Nattawut “R” Boonprakob clings to life in the ICU of Vachira Phuket Hospital.

PHUKET: -- A man is in critical condition at Vachira Phuket Hospital after being shot twice in the back of the head in downtown Phuket Town over the weekend.

Phuket City Police were notified of a shooting in front of the Rattana Mansion apartment block on Chana Jaroen Road at 3pm on Saturday.

Duty Officer Sermpan Sirikong identified the victim as Nattawut “R” Boonprakob, a 22-year-old resident of Wichit subdistrict.

Phuket Kusoldharm Foundation rescue workers rushed Mr Nattawut to the emergency room at Vachira Phuket Hospital before investigators arrived at the scene.

“Officers questioned Nuttawut’s friends, who said that they joined him earlier that day for a karaoke singing session at the amusement arcade on the second floor of Ocean Plaza shopping mall. They were sitting on a sofa, waiting in line in front of karaoke room two, when another group of youths arrived,” said Lt Col Sermphan.

The cause is unclear, but the two groups had an immediate, mutual disliking. Nattawut and friends followed the other group to karaoke room 20, where a fight ensued. After the fight, both groups left the area, said Lt Col Sermphan.

The violence had not ended, however.

“Nuttawut and four friends were on motorbikes and preparing to leave the parking area in front of the Big One convenience store, next to Rattana Mansion, when three men drove up on a Honda Wave. One of the three drew a gun and opened fire, hitting Nattawut twice in the base of the skull.

The caliber of the weapon was not announced by police.

No witnesses at the scene were able to remember the color or license plate number of the vehicle, but after reviewing the CCTV images, police believe they know the identity of the assailants and are searching for them now.

Tell me of a place that is 100% safe and I'll say you are in la-la fantasy land.

Phuket is a bit sick at the moment. The health of some of Phuket organs has not been taken care for years. Lot's of drug abuse and general mistreatment has caused an cancer.

Hopefully the new treatments from Bangkok will bring some cure for the problems. There is probably need for strong chemotherapy to kill all the cancer cells. Let's wait and see how the treatment works. Hoping for fast recovery.

It is interesting how there seems to be this handful of posters here that make comments like this on every single news item involving crime in Phuket. I have to assume they are involved in Samui or Hua Hin tourism some how.

when they say they know the identity of the shooter, then that means they are either on the police or daily trouble makers

Good job police.

Classic TV 'logic' ... very impressive...

Why in Thailand is a 22 year old a "youth"? Exactly how old does a Thai man have to be before he is no longer considered a "youth"?

so how else could the police know a young killer from a blury CCTV camera a few hours after the crime has happened?

instead of being a smartass, explain yourself. you're not looking quite as clever as you think you were with your reply.

No punch intended but do you really believe that anything will change for the better here? New bars, shopping centers, asphalt (even where people not are allowed to drive) buy new car rebate and imported vine and cheese is not what I consider improvement in a province which regard them self as the “democratic stronghold” of Thailand!

No, not really believe change would happen at least for next few years. Even tough people don't like the current situation, they have been too long under the powers who rule this island to thing they could do the change.

In general it seems that nowdays there is more drug busts, than there were resent years. This could mean that the police is now forced to tackle the issue. On a short term this could mean that there is less drugs available. This will cause hike on the drug prices, which will increase thievery and crazy acts by the druggies who need their dosages. Longer term a good start.

Then again I try keep my hopes up just in case this this time there would be enough effort from Bangkok to start the change.

If Bangkok brings authorities to the island which the general population can trust, it can spark the community feeling on the island. That's imho the only way to clear the overwhelming scum which has polluted the island.

In a meanwhile, I keep looking for alternative locations to stay. Southern Europe could be nice and cheap place to stay after a few years :)

Never.

They always stay about 10 years old in their head.
