'Men in black' are policemen, Chalerm claims

The Nation

The armed "men in black", much mentioned during last year's political violence, are in the media limelight again after Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung yesterday claimed those men donned police uniforms during the day.

"I would like to reiterate here that they are policemen," Chalerm said.

He went on to say that a group of policemen from the Northeast carried out the assassination of Army specialist Maj-General Khattiya Sawasdiphol.

Khattiya was fatally shot while giving an interview to the media at the red-shirt rally in the heart of Bangkok in May last year.

"I am following up on this case," Chalerm said.

Earlier this month, Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and party senior member Suthep Thaugsuban testified to police about the deaths of 16 people who were killed during the unrest last year.

Back then, Abhisit was the prime minister and Suthep the deputy PM in charge of security affairs. Suthep at the time was also serving as the director of the Centre for Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES).

Khattiya was among the 16 victims.

Chalerm said he was speaking up now because he wanted to deter some groups from wreaking more havoc on the country.

"Please stop," he warned. "I am trying to catch you because you are trying to do a bad thing." He added that the mastermind behind these groups was now suffering from Parkinson's disease.

Asked whether he had evidence to back up his claim, Chalerm said: "If I weren't ready, I wouldn't say it."

He said one man in black was also seen riding a Harley-Davidson for a senior figure in the Government House compound last year. "He was once a police sub-lieutenant in Buri Ram. He's now a ranking general," Chalerm continued.

The deputy prime minister suggested that the police group that he claimed used to serve as men in black was involved in the recent bomb-planting incident in front of the Government Lottery Office.

That incident did not cause any casualties.

According to Chalerm, this group of policemen joined with some politicians, some of whom have since lost power, and "regular movement" groups in staging the incident.

Pheu Thai MP Pracha Prasopdee said he knew the initials of the person with Parkinson's disease Chalerm talked about.

"I once received a complaint that this man also encroached on a public area of a housing estate," he said.

Pracha blamed the man and his accomplices for trying to undermine the current government.

"They are afraid that former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will return to Thailand," he said.

Democrat Party spokesman Chavanond Intarakomalyasut urged Chalerm to stop influencing police investigations by giving public comments on cases.

"I also wonder if he has personally hired detectives, because he seems to know everything," he said.

Kudos to Chalerm for finally identifying the origins of the mysterious men in black. They are the Red on the outside, Red on the inside, "tomatoes".

Illuminating also that cops also took out Sae Daeng, which would explain the precise sniper head shot had to be well-trained.

He added that the mastermind behind these groups was now suffering from Parkinson's disease.

A much-welcomed update to the formerly ubiquitous and over-used, "his name begins with the letter "S"."

The politicos have now progressed to naming chronic ailments as the preferred roundabout means of identifying the accused. I eagerly await the line, "I'm not at liberty to say who she is, but she's morbidly obese."

he seems to know everything

If there's any doubt that he does, just ask him and he'll tell you.

Can't wait for him to become PM after Yingluck collapses.

1. I suggest you give some sober thought to the Deputy PM's statement. These alleged police officers are alleged to have been acting on behalf of the government of the time. I do not think the term is "tomato". Rather, it is mercenary. The alleged assassins were able to operate with impunity during the administration of the former Democrat government. The apparent promotion of a sub lt. to the rank of general, most likely does not sit well with some careerpolice officers, nor does it sit will with the cadre of professional military officers that were tainted by the actions of these assassins. I also suggest that you reflect on the chaotic state of the former government when it was confronted with the mass public disorder. The police and then the regular army corps had initially refused to take violently on the protestors. Restraint was shown and to a large measure, the government was descending into a state of panic. This is why the Queens Guard units were deployed and regular military units removed from the front lines. There was significant division within the ranks and officer corps as to how to respond,

2. What's your point? The principal organizer apparently has Parkinsons. It is not unusual for people to contract fatal illnesses.

3. That's your claim. The Deputy PM is commenting on this specific case. I don't think that this secret was kept secret for very long and most of the key players knew who was involved and who did what. I wouldn't be surprised if the former PM wasn't aware of the identity of the killers.

4. The Deputy PM has demonstrated caution and prudence with his statements. There is a reason why he is making these statements now. This group is alleged to be continuing its acts of sabotage and terror. It has to be stpped. Thankfully, there is someone in government with the strength and courage to speak out. You can't wait for the Deputy PM to become PM? OK. I don't think he has plans for that, but should the need arise, he would certainly be as capable as former PM Abhisit or the members of the army junta that had previously ruled Thailand.

Anyone that thinks that the Abhisit government would hire a group of mercenaries to murder soldiers and Colonel Romklao in particular on the 10th of April, a government claimed to be "puppet of the military and the elites" by those who would accuse it of such things, anyone who thinks that, plainly speaking, would be an imbecile.

Its funny that police are blamed when it was obvious that police were doing nothing to enforce the law against the red shirts during the occupation of ratchprasong.

Just another smear campaign to get rid of newin and his party.

First the transport ministry scandal and now this.

Thaksin is going after this guy for revenge.

1. Where do you get the notion Chalerm was saying the men in black were working for the Democrats? Nothing in the article reflects that.

2. Only point was the apparent change to the S.O.P. of identifying the accused with a surname initial to that of physical ailments.

3. There's been no shortage of claims from Jatuporn and other Red Shirts and multitudes of TV posters that Sae Daeng was taken out by the Army.

4. Chalerm has demonstrated intentional vagueness and elusive conjecture.

Nothing more than an attempt by Chalerm to distance his lord and savior Thaksin from the realities of the abhorrent crimes of his group in last year's red terrorist uprising. Somehow I doubt Thaksin would have been so willing to distance himself from these men while they were fighting on his side. Now that they have served their purpose and he no longer has need of them, he casts them aside like the pond scum they are. Can't say I feel sorry for them, but the hypocrisy of Chalerm is truly nauseating.

I believe Chalerm when he says he knows who they are. I'm sure he has always known. The problem now is he isn't willing to share the spoils of victory. Much easier to simply cut them out of the deal. At least we know the square faced demagogue will have one more enemy to face when the civil war begins.

I"m sorry to have to say this, but, if you think Chalerm is prudent, cautious or anything other than a thug, you are unbalanced.

In this particular case, the Deputy PM is showing prudence and caution. He is moving slowly in a calculated manner, laying out the case and perhaps setting the trap. The alleged killers would have been well protected and under the patronage of some important people. These peoplle still ahve enough influence to try and cover up the killings. By proceeding in a slow and measured manner, the Deputy PM increases the pressure and sooner or later one of the canaries will sing. Standard M.O. for rough and tumble politics. Do not under estimate the Deputy PM. He got to his position because he was skilled at his trade. You don't see him screaming or pounding his fists do you? Look at his statement on the subject and his subsequent interview.it was a restrained dialogue. He is cautiously poking the hornet's nest whilst the unsuspecting soon to be stung bystanders look on.

IChalerm got his job through the size of his lips and how much of T's ass he kissed.

If anything, he's proven to be a skilled story teller making things up as he goes along. Everything that comes out of his more is fabrication and ourtight lie. The man is similar to Jatuporn except he's a little more subtle.

Well surprise surprise Chalerm has another theory,

Trying to drive a wedge between former partners.

But it still comes off as utter B.S.

... so the Deputy PM can cast his accusations all he wants, i saw it with my own eyes, The Black Shirts were aligned/are part of the Red Shirt movement. If they are in fact police then they were not the police under the control of the ex-PM.

Chalerm has been around at least as long as Thaksin and is a past master of the black arts that are Thai politics.

GK's assessment has some validity I think.

Based on my first hand experiences... the black shirts where the militant wing of the red shirt movement, i saw them mostly as guards to the red camp during the occupation of Ratchaprasong, and they were not shy to point their guns at people who disagreed with them or refused to be searched...

... so the Deputy PM can cast his accusations all he wants, i saw it with my own eyes, The Black Shirts were aligned/are part of the Red Shirt movement. If they are in fact police then they were not the police under the control of the ex-PM.

Gee, "Police from the North East"...

That's not where Suthep and Abhisit have their strongest loyalties.

Wonder which side they side with? (rhetorical question) Answer obvious.

Like I said 'Own Goal'.

Isn't the NorthEast suppose to be one of the Red's strong hold? With high % voting for them? Now he's pointing fingers at the police from there? Am confused. Show me the evidence and just maybe I'll believe you.

I still wonder how he managed to become a politician, can't even control his own kid's action. How many people have they been 'alledged' to have shot at or...:whistling:

Though he generalised about the north-east he identified one police officer as coming from Buriram which is a whole different ball game in Isaan/Thai politics.

This was the same way the news reported it, that the men in black were red shirt guards protecting the red Camp. Didn't the army even start shooting at them when they cleared the camp? My understanding is that the majority of the police are red shirt supporters, That is why they didn't do anything to clear the demonstration?

Would I be right in thinking that the red shirts are in fact causing problems with establishing red villages, and that is causing problems for the government, so as already suggested isn't he about to shoot himself in the foot, Or strong arm his own out of control supporters?

I agree, also it is worth considering that this is a "red herring" to distract the public for something else that might be about to happen. Or might he be about to throw the sheep to the wolves to make it look good for PT? Watch this space for the next exciting episode!!:o
