...seems to be threads of obsession here in OTB regarding bin Laden, yes? Does this comes instinctively or was such consciousness planted by the Establishment Corporate Media Industrial Complex? They know how easy are to be manipulated......

You posted a bin Laden thread on April 29th. That was before he became the biggest news story on the planet (wedding? what wedding?). Why did you do it?

I thought it rather uncanny. Perhaps it was subconscious prescience on Zaa's part.

Possible.

Just happenstance, is all. ;)

Oh and by the way, you ask for someone's opinion, then please don't flame them for what they post.

I didn't know that I had.

I have an idea, if someone reading this doesn't want to answer or give an opinion, they can just not post at all here an move on. There are threads that I have no interest in and I don't still post trolling the topic.

This has been a troll thread from the start. The options in the poll disparage anyone who has a different opinion to you.

OK, then you are free to write your opinion here.

I'm glad that he's dead. I wish that he'd been put on trial but I understand the reasons that he wasn't. I approve of the fact that they slung him in the oggin rather than burying him on land. Answering your actual question as to how I felt when I heard the news - nothing. I didn't feel the need to climb up a lamp post and wave a flag nor to 'celebrate' his death. Now does that make me your friend, a US 'hater' or someone who was dropped on his head when young?

In the same vein as Bush's words "You're either with us or against us", I think you'll find that someone dropped on his head as a baby is a subset of "US hater". There are only two broad categories offered here, not three..

I am with Endure on the emotion (or lack therefore) I felt. His death is more of a cerebral and visceral reaction for me.

The question is: What effect will getting Bin Laden have on terrorism in the short term and the long term?

I'm glad that he's dead.

There was an option for you. :)

Happy - The bastard deserved it.

I was obviously happy but I didn't dance in the streets and scream about it. There were a lot of young people out late Sunday night near the White House celebrating. Is it just a coincidence that a few blocks away the NHL playoff game between the Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning had just ended not an hour before? BTW, Washington lost in OT. :)

As I said I felt no emotion so being happy wasn't an option that I chose. It may be the way that you felt but please don't expect me to feel that way too.

I'm glad that he's dead.

I was under the impression that "glad" was a synonym for "happy".

Oh wait. It is.

Interesting, that critique of the U.S. of any sort is, more often than not, met with the tire old label: U.S. hater or U.S. basher. From a less observed subjective view, I believe that such knee-jerk reactions are to be examined with a more insightful and humble sight.....as America and her history is not above scrutiny. A good century plus of unsavoury and unethical practices and activities should not be attached to a blindfold. Quite often, such nasties are a truer reflection of the culture.....in their direct or indirect name.

Not "any" sort. EVERY sort - some posters bash the US over and over again in almost every single post.

If the shoe fits, wear it.

....the post above would apply to blind apologists, as well.:jap:

Let's not get too personal. Some posters are 'equal opportunity bashers'. They pretty much bash everything.

'Glad' can also mean 'grateful' which is the context in which I used it. I do wish you'd stop telling me what I'm thinking.

Not according to any Thesaurus that I can find online. They are actually two different words. ;)

The Oxford University Press dictionary (I assume you're willing to accept the OUP as a reasonably authoritative source?) defines 'glad' as:

feeling pleasure or happiness:[with infinitive] :I'm really glad to hear that[with clause] :he was glad that Phyllis was gone

*

[attributive] causing happiness:glad tidings

*

grateful:she was glad of Hank's lively company

*

[with infinitive] willing and eager (to do something):he will be glad to carry your bags

I've explained my position on the death of Osama Bin Laden apparently to the satisfaction of everyone else on this thread apart from you. I have no intention of becoming involved in a Punch and Judy match about what you assume I mean rather than what I actually say. If you want to carry on misinterpreting my posts that's up to you.

Words don't always describe an emotion, regardless of the definition. How a person feels and the words available to describe it don't always fit perfectly.

I'm with Endure on this one. When I heard the news, I was 'glad', as opposed to being 'sad'. Emotionally I felt nothing.

Perhaps he used the wrong word then, but he could have admitted it, instead of splitting hairs.

Would it be possible to provide a link to that information? Every Oxford University Press Dictionary that I could find on-line does not have that reference.

I am not saying that it is not a real reference, but it seems strange that so many dictionaries and Thesaurus do not equate glad and grateful if one is a synonym for the other.

This is what I was responding to originally and my point was that there was an option for Endure - even if not exact. Even if "grateful" is a synonym for "glad", "happy" is still very close. :ermm:

Grateful can also mean happy. There is no need to nitpick.

Being gay can be used in reference to happy.

How do you feel about Bin Ladin's death? Gay, the bastard deserved it.

OK, I will concede that that response should have been included.

No, I used the word that I wanted to. If you continue to not believe me even after I've explained then up to you.

Grateful can also mean happy. There is no need to nitpick.

Accused of nitpicking by a lawyer? My life's complete :cheesy:

Indeed, there is no need to nitpick and to then carry on and on in a pointless argument over such a petty and minor point smacks of rather trollish behavior meant to wind people up.

Drop the pedantic bickering, thanks. Modding this forum is about the last thing I want to do and would rather shoot myself in the head with a blunderbuss but every once in a while I guess an appearance must be made. Dont' make me come back.

Hmm, glad or happy? I better steer clear of such controversial words and say I just thought he had it coming, got what he deserved. Then, watching the party atmosphere on the street in USA ( not sure where but shown on Fox ) I thought, I hope these people don't think anything has really changed. Short term there will be an increased security risk and long term I don't believe anything has really changed with regards to the Islamic fundamentalism that OBL has helped spawn.
