Just a point of detail, In Malaysia Shariah law applies only to Muslims

This is not under Shariah Law - it is an EXTREMELY WELL KNOWN common law for ALL entering Malaysia.

Sorry but I honestly cant drum up any sympathy for people pushing drugs, and as illustrated elsewhere, 14Kg of the stuff can NOT be considered a small amount for personal use - even if there was such a get-out under Malay law - which I am fairly sure there is not.

Singapore and Thailand also have strict laws on this - in reality, it is completely irrelevant that it was 14Kg of hashish or 14Kg or pure Cocaine - the crime stands and the definition is plain and straightforward for any idiot to understand - well - ALMOST any idiot...

Why are you shouting? I was responding to a general comment regarding law in Islamic countries and that Sharia law does not apply to all people in Malaysia - calm down...

The fact that alcohol and tobacco are completely legal in most places and marijuana gets someone the death penalty - just goes to show how screwed up the "war on drugs" really is.

Well done Malaysia

Seriously? For marijuana? You're congratulating Malaysia for killing somebody for a plant that does vastly less physical and social damage than alcohol? Amazing !!!

I would say that you've been indoctrinated very effectively -- to the point where common sense judgements are well beyond you capability.

Do some research and open your mind to the REAL reasons that marijuana has been demonized and alcohol, undeniably one of the most (if not THE most) harmful substances on the planet, is legal.

Your 3-word post and both pitiful and terrifying.

Yeah well, today is marijuana, and if all goes well he will upgrade to harder and harder stuff, so good

riddance i say...

may be he started on alcohol .

I'm not a resident of Malaysia and of course it's not up to me to question their law system neither.

Although being a police officer, I agree that you get punishment after whatever crime committed, but I can not sympathise with a country applying such a cruel penalty for this particular offence.

It's up to international politicians to get this issue into debate. Not only in this region, but also for the Middle East...

On the other hand, how ignorant can one be tempting a country's law system, knowing the punishment one will get when caught smuggling drugs in or out the country ?

I'd call it stupidity or arrogance.

The elder expats here in Thailand surely will remember the flashing message at Don Muang warning that you would get the death penalty when caught smuggling drugs.

As we know the abuse of alcohol and tobacco have a very negative impact on society and health costs are huge, as well as the death rates. Sure some people are physiologically addicted to marijuana, but I haven't heard of use leading to death or commonly domestic violence as with alcohol, but there are some cases of use triggering mental illness. The argument that marijuana use is the lead in to hard drugs such as heroin has never been proven even though a number of government sponsored studies have been undertaken. Obviously the person who has received the death penalty has no one to blame but himself, though it doesn't make it right.

I had to add this later to say that feel a little foolish falling for Theboy's obvious troll post. Nobody could actually believe that Malaysia is right in doing this. I honestly believe that "Theboy" is trolling -- knowing very well that his statement is so ridiculous and will get a strong reaction from rational people.

I have no time for either Malayasia or its apartheid programme.

I do support this type of action though, 14 KILOS <deleted>, it could hardly be passed off as "a bit of personal"

Why dont all you pro-weed types go and arrange a "smoke in" at Lumpini park and see how much support you get.

It's not a matter of being pro-weed. It's a matter of being pro-justice.

Making a much more harmfull substance like alcohol legal and a naturally growing and statistically-proven less harmful one like marijuana illegal may seem absurd. It surely is absurd, but the problem goes much deeper than that. Do some research from non-propagandist sources and learn the REAL reasons ganja is illegal.

They might if it were as available, as cheap and legal. wink.png

The laws of Malaysia are inhuman and inacceptable.

So don't go there. It's their country, their views, their laws and legal system. We all need to be aware of the laws of any country we go to and the punishments for offences. This guy new the risks, got caught and may pay the ultimate price. I've lived in countries with much more oppresive and draconian laws (to me) than Malaysia - but that was my choice and I obeyed the laws whilst there.

They don't "all" crave tobacco and alcohol, either, but that seems kind of irrelevant. Obviously most people avoid marijuana because it is illegal and has a stigma attached to it - but their dislike typically has nothing to do with not liking the marijuana experience. There are very few drugs that are as harmless as marijuana, yet it seems to be one of the most hated. It really is interesting. For the record, I don't even smoke it... but I know plenty of people that do and live completely functional lives, run their own businesses, etc. I have known people who's lives have been ruined by alcohol however...

Yes it's their laws - but we can still have a discussion about what we feel about that law can't we? Otherwise we should just all throw our hands up in the air and not question anything again I suppose... ;)

Love the way all the "enlightened" people (idiots) and do-gooders come out and condone use of 'weed', ganja' whatever. Yeah man, it ain't harmful (bullsh*t), and does not lead to hard drugs - No? Not high enough? Try this...

14kgs is a commercial quantity. Do the crime be prepared to do the time. In this case time is running out. The law is very clear. The penalty also. This guy rolled the dice and will now pay the ultimate. I am no fan of Malaysia or it's archaic laws, and I am certainly no fan of any drug. Everything in moderation including laws and alcohol. I don't want my kids offered any 'mind altering' substances anytime, anywhere. One less now to contend with.

Alcohol is definitely a drug that affects peoples behaviour, albeit legal in most countries. My personal opinion is ganja should be decriminalised with the same laws applied for unlawful use e.g. underage, whilst driving etc

Let me do the job for free. Good riddance I say well done Malaysia !

You must be a total ignoramus or totally heartless if you think that the trafficking of marijuana warrants the death penalty. Get yourself an education, or a heart.

It doesn't really matter what you think.....It is Malaysian Law and that is what counts and applies.

FWIW on the BBC World News ticker bar just 24 hours ago. New research shows over use of marijuana lowers your IQ significantly.

People should respect the laws in whatever country they visit. Do the crime and do the time. Death sentence for cannabis, regardless of the amount is crazy though. Alcohol is like heroin compared to cannabis. Cannabis ABuse can fuc_k mess up your head though, ive personally seen it in many people. But those that got messed up in the head by cannabis smoked so much that they would have been dead, if it was alcohol they were ABusing instead of cannabis.
