July 26, 201213 yr My father in law wants us to fix his chainsaw. It says on the outside it is a Skil, SK3500, however it could be a fake. His Makita welder certainly isn't a Makita. Anyhow, as I am learning where things are in Chiang Rai, I would like to know if there is a recommended shop. I don't know what is wrong with it yet. He didn't explain that yet. I assume it is an engine problem.
July 27, 201213 yr might try the large tool shop SW of Overbrook hospital. The owner there is handy fixing all sorts of handtools, and he speaks ok English. I've had two chainsaws here. One was a Chinese thing, bought new, which worked for about 7 hours, then died. Had the motor rebuilt, it worked for another hour, then died a final death. I bought an American Homelite 2nd hand. It was no better than the first chainsaw I ever had, a Homelite I bought new in 1972. You'd think in nearly 40 years, Homelite would figure how to improve their product. Also, the one I have now has an 18" bar. Anything over 12" is illegal in Thailand, so don't tell anyone what I just told you. Up until a few years ago, all non-governmental chainsaws were illegal - I guess because too many people were going out and cutting down teak.
July 28, 201213 yr Author It's a tough chainsaw, when he uses it it goes all day, making boards from fallen trees. In fact after I posted this he used it all the next day, so he either fixed it or he is working around the problem. Anyhow, thanks for the info and I won't tell anyone about your illegal chainsaw.
July 28, 201213 yr If your dad wants to cut some wood around my place let me know. There are a few small trees which are shading more desirable (macadamia) trees. I'll treat him to a Muslim yellow rice (his choice of meat) at a local restaurant, in exchange.
