There are some German/Swiss places on Darkside that do those dishes.

Swiss Den, Lan's Garden, Mickey's, Samis.

Thanks Hackjam.  Been to a few German restaurants around town but I am looking for an authentic Hungarian restaurant in Pattaya (or even Bangkok if anyone knows).

Update on the Food Court at Avenue Mall

I commented on this place before soon after it first opened and it was sad, sad, sad.

Well it has evolved into a place that is actually worth visiting.

The food court is in the rear of the mall, ground level, when entering from 2nd road. It's enclosed, air conditioned, and they use a cash card system. Annoyingly they keep a 10 baht deposit on the cards, so if you buy 200, you only have 190 to spend.

 

There are a lot more stalls running in there now than before and they are not all Thai food. Unlike the last time there were actually a fair number of people eating in there, though it wasn't anywhere near crowded (but who really wants to worry about not finding a table). 

 

I counted at least three stalls selling pad krapow which is something I was feeling like eating. I chose the one with the picture of a Thai cook lady on it. I had pad krapow gai with rice, and the requested runny egg was cooked fresh and perfectly. It wasn't minced chicken as I prefer but it wasn't that processed stuff either. It was real chicken cut into small pieces. The flavor was good. 60 baht including egg.

 

I've tried the two places at T21 food court serving pad krapow and this one was much better.

 

There is a "Japanese restaurant" section taking up perhaps three stalls so that's a fairly major operation and I noticed a lot of customers there. I didn't really look at their menu though.

 

There is a sort of Israeli food stall serving shakshuka (poached eggs in tomato sauce), beef kebab, and chicken BBQ. It didn't look that impressive but nice to see variety. Unsolicited suggestion -- they should sell hummus! 

 

What interested me the most was the Chinese food stall. It seems to have a Taiwanese focus. They have a menu above and a menu in front. The item I wanted on the menu above was not on the menu in front so maybe that means only look at the menu in front. The items aren't numbered so the poor guy had to take a long walk to see what I was trying to order, and then no have. Anyway I settled for the minced pork noodle soup (served with soft boiled egg and greens) for 60 and the scallion pancakes for 55. The broth in the soup was quite rich, the bought in noodles were ample and chewy, and the pork was served Taiwan style. Not enough scallions in the scallion pancakes but overall I would say the food was better than expected. The food is cooked fresh and not all that fast. Not complaining at all about that. Imagine getting served pre-cooked scallion pancakes (yuck). 

 

Other items there include fried and steamed dumplings, spicy beef noodle soup, a special fried egg dish, and a cold chicken and noodles w/ peanut sauce dish.

 

It's not easy to find decent Chinese food in town for such low prices, so very happy this place is operating.

 

Pretty much everything else was the usual Thai food stalls, drinks, fruits, etc.

 

So to my view this place has progressed to a place that it's even worth travelling to.

The Beerfest (T21 and the Avenue) has a signature Goulash and a pretty decent draught weissbier too.

Try Domicil on 2nd Road,  between Soi 7 and Klang. I believe it is an Austrian resto.

I've done a lot of walking around Pattaya but I have to admit I have never walked down the alley Domcil 2 is located on.  TBH I thought it was only to get into the Hospital parking lot.

 

Looked at the menu.  Not Hungarian but will give it a try.  It's very close to home.

It is on the main 2nd Road, opposite the Soi going to the hospital. They do a bit of a BBQ in the evening.

I would love a real deal Hungarian goulash. Thats saying alot considering the last time I had one was in Budapest and the rotten deer meat in it gave me violent food poisoning.

More on the Avenue food court.

The Japanese triple wide restaurant has a large selection of low priced ramens among other things of course. The expanded ramen menu is not in English though.

There are some other non Thai options I failed to mention before. A steak stall. A pizza stall. And to be opening an Indian grill stall of the well regarded Imli Grill on Walking Street. I hope they lower their prices for the food court venue.

Tried two more dishes at the Taiwanese stall. Had the Steamed dumplings 8 for 80 and the cold chicken noodle salad with peanut sauce for 60. Bueno.

The Place Israeli restaurant long ago reviewed on Soi Buakow did a major modernization some years ago. Also an expanded menu. The didn't even have falafel before but now they do. Simon's went out of business so now there is The Place, Jasmine also on Soi Buakow, or the synagogue restaurant in Centara hotel. The menu at The Place has English and pictures so easy to understand. Prices on the higher side such as beef stew with two sides for 390.

I got one today but wasn't expecting much, so didn't take pictures. The tortilla was homemade--excellent, much better than store bought stale stuff. Beans were black and delicious. Rice was ok, but a bit bland for me. After I talked to the lady and mentioned it and she said you can get Spanish rice instead. Nice.

 

The meat was stewed pork, tasty. Included were two packets of hot sauce as I asked for extra spicy. I also got a packet with sour cream for an extra 15 baht. It was a full meal--decent sized and very filling. Delivery was prompt.

 

Total cost 115 for burrito, 15 for sour cream, 130 baht. This is the most exciting development for me in Pattaya since the sadly departed Banh Mi sandwich place opened. Making a burrito like this takes ages--I've done it: so many components.

 

I hope she does well and continues--this is ****exactly***** one of the things that has been missing in Pattaya.

Big Kahuna by Jomtien Complex on Pratamnak (previously "Pastrami on Rye"):

 

The last 4 or 5 times I ate there I had their Pepperoni Calzone and was very pleased:  Light dough covering, lots of gooey cheese & pepperoni, and a side dish of delicious pizza sauce (there was no sauce inside the calzone, just cheese & pepperoni).

 

Ate there this week and the Pepperoni Calzone has gone way downhill:

• The dough is dark (whole wheat?) and not fluffy
• Instead of a nice thick, crescent-like shape, it was sprawled out to a flat semi-circle with less cheese
• The side dish was some sort of barbecue sauce (!)

So, next time I'll revert to a sandwich and hope *they* are still up to standard.

Dropped in to Food World at Avenue Mall today just to check out what Jingthing posted.  My first visit here since it first opened.  Was definitely busier than before.  Maybe 20 customers at 6 pm.  However, 20 customers in that large space makes it look rather empty.  I specifically wanted to see the Japanese stands.  Prices ok 69-89 baht.  A lady was having a ramen and I would definitely need more than 1 to fill me up.  I'd select the tonkatsu ramen or rice.  I didn't eat today as I had a late lunch but will return and provide a review.

 

I'll have to give Bz Burritos a try too.  Seems cheap and I don't have to leave my room!  My head is pretty big though so I'm sure it isn't going to live up to its motto!

Simon's Israeli (sadly closed) is now some kind of Spaghetti Bistrot.

I was too lazy to walk up the stairs to look at it up close but it's an interesting concept for the area.

Update on this.

This new Spaghetti Bistrot has a very similar menu and prices as the closed tent restaurant of the same name that used to be behind the Avenue Mall.

I confirmed with the people there that it was so, and it was so.

I used to enjoy their North African Merguez with hot harissa sauce pasta which is a very unusual offering, and the new place has it too. 

They also offer pizzas, main dishes, etc.

That restaurant had moved to The Roof on top of Avenue Mall, but I've never been there so I don't know if they're still doing that same kind of food.
I get the feeling based on the vibe when I checked out the menu at the new place that it's been on the slow side. 

Upon going up the stairs I was physically assaulted by a swarm of massage ladies trying to drum up business for their upstairs place and when I said no, one said, then why you go up there, you live there? I guess they aren't Italian food fans.

The newer Isaan restaurant at the T21 Mall.

I don't know if it's a chain or unique location but the branding is sophisticated so I'm assuming a chain.

I can't find it on google. If you can find a link about it, please post. 

Moderate prices for a type food that many associate with street food prices.

So hopefully the food is better than street food. 

I tried the pork chunks with lime leaves which turned out to be kind of candied meat dish, it reminded me a bit of food from the U.S. south maybe because the flavor was similar to  molasses. Not a dish I would want to eat often (I'm not big on candy) but it was still delicious. About 140 baht.

Wanted to order the salmon soup but no have, so went for the duck soup.

Generous portion of sliced duck, large variety of vegetables, typical Isaan soup flavor. Excellent. 120 baht.

Service was unenthusiastic. English not spoken. 

All the other customers were non-Thais which was weird for their type of food, but maybe a fluke. 

Service added 10 percent. No tax added.

They feature gai yang and Korat noodles.

My impression so far is that this place has very good food and offers versions of Isaan dishes that are a step above street food.

"Organic" "Avocado" "Ice Cream"

Find one of the guys selling avocados and you'll see a frozen dessert vending machine with a picture of an avocado and the price 40 baht.

It was explained to me there is some avocado in it but mainly a mix of fruits. Described as organic, no dairy, no added sugar. So I guess kind of a sherbet or fruit ice.

You would think an avocado dessert would be green but it was PINK!

The dominant flavor was banana. It was rich and light at the same time, and a very generous portion served in a cup.

I'm assuming this is a TEMPORARY offering, so if this sounds like a good dessert (I loved it) come and get it!

cherry's not closed. the lone star closed due to a pattern of dreadful service.  plenty of rib places. the place next to smoking joes is far superior. Bruno has closed and reopening as a Chinese.  homers retreat is now a pho restaurant

That's what happens when you hire your Thai wife and all her lazy relatives/friends as your wait staff.  Owner isn't much better at customer service.  When I complained about the service once the owner was quite nonchalant about it.   In one ear and out the other.  I actually enjoyed the food at Lone Star.  A shame really.

Visited Central Marina the other day and was saddened by the demise of Texas Chicken.  Not that I go often but it was a treat for me once a month.  Place was getting busier over time.  Guess Thai prefer their KFC.

 

Anyone know of another Texas Chicken in Pattaya?

Santa Fe.  I'm sure most of us have tried Santa Fe located in most of the malls around Pattaya so this is likely nothing new.  Only posting this because the current special spaghetti in corn sauce for 59 baht and chicken for 79 baht are quite decent and very good value for an actual restaurant.  With my 24 baht water total bill is only 162 baht for a filling meal.
