Smileys

What are the smileys? Are they Java? aplets? flash? I'm ignorant but I have programmed before and I'd like to learn how these things are made and work...I guess first I need to learn what they are called and then how to code them...I guess. All help is appreciated.

I think they are usually animated .gif files, and you can make them with a program such as Paint Shop Pro or Adobe ImageReady, in the same way as you make a banner (two or more pictures in sequence, one after the other)

in new msn messenger version can also use stupid flash-things .. hehehe

When I view 'Properties' it is shown as gif but when I save my machine wants to save it as a bmp file....I think somewhere there is a setting so that anything that gets downloaded that is graphic is done as a bmp....do you know where I can change this?...so that I can save it as a gif?
