How about the taxi driver and the police officer on the scene? What, they are not good enough for you? They are Thai and not farang, so no reason to not believe what the eye-witnesses and the news feeds say.

Doesn't sound like a run of the mill terrorist attack of a high value target. Sounds like a disgruntled Arab ex-pat. Glad he's history but this isn't the terrorist attack everyone was warning about.

So this is my take with timeline:

1) Somebody blows up the house of Iranian man on Soi 31:

"Police also reported another explosion at House Number 66 Pridi Bhanomyong Soi 31, which is said to be the rented home of the foreigner. He is said to have been living with two other foreigners who were not home when the explosion happened."

2) The guy leaves the house and somebody throws grenade to the taxi, he is about to take:

"Police believe the Iranian national bombed his rented house first and then left the house and tried to hail down a taxi. When the taxi driver refused to pick him up, he got angry and threw a grenade at the taxi."

3) The guy runs and Somebody throws another bomb at him, injuring him

"Police then started pursuing him upon which he tried to throw another grenade at them but missed and blew off his own legs."

So who did they catches at the airport?? He also had BIG money... Seems the Iranian guy was a target, probably a terrorist.... What about USA warning to Thailand about terror attack to Thailand? What about recent Iranian revengue around the world for killing their nuclear scientists? I guess it is a war now between west and Iran.

"There was some warning of a possible attack and police were monitoring, but we did not know where it would happen," Phrewphan Damapong told reporters.

Wasn't he saying a week ago how everything was under control?

you guys are nuts if you think a solo "terrorist" with a couple pipe bombs is the intel the US was warning about. amazing how many fools still believe the hype of the war machine. even expats. sad.

They had C4. Do you realize the horrendous amount of death that this could have caused if they put it together correctly and detonated it in the subway or in a nightclub or in a school?

Hey, you know Thailand isn't a PC country and doesn't have to act like it is. The most likely nationalities/backgrounds for foreign terrorists in Thailand are Lebanese and Iranians. The Iranian population here is shrinking because of sanctioned caused exchange rate issues. So maybe not that many people. Why doesn't Thailand cooperate with the one government that actually has good intelligence on Hezbollah and Iranian terrorists, under the radar, to screen and investigate all resident Lebanese and Iranians, including incoming? While they're at it, check for drug smuggling. Iran and Israel are at war and it should have nothing to do with Thailand. However, Thailand should not be harboring Iranian terrorists, either ones potentially acting here, or those laundering money and shipping bomb supplies abroad.

I agree with your point. I remember reading several articles a week mentioning Iranians being arrested for smuggling meth into Thailand. I haven't read any lately though... Now they're just getting caught with bomb making materials in houses.

It wasn't a run of the mill terrorist attack. Their house blew up. They did a runner. One of the got caught and blew off his legs.

It seems they didn't get around to bombing their high value target.

I'm guessing at the comments that will come from the government in the morning:

Yes, they were making bombs in the house. But they really weren't trying to attack anyplace in Thailand, because Thailand is friendly with all peoples and countries.

They were simply planning to export the bombs to unnamed other countries... most likely in fan boxes or in kitty litter bags. hit-the-fan.gif

And you know this how? Are you privy to what was in the house where the explosion occurred?

Tourism agencies eye march on embassy over US terror warning

All the ThaiVisa anti-US critics, tourism agency protesters, and Thai government officials who complained to the US because of their warning--- can now get in line for their Statements of Apology.

I would not hold my breath as the numpties are out in full force, hell-bent on blaming this mess on the US.

The TIMING relates to the recent Thailand terror threat (also Azerbaijan), fertilizer warehouse arrest, Hezbollah-Iran bombings in India and Georgia, but the TARGET makes no sense. Jury still out.

By timing, I mean the fourth anniversary of the assassination of Hezbollah's deputy leader, Imad Mughniyah.

It does have the m.o. of those despicable scum, except for the carnage being far far less than it could have been, except for the poor victims of course.

It's really hard to train suicide bombers.. you only get one attempt.

Suicide bomber training school: "Now pay attention. I'm only going to show you once."

TANN is reporting that the police have found IRANIAN currency on him.

For those unaware, Hezbollah in Lebanon is joined at the hip with the Iranian regime, as is the murderous regime in Syria. It makes no difference if this Lebanese is an Iranian national or not. Same movement. For all intents and purposes, Iran and Israel are already at war. Hezbollah is one of Iran's proxies. I don't get this target except as pure terrorism with no logical target. The attacks in India and Georgia had logical targets.

That all said, there are reports that Hezbollah (read Iran proxy) is involved in Thailand's Muslim population teaching jihadist propaganda. So who is to say at this point whether this terror event is related to international conflicts, internal Thai Muslim issues, or both?

Syria (same socialist party as Saddam Hussein, not liking the Islam) is not a friend of Iran. All that Jihad blabla is from Arab countries or from their proxies, not Iran.

The topic is much more complex. You are mixing things. Saudis, Kuwait, (Palestine), Afghanistan are these crazys

Iran is a complete different story.

I know that place very well. I used to walk from my apt. on Soi 43 to the Mosque near Soi 31. They had many mixed nationalities there, mostly Pakistani, other arabs, but why target a Muslim neighborhood if those who attacked that area are Muslim. Now I knew many of the people around that area, most of them were the motocycle taxi's who would provide really good service.

The school at Soi 13 which is right across from Soi 12 where a bomb exploded at, I used to work there.

I have not read the whole thread but lately there seems to quite a bit of an iranian connection with a few getting busted for drug smuggling. The proceeds from the ones who make it through could certainly be used to finance terror operations.

yes it is strange....it isn't difficult to make a bomb and throw it inside Siam Paragon. Or no one checked me on the Sky Train. In Station Siam, you could do terrible things with a small bomb.

But why make the crazy stories.....You can't mobilize people for starting a war so always you pretend to defend.

With all due respect, but I think this is an inappropriate incident / time to gloat. Anti-US criticism, tourism protesters etc. aside, people were injured and many others could have been killed or seriously injured and scared for life.

It still seems unclean what exactly his agenda was, who sent him and if this lone bomber was in fact the threat that the US authorities warned about.

PS: No, I didn't criticize the US terror alerts.

This is what makes my head spin. The terrorist alert originated from the Israelis. 14 countries issued the alert to their citizens concerning safety in Thailand due to terrorist activities, yet most EVERYONE singles out the US as the bad guy in this equation. <deleted>!!!!!

The Thai governemnt was so upset with those US warnings to American citizens in Thailand last month as they feared it would negatively impact tourism. Guess what? Bombs impact tourism even more, so get your act together. I for one will contunue to watch for posted warnings from my US Embassy thank you very much.

And my daughter used to go to that school.

I'm not saying it makes it OK. Its just that so many people are trying to make sense of why it would be a target at all.
