Wiring Lighting

Featured Replies

Hi can anyone show me a simple diagram on wiring light switches and lights,,got no earth connection and just says live 1 and live 2 on switch ect thanx dave

basically what you have is 2 or 3 wires going to the light, One is the Hot wire, (live) the other one is the return, if you look, in your circuit box , you will see the hot wire coming out of your Circuit beaker and the return on the common bus bar. and id you have a third wire it would be the ground.

the ground is connected to the fixture housing and to the box, you don't need to worry about that.

The hot wire is connected to one side of the light and the return is connected to the other side.

If you did only that you will have a close circuit and the light will remain on all the time.

So you need a devise to open and close the circuit. This would be the switch

The switch has two wires, one goes to the Hot (live)side of the light light and the other is connected to the hot (live ) wire, in essence it is an extension of the Hot (live) wire to the switch where it can be opened and closed.

There are two methods of wiring lights.

1. Wire the L and N to each lighting fitting and then wire a L to the switch with a return (switched) SL to the fitting. The L and N are looped to each fitting. There are 3 terminals at each fitting L ,SL and N.

2. Wire the L and N to each light switch and the switched L and a N to each light fitting. Here there are 2 terminals SL and N.

The switch must operate in the L conductor to the light fitting. If the fittings are to be earthed there will be an earth terminal at each fitting.

Switches may be single pole or double pole. double pole will switch both L and N.

Method 2 is the one generally used in Thailand.
