Gasalawng in Tree Town not open last night.

Erratic opening hours, is a sure sign, it wont be around for long.

First Visit : Not Open.

Second Visit : Open, and only one table available (a good sign surely) which unfortunately was next to a diner that lit up as soon as our food arrived, and as already mentioned the loud music from nearby was a bit of a pain also. But the food was good, and I wanted to return to try some other items on their interesting menu.

Third Visit (last night) : Dead ... but after my last experience I decided I would rather sit at one of the tables inside. We enter and immediately notice that the tables are covered with staffs bags, mobiles etc. .... Erm .... Erm .... "Can not sit here" .... Sorry ? ...... "Farang can not sit here as he not like smell from cooking" .... "CAN NOT" .

So we wished them good luck for the future, as this bunch of Clowns will need it !

The food there is really good. Their Khao Soy would be excellent even in Chiang Mai. They are a nighttime only restaurant. It's true they don't want customers to sit inside because of the cooking smoke. They have tables on the roof as well. I don't think the place is a difficult place to eat at at all except for people that demand corporate sterility and total predictability. They are doing good business and that's a good thing. We finally have a decent Northern Thailand food restaurant here. Don't be scared off. Try it yourself. The food is that good that I'm sure most people will be happy to put up with a few trivial quirks.

Up to you.

Why?

I also have been three times.

The food is even better than I thought after my first visit.

They may need to expand as they are getting popular.

For people that like Northern Thai food in Pattaya, it's their loss not to go. Not to even mention I think they are actually UNDER-PRICED for the quality level.

There is quirk I want to share though. On my last visit ordering water they asked if I want it cold. I always want it cold, so yes. So what they did was serve a huge bucket of ice as if I was having a bottle of whiskey. Cost more than the water. So heads up on that.

To add, on my first visit I did sit inside and for some reason, that was OK. Later visits I've noticed the few tables inside are covered with stuff and not really open to customers. I asked to sit inside and they explained about the cooking smoke and they did not make any racial insinuations about that. Another member suggested they are discriminating against non-Thai people on that. I have no way of knowing if that's the truth or not. But customers should realize they will probably be sitting outside either ground or roof level. I'd rather sit inside too but many venues are open air like that, so take it or leave it.

Who eats Khao Soy at night time ?

A lunchtime dish surely ?

Fair enough but they have a robust menu as you well know. I make no secret that my focus on this thread is the FOOD. Others have other priorities. When other factors such as really bad service ruin the meal, they become important. I don't think there is anything nearly so bad at this place that rises above that they clearly have the most robust menu and best NORTHERN Thai food in town and at very low prices at that. I don't really see how people can complain much about small stuff when they're doing that. If there were ten places offering similar, I could see choosing based on that. There isn't even one other place that is doing what they're doing with NORTHERN Thai food (the robust menu I mean, there are other places to get Khao Soy and a few other dishes but not as good). To diss this place if you like NORTHERN Thai food is really like looking a gift horse in the mouth.

For those that have missed it, we're talking here about KASILONG restaurant in the Tree Town night entertainment and food complex on Soi Buakhow.

Anyway, currently I really don't think they need my help defending them as the way things are going, it's going to become hard to get a table there. I would say eat there before they raise their prices.

Let's focus on restaurants please.

But, it was a bit chuckle-worthy.?

Ok JT,  back on topic sir.

I tried Sizzler because I was in the mood for a salad.

Ordered an ice coffee and the salad bar.

Overall ok for 399 baht.

Spent 150 bht on charcoal tablets and immodium that evening.

Never ever again would anyone in their right mind eat at the Royal Garden location, unless you wish to lose kg quickly and run up your water bill.

Your welcome.

Are you sure you are telling the truth here ? The salad bar at Sizzler is 140 baht, a promotion running until March. And an ice coffe cant be more than 100. So where did you get 399 from ?

I only come for the salad bar and I eat there weekly , never been sick , the Royal Garden location is probably the best Sizzler in town . Best value for money if you want a salad buffet.

Ice coffee plus salad bar.  I am not making this up, just wanted to share a less than pleasant experience.

Maybe just a bad luck day.

Followup to this post about a new Korean food stall:

I did try the beef kalbi for 180 which turned out to be a small set of the meat cooked with some veg, rice, kimchi, and broth. I found both the flavor and portion to be less than impressive. I wish I had tried the kalbi on bread because that's more interesting, but I won't be rushing back there for anything now. Oh well!

Dave's Cantina is currently the best choice for Mexican in Pattaya by most estimations. Not particularly authentic, not particularly cheap, but good according to many. The one time I ate there it seemed competent.

There is also a relatively cheap taco stand (not open today, opens again tomorrow) in the Buakow market near Tony's Gym, the market closer to Central Road. The food at Taco Taco Tex Mex is done by a young Thai woman whose father is Spanish, I believe. To me it's the best current choice as the prices are so good--two tacos for 70 baht last I saw (90 for beef). She also does burritos and quesadillas.  She's not trying for authenticity, simply good food using Mexican flavors.

I tried 2 beef tacos at "Taco taco tex mex" for 90B.  Very very tasty, but small. They didn't put a dent in my appetite. I banged 2 down like little hors d'oeuvres or tapas.

Again,  flavor was excellent.  Most men would need four+ tacos, mexican rice and refried beans to call it a meal.

A wee update on the opening of BBQ Prime Time on Soi Made in Thailand at the Pagoda Bar.

I was told this restaurant has connection whatsoever to the well known Scottish chef that used to work at the closed Jomtien location.

Still haven't tried it. I find the feel of the place kind of off putting but maybe that's just me.

Chinatown

Chinese Food Court and Restaurant

Previous mentioned on this thread.

In Jomtien at Jomtien Complex bar area on Tappraya corner.

You can't miss it! It's a very ambitious operation.

Right now they are in a very soft opening with a very limited mostly rice plates menu but much, much more is coming starting in March.

They will also be getting a noodle machine that's being shipped from China but likely that will still take a while.

Very varied menu including some dim sum items.

Including items that are westerner friendly like sweet and sour pork/chicken/fish, Kung Pao chicken. (150)

From low cost items, noodles and snacks, to higher end large family seafood platters. Whole steamed fish -- 350.

A key person there is from Shanghai. Not sure about the chefs.

There will even be an open air street stand area in front of the restaurant.

The prices are very reasonable. All indications are that this place is NOT a tourist trap.
