Hilux Service Intervals

Featured Replies

I bought a Hilux 3.0 diesel last year, and it's just had it's 10k service at a little under 6 months, with no problems. However the dealer was saying it will need it's next service at 15,000Km which seems very early for a brand new diesel that isn't doing any real heavy towing or anything. I would think the next should be at 20,000km, which will come up well within 6 months at the current rate of progress.

Anyone have any experience with this? Are they just pushing oil changes at the moment or is there some reason to change it so quickly?

When I buy a new vehicle and drive it from day 1, it gets serviced (oil change) every 5K, it's cheap enough to do and is a good safety mechanism for extending vehicle life - I just bought a new Vigo that had it's 1k service last week, it will follow the same pattern of service every 5K.

My Hilux has been serviced every 10k, as per the dealers advice.

Yes 10k is right but have you ever seen the state of the oil when it come's out at 5k as C/M say's it's so cheap do it every 5k One thing to check is that they grease the prop shaft most of them you will find seem to forget that bit.

True enough about it being cheap enough to do at 5k!

The MOST important is oil and filter change at 1000km. thumbsup.gif . After that If mineral oil, every 5000km, if semi synthetic, 10,000, if synthetic, 15,000km. smile.png

I always thought Toyota dealers kept to a standard service schedule. There was no oil change at my 1000 KM service, just a quick inspection. Our dealer always telephones us about services but they also put a reminder sticker in the truck.. Toyota use their own brand oil at service intervals, they always put the empty container plus some left over oil in the plastic containers in the back of the truck.

At a recent 40K KM service they also put a litre bottle of Toyota injector cleaner in the back too, I checked, they did bill me for it.

Sometime back I stuck a steel K&N air filter in so that saves a few pennies.

My D4D 3L been modified a bit changing wheels/tyres/suspension, the Toyota service guys no longer take the wheels off to check brakes, discs etc, I do that myself now plus there 's one of those Mobil 1 service workshop in town who service a lot of Fortuners etc.

Toyota have a standard service schedule but dealers adjust it to suit themselves so you do not always get the same answer from different dealers. Common engine oil change intervals are 5,000km for mineral oil or mineral /synthetic blends and 10,000km for synthetic.

Although the engine is not working hard, cold starts and light loads are just as bad for modern diesels with EGR and turbochargers.

Sounds like they've given you the cheapest mineral oil, in which case a change in 5000KM is probably in the engine's best interest. Switch to the synthetic oil option at the 10K service and then just live by the book from there.

Yoyota service agent's use Toyota oil it's Semi Syn. cost for a 10,000 service is 1,500bt inc: cheap as chip's do it every 5.000km. N/B Toyota recommend 'In the hand book' you change the oil at 5,000km if it has been used at high speed during that time and that's with their S/Syn.

As an ex garage proprietor who never had a customers car that I maintained break down on the road, I'd say every 5,000k is a waste of time, effort & money. But its your money...... smile.png

That's every 3,100 miles. 6,200 miles = 10,000kms is more than adequate.

Used to always change my own motors at 6,000 miles and some did 300,000kms and were still running fine ....... and that was before synthetic oils became popular.

Many modern big truck oil change intervals are 100 -150,000kms.

That's a good point. Even my old knackers generally used to get an oil change only every 5000 miles or so, and that was usually cheap stuff.

Seriously, 150,000km on the same oil?? Surely it's hardly worth changing?

Heavy Truck engines are designed for durability and economy and their usage is totally different to light vehicles so the oil change intervals are not comparable. Standard oil change intervals vary typically from 20 - 50,000km depending on type and use. Some manufacturers allow extended intervals and Mercedes promote up to 150,000km as Lancashirelad mentioned. The extended intervals only apply with the right conditions and Oil Sampling and Analysis.

Considering the life and cost of rebuilding a truck engine, yes it is definitely worth changing the oil.

You service it every 10,000 km. See page 395 in your owners manual.

There are a load of pages, just right a list and I will look it up.

For starters..

Fuel filter....No replacement schedule, the yellow fuel dash light will tell you if it needs changing.

Engine oil/filter, every 10,000kms.

Tappets, says check at 40kkm or 4 years.

Air filter..every 30kkm.

Diff oil...every 40kkm.

Manual trans oil..Just inspect level, change at 4 years.

Drive shaft UJ's...every 5kkm. (Sounds a bit OTT to me)...
