Top police brass calls for public help in making Phuket safer

PHUKET: -- ROYAL Thai Police Assistant Commissioner-General Chalermkiat Srivorakan has appealed to the people of Phuket to help police in maintaining public safety.

The Assistant Commissioner’s plea came at the launch of a publicity campaign in Patong on August 17 to promote the new Patong Safety Zone project to tourists.

“Crime is on the rise everywhere these days, especially in tourist areas, where foreigners are targeted. This directly affects the reputation of those areas among tourists,” Lt Gen Chalermkiat said.

He added that with the Asean Economic Community (AEC) coming into effect in 2015, the Thai government had set a national target of earning 2 trillion baht through tourism.

“Ensuring the safety of tourists and tackling the problem of crime is necessary and requires every part of society to cooperate. There is a limited number of police officers, so we need cooperation from the public to keep an eye out for crime, especially in communities such as Patong where there are many tourists,” he said.

Patong Police Superintendent Chiraphat Pochanaphan explained that Patong has about 150 police officers, not enough to effectively enforce the law throughout the whole town.

“We need 90 more officers. We have already requested these extra officers, but have been told to wait until next year,” he told the Gazette.

“There are simply not enough new recruits. Every police station has the same problem,” he said.

Col Chiraphat said that his officers were now working with volunteers to assist police in improving public safety.

“This includes people such as beach guards, security guards at nightlife entertainment venues and at hotels, as well as Civil Defense Volunteers,” he explained.

Such volunteers are being issued police radios so that they can report incidents directly and immediately to the police, he added.

Regarding the CCTV network being set up to cover the entire safety zone, Col Chiraphat explained, “Extra computer servers are being installed in the CCTV control room at Patong Police Station. I have checked many CCTV systems across Patong and they are working well. They are ready to be hooked up as soon as the servers in the control room are ready.”

Once the system is operational, police will invite local business owners and other people working or living in Patong to sign up for access so any member of the public can help monitor the thousands of CCTV cameras that will be providing real-time footage to the police CCTV control center.

I read somewhere years ago that Thailand has one of the largest police forces per capita in the world.

Just look around if something happen and notice how many " civilians" will digg a radio out of their pocket which is connected to the police channel in some way.

Yet they engage some more volunteers?

Lets all have some cctv's on the television in the livingroom. Definitely cheaper than True visions and probably more entertaining as well.

Maybe there could be a bit of competition on this field.

As the police is not able to provide enough polices to the stations, why not to invite the military to take care of this. There would be 150 police and 150 military personnel. After 6 months all the residents of the area would be able to vote which group they wish to take care of the security of the area.

I think if embassies started giving out travel warnings for people planning to holiday in Phuket then they would find the resources. Maybe just Australia, UK, Germany, Sweden, the US and a few others.

Absolutely incorrect. We simply need well trained police who are motivated by things other than cash. We need men with moral fiber, who are willing to stand up to the goombahs, and enforce the law. We need a well trained police force, that has decent equipment, forensic equipment and supplies, and the backing of the government. We need men who are not willing to sell their souls for a few baht. We need spine, will, and volition. We do not need corrupt "toy police" who are unwilling to track down the perpetrators of a crime, because their superiors are being paid off, by the jet ski sh**heads, the taxi sh**heads, the tuk tuk sh**heads, the club owners, etc., etc, etc. When will these guys wake up, and smell the coffee? Does anyone believe a single work a guy like Lt Gen Chalermkiat says, when he utters such nonsense, as the public has to get involved? Sure it would be nice if the public would do the work the police are unwilling to do. Where is the Anna Hazari of Thailand? Who will stand up to the goombahs and risk their lives, and the well being of their families, if the police are unwilling to do the work of men, and instead behave like little boys all hypnotized by the glitter, and gold?

Thai men are treated like children by their women because they generally behave like naughty little boys when given an inch of slack. Cops are no exception. Put a woman in charge of reform. She will not have the same personal egocentric, face saving, dick swinging agenda as a man and will be in a much stronger position of psychological advantage over the macho pond life that currently runs amok.

Well, given the headline, I was going to suggest they introduce a scheme that's helped a lot in western countries ...

... but it's have to be renamed for Patong - so who wants to volunteer for the Neighbourhood Crotch?

i know many schemes are just hot air, and many posters are just being humorous...

but occasionally the posts and posters almost want things to be negative and fail and enjoy it.....

occasionally (and maybe only) some credit should be given for at least seeing the issue and doing something about it....

Its simply sad to hear a Police boss saying the public shall help police especially in a country where there are accepted to run away from responsibility.

Have you ever dealt with the Thai police? Is there more action and therefore money for them here in Phuket or Bangkok or an assignment in Pang Na? Why are there checkpoints looking for fines near the end of every month? Really, you don't understand?
