o:lol:

So off you go and do your bit to save the planet. You might even get asked back. :jap:

Regards.

Yes, there are a few alternatives that can supply a little of our needs, but it takes so much land to produce a small amount of palm oil.....508gallons per acre for palm oil and only 230 gal per acre for coconut oil and those are the best alternatives for Thailand.

The only real hope on the horizon is IF they ever work out the bugs of algae oil which has a [potiential] yield of 1500-3000gal per acre. That's a big IF!!

Last night I watched a doccumentary on how Cuba survived [and thrived] during their 'peak oil' when the USSR collapsed and the US was stopping all imports and the Cubans had to change overnight to a 'peak oil' world. it left me with a little less gloomy outlook for the world and LOS in particular. They suffered a little during the transition......it was sudden, but adjusted by going organic with farming, conserving, riding bicycles, and some alternative means of power.

the movie was titled 'The Power of Community' .....excellent doccumentary!!
